This Week in Reading - November 5

It's Sunday Post time!  This is hosted by the awesome Caffeinated Book Reviewer and gives us all a chance to recap our week!

What I Got:

An empty shelf this week!  There have been a lot of new books here in the Library the past few weeks so this empty shelf is very much needed.

Currently:

Reading: Seeds of Revenge by Wendy Tyson and Once Upon a Maiden Lane by Elizabeth Hoyt

Listening:  I Am Half-Sick of Shadows by Alan Bradley though I'm almost done with the 4th Flavia de Luce.  It's been awhile since I listened to this series but I forgot how much I enjoyed it.

Watching:  I'm enjoying The Voice still and my usual shows - NCIS, NCIS: New Orleans, Modern Family, Big Bang Theory, and Criminal Minds.  This weekend for movie night was Zootopia.  Any new shows I should be watching?

Off the Blog:

This week was Halloween and the Tornado had such a good time.  He was a Death Trooper (from Star Wars - Rogue One) and we ended up doing 2 days of trick or treating.  One was a trunk or treat at his school and the 2nd was a regular trick or treating in the neighborhood.  We have a ridiculous amount of candy and I've been quietly removing my favorites from the pile!  Luckily my favorites and his favorites aren't the same so he hasn't noticed.

Also, this week was book fair at the Tornado's school.  He got a huge stack of books and I volunteered a few days as well.  It was crazy busy!  I love to see all the books the kids end up buying.  I'm glad it was really busy though because that meant I spent most of my time at the cash register and not very much time wandering the shelves.  That can be dangerous!

Now that Halloween is over I'm making myself think about Christmas - or specifically Christmas gifts. I'm not very good at pre-planning but I'm hoping to not be quite as much in a panic on December 23 as I usually am.   Are you a pre-planner or a last minuter when it comes to Christmas shopping?

On the Blog:

  1. Ha ha - for some reason I immediately thought you got a new bookcase! :)

I've also been watching The Voice! I've really been enjoying the dynamic this season.

I hope you have a great week this week and enjoy your new reads!

    1. I wish I had gotten a new bookcase! Or ten! I need them desperately! I'm loving the Voice too. This is my first year watching it so I don't have anything to compare it too but it's such fun.

  2. The book fair sounds like it went really well, and yay you for not buying all the books! I'm a pre-planner for Christmas, otherwise I get all flustered and panic buy ridiculous pressies.

    1. It was really fun though not buying all the books was so hard! I need to do better on the planning. I'm always a last minute mess.

  3. It sounds like a really busy week, Katherine. I used to love the book fairs. So fun to pick out new books with my kids. Oh, yes, the Halloween candy! I used to "help" my kids with all their candy. When they were little they didn't notice, but they wised up as they got older! :)

Hope you have a great week!

    1. They do get smarter about the candy stealing. I mostly go with the stuff he doesn't like but even with that I have to be sneaky!

  4. I swear kids get more candy every year. We have enough to last till Christmas (when the next batch of chocolates come in)! I've been sneaking a few of my daughter's too, and throwing out ones no one likes!

    1. Right! I need to do a go through on the candy no one likes. There's quite a bit in the bowl.

  5. Book Fairs are SO DANGEROUS! I have never walked out without buying something for myself and the kids. :)
We have lots and lots of halloween candy but my husband is slowly taking care of it. lol

I am a preplanner! I am so excited about Christmas, I could EXPLODE!!! I already got my son his first first so I am waiting for it to come. They are older and more aware this year so I know a lot of the boxes they are going to see but I don't care if they believe or not, I still will do Christmas like I do every year! :) Are you watching Christmas Movies? My TV hasn't changed since November 1st! I can go on and on about Christmas, today is 50 days!

Have a great week, Katherine! Happy Reading! ox

    1. It was so hard to not buy all the books but I resisted!

I'm just starting to preplan though I'm not sure how great I'll do at it. I'm loving the Christmas movies! I'm slipping them in between my murder shows. It's a nice break!

  6. Thank you so much for helping at your son’s book fair. As a librarian at school, I know how much we appreciate help from parents. And you got the bonus of getting to see firsthand all the great books!

    1. It's rare for me too. I thought I might have it again for this week but then things happened! I'm hoping to avoid or at least limit the panic for the last minute Christmas shopping but I'm sure they're still be something!

  8. Oh I loved Zootopia! We had two trick or treatings too - with one at the school and then the neighborhood. I can't wait for the book fair at my kids school. I am pretty much done with Christmas shopping for the kids. Just need to get for the family! Hope you have a great week!

  11. Sometimes an empty shelf seems like a vacation week lol! Glad you guys had a good Halloween... we only got 2 groups of trick or treaters this year. Every year I say I want to have all my Christmas shopping done by Thanksgiving, but it never happens. Maybe this is the year ;-)

    1. I say that pretty much every year too but so far it's yet to happen. We don't get many trick or treaters at the house though make up for it by going trick or treating so that's something.

  12. I'm glad the Tornado enjoyed Halloween. It's so much fun at that age! And the book fair... oh, I remember those, both as a child and as a parent. So many books, it was hard to choose.

Empty shelves can be a blessing. At least I only had one ARC this week. Books I buy can always wait, but I've got a backlog of ARCs a mile long.

I've barely started to think about Christmas, and I have stuff to make as well as stuff to buy. Well, one knitting project is finished, one is close, one is more than half-way... but one is barely started and I haven't even started the sewing projects yet. Eep. I'll probably end up doing most of my shopping online and shipping it out to wherever. We're spending Christmas with one set of my parents so all our gifts have to go out there, too. But it will all get done! Bless Amazon Prime for free, fast shipping; they've saved my bacon on more than one Christmas recently.

    1. Right! How did we do Christmas pre-Amazon Prime days? I can't even imagine. I'm with you on the ARC backlog. I'm making teeny tiny progress which I guess is better than nothing but it gets overwhelming sometimes. Good luck with your Christmas projects!

  14. It sounds like you have had a lovely, busy week with Halloween and a book fair. I used to love the ones at school both when I taught and parented:)Every year I promise to be better organised for Christmas - and this year I'm determined to follow it through! Have a great week Katherine and enjoy those sneaked sweets - the best kind...

    1. I love book fairs. I think it's even more fun as a parent because my budget isn't quite as limited. I've got a plan in place for Christmas. Sticking to it is the challenge!

  15. OMGosh, I LOVE book fair. Our neighborhood school doesn't do it though but Jellybean gets plenty of book orders from class so she ordered three recently. One is a Dork Diaries book, the newest in its series. The second is a guide to Robloxing, an online game she plays. The third is a like fun, step tracker for kids. Steps are converted into points that she can use to take care of her pet, LOL.

    1. The step tracker sounds fun! I think the Tornado might like that if it isn't too complicated. I'll have to add it to the Christmas gift idea list!

  17. It sounds like a fun Halloween week for you. The Tornado looked really cute in his costume (I saw your pic on Instagram). I miss book fairs. Now that my youngest is in high school they don't have them anymore. I'm starting to think about Christmas gifts but I haven't bought anything yet. I hope you have a great week!

  19. I'm glad your book fair went well! Our new elementary (built last year) was all the buzz on the news here this week. The principal made a bet with his students and teachers. If they sold at or above a certain number for their book fair, he would sleep on the roof of the school. They sold over $10,000 and he did his camp out on the roof this past week. I love book fairs, but I will say the last couple years our offerings have been paltry compared to what they were like when I was growing up, and we have even been reduced to five cases instead of the 8-10 we used to have when I first started working at my school. My purchasing has also had a direct correlation in the decrease of offerings, too.

I'm horrible at planning for Christmas, in terms of purchasing gifts and wrapping. I SUCK at wrapping. I've tried. I get so frustrated. My mom is so perfect at it. Like, how? I have exactly ZERO ideas of what to get for The Man this year. Last year I ordered everything online and it was addressed to me, so he never opened the things.

    1. That's so fun about the principal! The bookfair here was probably 10 cases + about 6 big tables worth of stuff. All the choices makes it easier to spend far too much!

Men are difficult to shop for. J and I started just buying our own Christmas presents for the past couple of years. It's more fun than it sounds!

  20. Yay for no new books! I am always proud of myself when I don't add too many in a week. I bet your son had a great time trick or treating. I do miss having a little one sometimes. I am so last minute with just about everything including Christmas. Have a great week!

    1. It is always nice to have not many books added to the pile. I'm already trying to figure out what we'll do when we have no more littles. We don't get any trick or treaters here so I need to think of something else to stay festive.

  22. Zootopia was fun. Have you guys watched Stranger Things? I just started Stranger Things 2 and so far it's fab.

Lol about the candy- I always hold back any Krackles I find, I can eat those all day.

I'm a preplanner every year who morphs into a desperate last-minuter

    1. No Krackles this year! It makes me sad as I'm a fan of those too.

Stranger Things is next up on our To Watch List. I'm not sure it'll happen this week but definitely next week! I'm the same on Christmas prep. My intentions are always good, follow through - not so much.

  23. I love Book Fairs. We have one coming up the end of this month. Got my bags ready. LOL Time has gotten away from me this year. I usually have a lot of the holiday shopping done by now and I've not done any. Guess I'll be in the nad rush crowd this year.
