Top Ten Tuesday - Books on My TBR With a Unit of Time in the Title

Today I'm linking up with Top Ten Tuesday hosted by
That Artsy Reader Girl which is all about lists.  Since lists are one of my favorite things this is one of my favorite linkups!  Today's topic is about Books with a Unit of Time in the Title.  Here are 10 Books on my TBR with a unit of time in the title.

1.  One Night Gone by Tara Laskowski

2.  Miss Pettigrew Lives for a Day by Winifred Watson

3.  Dark Night by Paige Shelton

4.  The Summer Wives by Beatriz Williams

5.  One Hundred Years of Exile: A Romanov's Search for Her Father's Russia by Tania Romanov

6.  The Bookshop of Yesterdays by Amy Meyerson

7.  Here Today, Gone Tamale by Rebecca Adler

8.  Mrs. Jeffries and the Nick of Time by Emily Brightwell - One could possible argue that nick of time is not actually a unit of measure but I refuse to consider that argument.

9.  The Summer Before the War by Helen Simonson

10. Next Year in Havana by Chanel Cleeton

Have you read any of these?  Do you have books with units of time in the title on your TBR?

The Proof Is In the Pudding - Cozy Mystery Review

Goodreads: The Proof is in the Poison (Southern Homebrew Mystery #2) by Diane Kelly

Rating: Liked It!
Source:   Publisher

Description:  Now that her moonshine shop is up and running, Hattie Hayes can focus her efforts on expanding her fledgling business to events in the area, like the Chattanooga Choo Choo Model Train Convention, which is running full steam ahead at the convention center down the block. Hattie is all aboard, seizing this perfect opportunity to promote her Southern homebrew to the folks who have come to the city for the annual event.

But when an attendee dies after drinking some of Hattie's moonshine, she'll need to prove her innocence. Between tight-lipped train hobbyists and competitors for a coveted convention prize, Hattie has a wide array of suspects to choose from, and she'll need to use all the tricks up her sleeve to make sure her moonshine business can survive a murderer and stay on track.

Genre: Mystery - Cozy

Why I Picked This Book:  I enjoyed the first book in the series and I love Chattanooga so I couldn't resist picking up this book.

My Impression: Chattanooga is a train lover's dream and throw in a model train convention and it's even better.  Since trains are such a huge part of the culture of the town I really enjoyed how the author pulled that into this book and it made the absolute perfect setup for a murder.

Hattie has big plans on how to promote her moonshine shop with the train convention and at the beginning it looks like everything is going well- that is until a participant falls over dead and Hattie's shine is to blame.  Hattie reluctantly gets pulled into the investigation in order to save her shop.  I'm not a huge train fan but I did find all the model train information really interesting and I enjoyed all the characters that the convention brought in.  The side characters are also a lot of fun - especially Hattie's grandfather.

The mystery was interesting and did keep me guessing as there were more than a few people who weren't going to be shedding tears over the victim's death.  I enjoyed the read and the virtual visit to Chattanooga.

Would I Read More of this Series/Author? Definitely!  I enjoyed this book and other books I've read by the author.

Would I Recommend this Book?  If you enjoy cozies with a bit of quirkiness this is a great series though I do recommend starting with the first book.

* I received this book in exchange for an honest review.  As always my opinions and impressions are completely my own. *

Life with Leukemia, a Puppy, and Some Reading - June 5

It's Sunday Post time!  This is hosted by the awesome Caffeinated Book Reviewer and gives us all a chance to recap our week.

What I Got:

Donut Disturb by Ellie Alexander - This is one of my favorite cozy mystery series so of course I couldn't resist this one!  (Publisher)

Castle Deadly, Castle Deep by Veronica Bond - The first book in this series was one of my favorites of 2021 so I'm so excited to pick up this second book. (Publisher)

Currently:

Reading:  A Man Lay Dead by Ngaio Marsh and Peril at Pennington Manor by Tracy Gardner

Listening:  The Secret Life of Miss Mary Bennett by Katherine Cowley

Not much going on this week.  Will is feeling pretty well and is getting calories in and finally gaining weight.  We are trying to get the school year finished up and he's been feeling well enough to get some lessons in most days which is nice.

Rover's obedience class started up again after a 3 week break and he is doing well.  He does great with most commands but we are still working on the enthusiasm with which he greets people.  He'll be 8 months old in a couple of weeks and while we still have a long way to go I can see some calming down/maturity happening.  I'm looking forward to when we can move on to agility and other more fun classes.

I'm just feeling wiped out.  Not sure if it's allergies or just the last year and a half hitting me but I feel like I could happily sleep for the rest of the year.  I've been getting in some exercise and some naps and both seem to be helping.

Have a great week and happy reading!

Friday Five - June TBR

I'm taking a bit of a break from my usual Friday Linkups to try something a little different.  I'm in a list making kind of mood so I thought I'd start making random five lists.  Sometimes they'll be bookish other weeks not so much.  Since this is the first Friday in June I'm looking at 5 books I'd like to read this month.

1.  Travels with George:  In Search of Washington and His Legacy by Nathaniel Philbrick - This sounds like a history combined with a travel memoir which sounds absolutely perfect for me and completely fascinating.

2.  Silence in the Library by Katharine Schellman - I accidentally picked up an eARC of the 3rd book in this series without realizing it was part of a series.  I loved the first book so I want to get the second book read before the third comes out.

3.  All the Colors of Night by Jayne Ann Krentz - I really liked the first book in this series and I love romantic suspense this time of year.

4.  Bayou Book Thief by Ellen Byron - I loved the last series by this author set in Louisiana and am so looking forward to this one!

5.  A High End Finish by Kate Carlisle - I enjoy Kate Carlisle's mysteries and have enjoyed the most recent books in this series so I'm looking forward to going back to the beginning.

What are you hoping to read this June?

Books from the Backlog - Eight Hundred Grapes

Today I'm linking up with Carole from Carole's Random Life of Books for Books from the Backlog.  I really enjoy the chance to feature a book that's been hiding in the piles of books for far too long!

Goodreads:  Eight Hundred Grapes by Laura Dave

Blurb:  There are secrets you share, and secrets you hide…
Growing up on her family’s Sonoma vineyard, Georgia Ford learned some important secrets. The secret number of grapes it takes to make a bottle of wine: eight hundred. The secret ingredient in her mother’s lasagna: chocolate. The secret behind ending a fight: hold hands.

But just a week before her wedding, thirty-year-old Georgia discovers her beloved fiancé has been keeping a secret so explosive, it will change their lives forever.

Georgia does what she’s always done: she returns to the family vineyard, expecting the comfort of her long-married parents, and her brothers, and everything familiar. But it turns out her fiancé is not the only one who’s been keeping secrets…

Why It Needs To Come Off the Shelf:  I don't even remember when I bought this on Audible but I do remember being so excited to pick this book up.  That was years ago so I should probably listen to it soon.

The Year of the Project - Island of the Mad + The Lost Jewels

I do love a good list.  It gives a nice sense of order and focus and I love making lists about the books I want to read.  Last year I focused just on series I was behind on.  The project went great and I caught up on a ton of series but I felt like I was neglecting other books on my shelf and books at my library.  This year I have a few lists going - Series, Library, Clear Off My Shelves, and a random TBR Bingo where I pull books off my Goodreads TBR.  Here are a few of my most recent reads.

Project:  Catching Up on Series

Blurb:  A June summer's evening, on the Sussex Downs, in 1925. Mary Russell and Sherlock Holmes are strolling across their orchard when the telephone rings: an old friend's beloved aunt has failed to return following a supervised outing from Bedlam. After the previous few weeks--with a bloody murder, a terrible loss, and startling revelations about Holmes--Russell is feeling a bit unbalanced herself. The last thing she wants is to deal with the mad, and yet, she can't say no.
The Lady Vivian Beaconsfield has spent most of her adult life in one asylum after another, yet he seemed to be improving--or at least, finding a point of balance in her madness. So why did she disappear? Did she take the family's jewels with her, or did someone else? The Bedlam nurse, perhaps?

The trail leads Russell and Holmes through Bedlam's stony halls to the warm Venice lagoon, where ethereal beauty is jarred by Mussolini's Blackshirts, where the gilded Lido set may be tempting a madwoman, and where Cole Porter sits at a piano, playing with ideas...

My Thoughts:  I really enjoy this series.  Russell and Holmes are interesting leads both bringing a wide range of knowledge and life experience as well as a willingness to follow any mystery and hunt down the truth.  The part of the book that took place in Venice was both interesting and beautifully described.  The pace was well done and seeing Russell in a party girl role was pretty entertaining.  There was a somewhat jumbled feel as Russell and Holmes are running this way and that and I'm not sure every stop was necessary.  All and all this was an interesting and entertaining read with a fantastic ending.  My Rating:  Really Liked It!

Projects: Library List

Blurb:  Present Day. When respected American jewelry historian, Kate Kirby, receives a call about the Cheapside jewels, she knows she’s on the brink of the experience of a lifetime.
But the trip to London forces Kate to explore secrets that have long been buried by her own family. Back in Boston, Kate has uncovered a series of sketches in her great-grandmother’s papers linking her suffragette great-grandmother Essie to the Cheapside collection. Could these sketches hold the key to Essie’s secret life in Edwardian London?

In the summer of 1912, impoverished Irish immigrant Essie Murphy happens to be visiting her brother when a workman’s pickaxe strikes through the floor of an old tenement house in Cheapside, near St. Paul’s Cathedral in London. The workmen uncover a stash of treasure—from Ottoman pendants to Elizabethan and Jacobean gems—and then the finds disappear again! Could these jewels—one in particular—change the fortunes of Essie and her sisters?

Together with photographer Marcus Holt, Kate Kirby chases the history of the Cheapside gems and jewels, especially the story of a small diamond champlevé enamel ring. Soon, everything Kate believes about her family, gemology, and herself will be threatened.

My Thoughts:  I enjoyed this but didn't love it.  Kate and Essie are both interesting characters with determination and tragic backstories.  The actual plot of the book was fascinating but it didn't go into the depth that I really wanted from this story.  I was fascinated by the jewels and while I appreciated what we did get on the history of it I was left wanting more.  While Kate did have questions about Essie's past it didn't feel like she did much unraveling and what she did was done kind of last minute.  My Rating:  Liked It
