I'm taking a bit of a break from my usual Friday Linkups to try something a little different. Michelle over at Because Reading is Better Than Real Life used to do a Five on Fridays that I always enjoyed and I've seen a few other variations on the theme. As well I'm in a list making kind of mood so I thought I'd give start making random five lists. Sometimes they'll be bookish other weeks not so much. This is a bookish week! Every season change (well temperature change) seems to bring at least the threat of a reading slump and this change from cold to warm is no different. I haven't hit full slump yet but I find myself really annoyed with most of the characters in the books I'm reading. Does that ever happen to you? Here are a few I'm going to pick up to hopefully keep the slumps away!
1.Taken at the Flood by Agatha Christie - Agatha Christie's characters never annoy me and her clean straightforward writing style is always soothing when I find my tolerance for bad decisions by fictional characters especially low.
2. Meet Me in Atlantis by Mark Adams - This is a bit of a gamble as I haven't actually read anything by Adams but a travel memoir usually keeps me entertained - especially if there's a bit of research or treasure hunting going on.
3. After Many Days by L.M. Montgomery - This is a short story collection that borders on the over sweet but it's just the perfect thing for my somewhat grumpy mood.
4. Out of the Past by Patricia Wentworth - I love a Patricia Wentworth mystery (except for The Grey Mask which is another story for another time) and this is one I haven't read yet. They've got some of the cleanness that Agatha Christie has but are a little cozier and sweeter. Plus, I adore Miss Silver - maybe even more than Miss Marple!
5. Blood Magick by Nora Roberts - Nora Roberts' characters rarely bring me to rage induced screeching (normally it's something along the lines of "just tell them the truth!" at characters who insist on hiding or lying about something unimportant) and this is the third in a trilogy I've really been enjoying.
What are some of your Anti-Slump Reads?
Maybe you can revive this old meme. I think there are reasons people love memes. Lists are such fun to make. There is something nice in its structure, I think.
ReplyDeleteGood luck with your slump-breaking!
I love this! I tend to usually hit a reading slump around October/November. Graphic novels seem to help, and reading lighthearted YA and romcom type stuff also helps.
ReplyDeleteI've actually never read any Agatha Christie, but I have plans to remedy that this summer! :)
Hope that you get over the slump. The Nora Roberts book looks good, I am a huge Nora Roberts fan. Have a great weekend!
ReplyDeleteI go through slumps and periods where I’m irritated at everybody fictional. I think Agatha Christie books would be excellent for a slump.
ReplyDeleteAj @ Read All The Things!
Lists are fun... both to make and to read! Light nonfiction has been my slump-buster of choice for the past few years.
ReplyDeleteMeet Me in Atlantis has a cool cover.
ReplyDeleteI discovered why I have been occasionally having trouble commenting. I needed to use Chrome as my browser. When I use my iPad or phone it defaults to Safari. Now you'll hear from me more :-)
Interesting group of books and I do hope they keep the slumps away! I usually go for a tried and true author whose books I really love when I am in a slump. These look good and varied.
ReplyDeleteI loved anything about Atlantis as a kid, so that one definitely caught my eye! And I LOVE that Christie cover!
ReplyDeleteI haven't read any of these, but I hope they get you out of your slump!
ReplyDeleteAh... those failsafe comfort reads from authors that you know won't let you down! Thank you for sharing, Katherine:)).
ReplyDeleteI've read the first two books in the Cousins O'Dwyer Trilogy. I also want to read more from L. M. Montgomery.
ReplyDeleteEnjoy your books, and thanks for visiting my blog.
I get into reading slumps sometimes. I just keep reading other genres to try and shake myself out of it.
ReplyDeleteI've just come out of a slump so you have my sympathy! I'm taking advantage of being in an apocalypse mood and ploughing through as many as I can while I want to read them! I usually turn to Harry Potter in a slump but this has been a too tired to do anything kind of slump!
ReplyDeleteI love any post with lists! When I hit a book slump, I tend to read a childhood favourite, or else try a book in a genre I haven't read for a while. And I need to read a Nora Roberts soon!
ReplyDeleteI tend to re-read an old favorite when I am in a slump. If I know I love it, then it is usually a safe bet. A favorite author is another good choice.
ReplyDeleteReading old favorites doesn't usually work for me, but I have found anthologies to be just the right cure. 👍✨
ReplyDeleteI remember I read the first of that NR series in one sitting, staying up late into the wee hours. I liked the second one too but by the third, it was too redundant and I felt it just regurgatated what was leaked through the first, two books. I am curious about her latest Guardians trilogy though; the covers are eye-catching.
