This Week with Leukemia, a Puppy and Some Reading - February 20

It's Sunday Post time!  This is hosted by the awesome Caffeinated Book Reviewer and gives us all a chance to recap our week.

What I Got:

When She Dreams by Amanda Quick - I really enjoy Quick's historical romantic suspense and this looks like a fun one.  (Publisher)

Under Lock and Skeleton Key by Gigi Pandian - I read a book in another series by another author and this first in a new series about a woman who works for a company that makes secret staircases and hidden reading nooks and happens to stumble over dead bodies.  (Publisher)

Bound by Murder by Laura Gail Black - I have enjoyed the two previous books about an antiquarian bookseller and am looking forward to this one.  (Publisher)

Reading:  Deadly Director's Cut by Vicki Delany and Consigned to Death by Jane K. Cleland

Listening: Treasure Island by Robert Louis Stevenson

Rover had a play date with two puppy friends from puppy class and had the best time running around.  One of the puppies is an Australian Shepherd and she kept trying to herd him which was entertaining.  He was not a big fan of being herded so he kept turning on her and chasing her.  All 3 dogs wore themselves out.  He has 3 more puppy classes and then will start Manners 101 the next week.  There are a lot of people trying to get in and a limited number of spots so I was so glad to get in.  He's doing great with training but we've got a lot of work to do with him!  I'm not sure if he has the temperament for therapy work but I definitely want to do agility and obedience with him and maybe scent work and tracking as well.

Will's numbers crashed this week.  This is good in that it shows that the chemo is working but bad that it leaves him so vulnerable to any kind of infection.  I'm a little worried because the last time his ANC was this low he ended up in the hospital for a few days so we have stayed pretty isolated and he has stayed home.  The good thing is that we think this is a reaction to his vaccine and not an illness or infection that he is fighting off so I'm hoping we can put off hospital time.

I've had two favorite series latest entries fall a bit flat for me and I'm starting to wonder if I'm the problem.   Both were kind of character building vs plot driven and I found myself getting just annoyed with the characters.  I'm trying to do a bit of genre flipping to see if that will help.

Have a great week and happy reading!

  1. I completely understand wondering if it is you or the author when you read several books in a row that were just okay. Hope you get it sorted out soon.

  2. That Delany book looks cute.

Sending lots of good vibes Will's way.

It does help sometimes I think to change things up.

I hope you guys have a fabulous week! Be well!!

  3. All the best with the reading, and with all you've got on read what you need and if it doesn't work like the later reading just let it go for now. Hope Will will be okay as you enter this phase of low immunity. Love Rover's friends date. You are working hard with him, quite a hobby/work for you but rewarding I hope. I thought of you as I listen to the podcast Happier in Hollywood and one of them got of a puppy and then recently... she got another one to keep the first one company!!

  4. I had another favorite author's book fall flat for me over the weekend. I DNF'd and wonder if I've just changed my reading expectations. I'm okay with that. Also, I bought the book so don't feel inclined to even review it.
You've got me curious about Amanda Quick. I enjoy HR Suspense so I'll look up When She Dreams. I pray that Will regains strength and feels better each day.

  5. Rover is such a cutie! It's funny about the herding thing, we have a collie and she does that too. Especially when the kids play with her outside and to the cats when we get out the vacuum. Dunno why but she does and it's funny to watch. Although I don't think the cats find it amusing. Hope you have a great week.

  6. Hope your boy feels better thus week. That looks like an exuberant puppy party!

I've read Krentz books but not her alter ego Amanda Quick. Though the mood I'm in this week, an historical fiction sounds good.

  7. I'm sorry Will's numbers were rough this week, but I hope the doctors are right and it's just a reaction to the vaccine.

I think about Will every day. Sending good thoughts and prayers for him and you.

  8. Rover sure is a cutie. It's nice for him to have other dogs to play with. That Amanda Quick book sure looks good. I haven't read one of her books in a long time. I hope Will hangs in there and I'm wishing him the best.

  9. Cute dog photo! Good luck with the training. I hope Will feels better and is able to avoid the hospital. Have a good week!

  10. I hope Will stays safe from infections during this time.

The puppies are adorable, and I love the look of your cozy mystery. Enjoy your week!

  11. My daughter and her family have a 10 mth old Australian Shepard who is about to begin some dog training classes. He is a herder as well - it's funny how that instinct kicks in. She has destroyed so much stuff already including favorite clothes of the family.

I hope Will has a better week.

  12. I've read a few Amanda Quick books in the past and really liked them. I do always like her covers too. Looks like the play date was a hit! I hope that Will doesn't have the infections happen this time. Let's hope he just stays on the good path healthwise! Have a good week!

  13. Hi there Katherine! Rover is growing up now!

Have you seen the new adaptation for Death on the Nile?? Would love to hear your opinion on it! I've spend my whole weekend with Death on the Nile. Read the book and watched all 3 adaptations. I'll attach my review here below.

Have a wonderful week Katherine and I hope Will is going to have a good week.

  14. I hope Will is doing well. Rover is so cute.

I haven't read an Amanda Quick book in a long time. I usually like her books. I have Deadly Director's Cut to review too. Hope you like it.

I hope you all have a great week!

  15. How fun for Rover! And, I hope Will can avoid hospital time as well.

WHEN SHE DREAMS looks really good. I think the only romantic suspense I've ever read is REBECCA, which doesn't quite fit. I think I'd like romantic suspense, though. I love thrillers and romance so it seems like a happy marriage of the two.

  16. I enjoyed When She Dreams; I hope you will, too. It's hard when books you were expecting to enjoy fall flat. I've had that happen, particularly when I read a book while I was feeling stressed. Sometimes I enjoy the book more if I reread it later.

Under Lock and Skeleton Key sounded so good, I promptly went to NetGalley and checked out a few reviews, then requested it. Fingers crossed!

I'm sorry Will's having a bad week, numbers-wise. You're smart to stay close to home, but I know it must be hard on all of you. Hang in there! He's always in my prayers.

  17. I switch up my genres often and find that helps me. We are staying home and we aren't having chemo or anything, too many viruses and COVID, especially this time of year. You are doing a lot with Rover. I hope it's fun. Lulu loves her walks but she doesn't come very well or heel at all, but of course she is on a leash and only weighs 18 pounds. I hope this is a good week for you.

Anne - Books of My Heart This is my Sunday Post

  18. I hope that Will is able to avoid any infections and the hospital. Rover is adorable. I am thinking that I want to go to a puppy play date. I don't want to bring a dog just watch the puppies play :) I hope that you have a good week!

  19. Nice day for Rover. Thanks for sharing your updates. My first roundup is up!

  20. Life seems like a roller coaster for you lately... I sure hope Will's numbers begin to rebound this week. The photo of the puppies makes me smile!

  21. Hopefully Will's numbers this week are on the rise, but I am glad to hear the chemo is doing its job and he has been able to stay home. :)

Oh that puppy class! I want to go play with all the puppies! What fun!

  22. I hope Will's numbers rally quickly. I'm happy he was able to get the vaccine, though. I have to work on getting my booster. I think about Will every day. ❤

I did obedience with my dogs. It's so much fun. Maybe you'll turn into a dog show family! 🐶

    Have a wonderful week. 🌞

  23. I always wanted a secret nook and staircase (without the dead bodies). Under Lock and Skeleton Key sounds like a book for me. :-)

Sending well wishes for Will and hope his numbers improve soon. Isolating is no fun, I know, but if it keeps him safe, that's the best alternative.

I hope you are able to find something more satisfying to read! Have a great week, Katherine.

  24. UNDER LOCK AND SKELETON KEY sounds like a fun read!

We had an Aussie puppy for a while and he loved to herd. When the kids were swimming in our backyard pool, he would spend the entire time running around the perimeter of the pool, watching carefully to make sure they stayed where they were supposed to be :)

  25. Cruz is an aussie. He's not a strong herder at all, except for ME. He's always super aware of where I am and if I'm not where he expects me to be, like say at bedtime. When we run just the two of us he's all over the trail and in front and behind, but if you add anyone else to the run so he can't always see me he gets obnoxious about "checking in" with me over and over. It's both adorable and maddening.

  26. Good wishes sent to your son and hope next week is better for him. It's an adorable puppy, and you are saying you want to train him for some kind of service, which is a noble idea. Puppies are so much work but worth the effort!
I had to chuckle over your Lock and Key cozy. The specifics of making hidden reading nooks... but I would like one!

  27. Congrats on the new pets. We saw the movie, Dog, last week and really enjoyed the story about a vet and a veteran combat dog.

  28. I hope Will stays in a good place and doesn't have to be hospitalized.

The puppies are adorable and look like fun.

I have to change genres now and then when books in my usual genre annoy me. Good luck on changing it up.

Have a great week, and here are my WEEKLY UPDATES

  29. I didn't know that the author of Under Lock and Skeleton Key had another book, never heard of her so thought it was her fist book. I have it but I worry about new cozies with illustrated covers because they are not my cute fluffy cozies I love, but I do have it to read.

  30. I love that Amanda Quick cover! I'm definitely adding that to my TBR

  31. Oh! I hope that Will is doing okay! Hope you have a great week!

    Here’s my Sunday Post!
