This Week in Reading - October 27

It's Sunday Post time!  This is hosted by the awesome Caffeinated Book Reviewer and gives us all a chance to recap our week.

What I Got:

City of Scoundrels by Victoria Thompson - I've really loved the first two books in this series so I'm super excited about this 3rd book!  (Publisher)

The Chocolate Shark Shenanigans by JoAnna Carl - I know nothing about this book or this author but this one sounds fun so I'm looking forward to reading it.

Currently:

Reading:  Hickory Dickory Death by Agatha Christie and Apple Cider Slaying by Julie Anne Lindsey

Listening:  I See You by Claire Mackintosh
Watching:  I've been enjoying The Voice so far and while I've recorded a bunch of my usual shows that have restarted I haven't actually started watching any of them!

Off the Blog:

Another not so exciting week.  It rained a ton which it hasn't done in ages so that was kind of nice.  The bad thing is that the Tornado's field trip to the local pumpkin farm got canceled.  I'm hoping they'll reschedule but we will see.  We attended a Halloween event at a local museum so he got to trick or treat and got bunches of candy so that made up for a bit.   I'm hoping that Halloween will be nice and dry.  Trick or treating in the rain is no fun.  If it does rain we will probably head to the Space and Rocket Center.  They do a big Halloween party which is lots of fun but we prefer just some old fashioned trick or treating!

It looks like J might be sent to New Orleans for work in the next few weeks and since we no longer have a school schedule to worry about I'm thinking about going with him.  I haven't been to New Orleans in years (like pre-Katrina) so all my favorite places are probably long gone.  Also, I'll have a 9 year old with me so I need to stay kid friendly!  Anyone been to New Orleans recently?  Recommendations for places to go/places to eat?  Any places to avoid?

  2. NOLA is on my bucket list. I can't believe I've never been! Just like with Disney World my work schedules never meshed with everyone else's vacations, and those are two places I don't think would be much fun as solo trips. 🏰

    Have a wonderful week! 🌞

  3. Never been to New Orleans, except via books! Sounds like a great idea for you to get away and explore even if it has to be kid friendly would still be fun I'd think. Claire Macintosh writes a good story, hope the audio is good.

  4. I've planned to go to NO several times for book conferences, but none of them worked out. It's such a beautiful old city. I bet there are lots of great things to visit with a child.

Oh! City of Scoundrels! That sounds like great fun.

    Have a lovely week.

  5. I wasn't a fan of the first book in that Victoria Thompson series though I like the author, so I didn't continue but I am glad you enjoyed it! I have Apple Cider Slaying and I need to get to it as it's the prefect time of year for it!

Good thing about homeschooling you can take the learning on the road!

Have a great week and happy reading!

  6. I really like the cover of Apple Cider Slaying. I'll have to take a look at that book. I've never been to New Orleans. It's on my list of places I want to visit someday. I'll look forward to hearing about your trip if you go, Katherine.

Hope you have a great week. I especially hope you get nice weather for Halloween. Definitely makes it more fun.

  7. That trip to New Orleans sounds like a great way for you to unwind. Te last time I visited New Orleans was years and years ago, and my goodness I could tell you some crazy stories that would NOT be kid friendly(lol) I can say that I ate a Mexican restaurant, and while I love spicy food, this was the first time I tasted heat like that, and I practically ran outta there red face, ears and all. My friends could not stop laughing.(lol) Hugs, RO

  9. Sounds like a good excuse for a road trip-think how educational Tornado will find it!

  10. We had to worry about SNOW for Halloween in MN! There are so many fun activities but we are party poopers this year. I do understand we will get about 200 trick or treaters in this new neighborhood so that should keep us hopping.

I have been to New Orleans twice in 2014 and 2016. The first was a family vacation. The second was a book conference so not much time to sightsee. I may have different tastes than you but we enjoyed the Preservation Hall Jazz concert, the New Orleans Cooking School, the Zoo, the Mardi Gras Museum, the World War II museum, a bus tour of the area, the Aquarium, a steamboat ride to battlegrounds. We got a City Pass so things were mostly included. I liked the bus our as the first thing we did which worked well because a) it was raining that day b) it helped us get an overview of what we might want to see and do. We also went to the French markets which is like a big flea market, touristy kind of place. We ate lots of seafood. Monday is a day when many things are closed, except the Cooking School. You really get a whole meal there. I loved that and made sure to go again in 2016. Cafe Adelaide in the Lowe's Hotel has $0.25 martinis at lunch. We enjoyed GW Fins, and Cafe Amelie; we also did a jazz brunch, and I went to Voodoo Harley Davidson and walked around Bourbon Street. That's what I can remember off the top of my head. Oh I was there in 1992 for computer training but didn't get to do much except one amazing dinner.

  11. Have fun in NOLA. My husband and I were there almost 11 years ago to adopt our baby girl :) Needless to say, we didn't get much sightseeing done with a newborn!

  12. And that's one of the advantages of home-schooling - it makes for family-friendly decisions in situations like this. So glad you are having another quiet week and I hope that the weather behaves for Halloween:))

  13. A trip to NO sounds so exciting! I've never been, but my cousin's daughter went to Tulane and totally fell in love with the city. Hope you get a dry Halloween... though I'm sure everyone will have fun even if the weather isn't perfect.

  16. I hope the rain stops so that you and your son can get some trick or treating in. It rained all day Saturday and I was not a fan but it worked out that I could stay in and read. My daughter and husband went to New Orleans last year with a school trip. I am not sure what they did but I guess kid friendly can be done. I hope you enjoy your new reads and have a great week!

  19. I'd love to visit New Orleans one day, it's one of my must visit/bucket list locations.

I too am hoping it stays dry for trick or treating! All we've had for about a month is rain but the past few days have been okay so fingers crossed it lasts a little longer!
I hope you have a lovely time regardless!

  20. The rain has been such a bummer for me - our daily walks are like my main escape so when it rains I get a bit stir crazy. Really stinks that his field trip got canceled. As a teacher, I know that so much work goes into getting those planned - MONTHS of work and forms - for it to be canceled is really rough. I hope they get to reschedule, though that's not easy either.

New Orleans sounds fun, I've never been but would love to go. Have a great week :)
