Friday Linkups: River Road

Today I'm linking up with Coffee Addicted Writer for book blogger hop, Rose City Reader for Book Beginnings on Fridays and Freda's Voice for Friday 56.

The Question from the Blogger Hop is:
Do you like to read books with a theme such as Halloween, Christmas, etc.?

My Answer:
I'm neutral on the theme thing.  I wouldn't necessarily grab a book because it has a theme but I wouldn't not get it because it's Christmas themed.  My only concern is that sometimes themed books can travel into cutesy territory.  While I do read a lot of cozies I'm not a huge fan of cutesy.

And now for this week's book!
River Road for Jayne Ann Krentz.  I've been wanting to read this book for ages especially since two of my favorite reviewers (Kimba at Caffeinated Book Reviewer and Lark from Bookwyrm's Hoard) gave it high marks.  When I saw this at the library Monday I couldn't resist picking it up despite the fact that my TBR pile is ignoring the laws of physics to stay up right and I have more review books than I know what to do with.  The trials of being a book lover!!

The Beginning:
" "Who appointed you my guardian angel?" Lucy Sheridan asked.  She was pissed - really, really pissed.  But she was also thrilled."

Friday 56: (from page 56 of my hardback library copy)
"Mason folded a paper napkin with origami-style precision. "I don't think things are turning out the way Jillian hoped they would"
Lucy set the strainer filled with the washed baby bok choy on the counter next to the stove.  "Meaning?"

So what do you think?  Not the most intriguing of 56s I know.  Have you read this one?  Would you read this one?

  1. I identify with your physics-defying book piles, having numerous ones of my own, lol. I've got a copy of River Road from the library and am hoping to get to it before it has to be returned.

  2. I have enjoyed this author and it's time for me to read another...this one sounds like a good place to start. And I am tempted to go to the library again soon...in spite of MY stacks. Thanks for sharing, and here's mine: “EVERYWHERE THAT MARY WENT”

    1. I'm not sure if I've ever read anything by her. If I did it's been years and years. So far this is really good! I'm enjoying it!

  3. Same here, if it's too adorable I just get sick of the book. And I know that technically you're not supposed to judge a book by its cover, but I really do! Not quite sure whether this novel is my kind of book, but I can definitely relate to seeing a book and needing it despite having piles of other books to read! Thanks for sharing :) Hope you have a great weekend!

    1. I don't love adorablenes. I definitely judge a book by it's cover so no worries there! All books can't be for everyone! That's what makes reading fun.

    1. She's a teenager so that explains the mix of intense emotions! So far I'm really enjoying this one. I don't mind if the theme is well done but if it's super cutesy or unnecessary I doubt I'm finishing it!

  9. Themed books are okay in small doses....after awhile they sometimes seem fomulaic.

River Road sounds like a good read!

I've been away from the meme for a while, but trying to get back in the swing of things. Here's my Friday Post.

    1. Definitely! I don't mind if the theme helps promote the plot but that doesn't happen enough.

So far I'm really enjoying River Road. I wish life would stop getting in the way so I could just sit down and finish it!

  11. Why would they need a guardian angel in the first place, I wonder....
Kind of vague 56 but it makes you wonder what she wanted and for what.

    Happy weekend!

  13. Aagh, cutesy books. I hate when cozies go cutesy.

This book is on my wishlist, I do enjoy Krentz. I wish I had a guardian angel. :D And when a book at the library calls your name, you must answer!

  16. Hi Katherine,

I am not fussy about reading books with a theme, if I like the sound of a book, that's good enough for me. Which is why, I too have far more review books than I can ever hope to get through. I hate letting authors down, although I will always promote each book I receive several times, as part of my weekly memes schedule ... it's just the final review which never seems to happen somehow!

I am liking the sound of 'River Road', another new author for my list! I try to find 'Teaser Tuesday' lines which are interesting enough to whet the readers appetite for a book, without giving too much of the storyline away, although as your own lines have to come from page 56, I can see why that might not always be possible, it's just one of those things! Mind you, your lines this week are quite descriptive and immersing!

Thanks for sharing and enjoy the rest of your weekend,

    Yvonne.

  17. I'm the same way when it comes to holiday themed books. I don't seek them out generally (although I have once or twice), but I also don't mind reading them. I admit to reading out of season on occasion.

    River Road sounds really good.
