Friday Linkups: Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy

It's Friday so time to participate in Book Blogger Hop with Coffee Addicted Writer, Book Beginnings on Fridays hosted by Rose City Reader, and the Friday 56 hosted by Freda's Voice.

Question:
What is the scariest book title you have either read or heard about?

Answer:
It isn't necessarily the scariest title but the book that the mere mention of can make me shudder is Stephen King's It.  I think it's a combination of vague title, seriously creepy cover and some scenes from the movie that are permanently etched on my brain!

This week's book is The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy by Douglas Adams.  I read this book when I was 11 or 12 and remember really enjoying it.  I've also seen the fairly recent movie and an older BBC production where I'm pretty sure the prop budget consisted of whatever spare change the production crew could pull out of their pockets.  However, my very first run in with this story comes in computer game form.  Back in the 80s we had the PC game version of this book.  It had no graphics, only words.  To do something you'd type in a command and it would spit text back out at you and you'd go from there.  Anyone else remember those types of games?  They were great fun though my kids look at me like I'm nuts when I talk about them!

The Beginning - from the prologue:
"Far out in the uncharted backwaters of the unfashionable end of the Western Spiral arm of the Galaxy lies a small unregarded yellow sun."

And from Page 56:
" The Universe jumped, froze, quivered and splayed out in several unexpected directions.
Arthur and Ford opened their eyes and looked about in considerable surprise."

So what do you think?  Keep reading?  I for one love Adams sly and almost serious type of humor!

  1. Stephen King would be my scariest, too, but it would be hard to choose one specific title!

  2. It has been a long time since I read this. I have the movie on my DVR but have not watched it yet. I am usually disappointed in movies made from books so I will see how this one goes.

    1. I actually really liked the movie. You could tell the people in charge of the movie production really enjoyed the book because they did a great job keeping the spirit of the book intact.

  3. IT is definitely terrifying! I have been scarred for life when it comes to clowns because of that film and I haven't even tried the book. I haven't read 'Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy' yet but I absolutely love the movie. I guess it's high time! Thanks for sharing :) Hope you have a great weekend!

    1. Right! I've only seen pieces of the movie and I'm traumatized. I do feel like I should read the book but we'll see if that ever happens. I do love Hitchhiker's Guide and it's been far too long since I've read it.

  6. I saw The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy but had no idea it was derived from a book! Oh goodness, I bet the book is just as wild and hilarious as the movie was. Have a lovely weekend Katherine :)

    1. It's been awhile since I've read or seen either version but while I think the book is better the movie has the right spirit so they're both a lot of fun!

  8. Anything Stephen King scares me. I only read one of his books, and that was enough for me. :)

  11. Stephen King is definitely my scariest. I started reading The Shining on a plane to Europe and had to put it down. Second has to be Dean Koontz.

  12. I really like that beginning, I haven't read Hitchhiker's Guide but I love the whole idea of it- the wacky humor and everying. I really need to read that soon... I did see an omnibus edition of all the books at B&N and it looked good. Maybe this fall/ winter I'l read it...

    1. You really need to read this! The humor is definitely on the wacky side but there's a dryness to it that makes it really great. Read it!!

  13. My husband introduced me to The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy years ago and I devoured all the books in the series.

As to scariest book I have read . . . Machete Season, I think. It's nonfiction about the Rwanda genocide. The way neighbors and friends turned on each other and slaughtered people for no other reason than a difference in ethnicity. Horror novels rarely scare me as much as real life stories like that.

    1. I've only read the first one but I want to read the rest.

Machete Season sounds terrifying - especially about the neighbors and friends turning on each other. Real life is definitely scarier than fiction because you can't tell yourself that it would never happen.
