2018 Second Quarter Check In

At the beginning of 2018 I made a list of Bookish Goals.  One of my overall goals for the year is to actually accomplish some things I want to do instead of just talking about how much I want to do them.  I've been fairly successful on the non-bookish front but I felt like a check in was needed over here in book land.

Succeeding:

Read 200 Books - Still a bit behind but am catching up and my reading tends to increase pretty dramatically once school starts back in August.

Keep an eye out for independent bookstores - Found a new one in Birmingham - it ended up being a disappointment but I did go!

Make progress on a series I've neglected - Actually doing okay with this one though there are still some gaps in several of the series I enjoy.

Spend some time using a coloring book while listening to an audio book - I've done this a couple of times and it's so relaxing!

Try out some new cookbooks - I have!  I'm turning more and more to my cookbooks again and really enjoying it.

Complete the Modern Mrs. Darcy 2018  Reading Challenge - I have a few categories filled in and a few options for other categories.

Failing:

Create some kind of system for incoming books - This has actually gotten worse since I made this resolution but I have some hope that it will get better.

Focus on reading my own books - Have only read a few out of my own collection this year.  Need to get better about this!

Read more nonfiction - Somehow I've read no nonfiction this quarter.

Participate in at least one readathon - Big nope here!

2nd Quarter Stats

Books Read So Far This Year: 82

Disappointments: Lost Lake by Sarah Addison Allen - Wasn't bad just didn't love it as much as I expected.

Books I Loved: Caroline: Little House Revisited by Sarah Mills
Heaven Adjacent by Catherine Ryan Hyde

How is your reading going this year?

  1. I think I need a more structured set of goals as you do. There was a notebook with my lists but I tend to leave it in my bag i carry and don` t check up on it as much as I should. I have fallen behind on the Girlxoxo challenge this year .....but i know why!
This year I am slowing down on the number of books I`m reading (opposite of you!) because I am picking the fatter books I have neglected. Loving some of the trilogies and I definitely like a series with lots of books and reoccurring characters. About to finish the Frieda Klein series.

  2. I've got a ton of colouring books which I never get time to use. My reading this year is way below expectations and I'm trying not to stress over it!

  3. Sounds like you are doing pretty good! I need to read more nonfiction too. I am about halfway done with the MMD challenge but I have hard categories left. Hopefully we both get it done.

  4. Goals are goals, some we meet and some we don't but its always fun to make them and aim for them I think. Good to hear you have the Modern Mrs Darcy challenge in hand. This year I have decided I am setting August aside for reading my own books so have been carefully avoiding review books that I'd need to read in that month. Then September I am going to focus on challenge books which could be review books if they fit. We shall see. But I got the August idea from you actually, because you had a birthday month this year. So I loved the idea and I am giving myself the birthday gift of just reading my own books in August, although library books are okay to go there too!

  7. Impressive amount of books read so far! Sadly I didn't attempt goals (other than keeping up with review books). Probably a good thing since my life changed a lot when my dad passed away in Feb. I help care for my mom who lives 3.5 hrs away - so I spend most Mon-Thurs staying with her. I'm enjoying that time with her but my reading has diminished a bit.
I remember liking Lost Lake a bit more than you. And I really enjoyed Heaven Adjacent. I hope you have a fantastic second half of the year.

  8. My reading is coming along okay, but my tbr pile is scary. 😩 I just finished reading a book that I struggled through. It was quite painful.
I’ve been turning to more of my cookbooks lately too. 😊
I’ve been seeing great reviews of Heaven Adjacent.

  9. I really only had one goal for the and that was to get more caught up with my past due review books and improve my NetGalley stats. I have actually done a pretty good job and am slowly getting things to look a lot better. You have done a really great job overall, Katherine.

  10. I'm trying to read 200 this year as well, and it's TOUGH to get that many! My reading has slowed down a lot this summer. Hopefully, like yours, it will pick up when the kids go back to school. I hate it when my family gets in the way of my reading :)

  11. I love this post, Katherine. I am not this organized. LOL I am cutting back on my challenges for this second half of the year. I hope you have a great third quarter and I wish you luck with your reaching your goals!

  12. 200 books?! Wowzer - I'm lucky to ever hit 100. I have hardly read any nonfiction this year, either. Is it because reality is all the nonfiction we can handle these days?
