Friday Fives - Reese Witherspoon's Book Club Choices That I Want to Read

I'm taking a bit of a break from my usual Friday Linkups to try something a little different.  Michelle over at Because Reading is Better Than Real Life   used to do a Five on Fridays that I always enjoyed and I've seen a few other variations on the theme.  As well I'm in a list making kind of mood so I thought I'd give start making random five lists.  Sometimes they'll be bookish other weeks not so much.   The start of the second season of Big Little Lies got me thinking about Reese Witherspoon and her book club choices.  I love Reese Witherspoon and I love how she's gotten involved in the book world but I've never really followed her choices.  So I thought it might be fun to look over her lists and pick 5 I want to read.

1.  The Library Book by Susan Orlean - I feel like I've seen some underwhelmed reviews for this one but Reese describes it as a love letter to libraries so I can't pass that up!

2.  Next Year in Havana by Chanel Cleeton - So this one was on my TBR before I knew it was a Reese pick but I love the sound of the blurb and the cover is gorgeous.

3.  Something in the Water by Catherine Steadman - Reese describes this one as a thriller that pulled her in from page 1 and I could use some escapist reading at the moment.

4.  The Alice Network by Kate Quinn - Another one that was already on my TBR but it sounds so good and I love historical fiction.

5.  The Night Tiger by Yangze Choo - This is a bit different for me but I love the idea of a mysterious tiger that is haunting villages.  Plus, as usual the cover is stunning.

Do you follow Reese Witherspoon's Book Club picks?  What do you think of them?

  1. I didn't even know Reese had a Book Club Pick, and that's very cool. The Next year in Havana looks pretty good. Happy Friyay! RO

  2. I don't follow her list really, but I do know that when she picks a book - it's tough to get it at the library or schedule it for a book group selection. That happened with The Alice Network. Our mystery group read that one earlier this year and it was a little tough for group members to acquire. Too many holds. Wasn't a 'Reese' selection when I picked it, but there you go. The Library Book is the Mayor's Book selection for the Austin Public Library this year - the afternoon book group I attend always reads whatever book is picked and that's the September book. I'm looking forward to reading it.

  3. What a coincidence... I have a post like this in my draft folder! I've ignored Reese's book club picks until recently when my own book club selected Where the Crawdads Sing. I was going to skip it because of all the hype (how could it be THAT good?) but ended up loving it. That sent me looking back over Reese's other picks. I'd only read a few, but was shocked to discover that I'd rated them all 5 stars! Made me wonder if I should go back and read all the others...

  4. Something in the Water was fun! Made me a nervous wreck, but that's a good sign for a thriller. :)

  8. I haven't paid much attention to Reese Witherspoon's picks. I thought I would really love THE LIBRARY BOOK, but I'm one of the readers who found it underwhelming. It's a love letter to the library, but mostly to a specific library to which I have no connection. The book got dull for me, although there were definitely things about it I found interesting. I liked SOMETHING IN THE WATER. It's a tense page turner that kept me riveted. THE ALICE NETWORK did not, however, and I quit reading it after the first few chapters. I may go back to it sometime. Or not.

I'll be interested to see what you think of these!

  9. I have noticed she has a book club although I don't follow. I read the next one after When We Left Cuba of Chanel Cleeton and while you can read one without the other and I liked it. I think another blogger told me they didn't finish it but I really liked the historical view of those times.

  10. The Alice Network was great. I might give the one about Cuba a try, though it sounds a bit iffy.

  12. I saw that a lot of people didn't love The Library Book. Maybe it just wasn't tbeir type of book? I mean as opposed to a poorly written book. I hope you like it because I might be interested. 👍✨
