This Week in Reading - August 12

It's Sunday Post time!  This is hosted by the awesome Caffeinated Book Reviewer and gives us all a chance to recap our week.

What I Got:

A Vintage Death by Mary Ellen Hughes - This is the 2nd in the Keepsake Cove series that revolves around a woman who inherited a music box store.  I loved the 1st book and was so excited when I was approved for this one a few months ago BUT when I went to download it the Archive Date was put in wrong and it was already archived.  Luckily it was fixed just a couple days ago and I was able to get my copy.  (NetGalley)

The Christmas Sisters by Sarah Morgan - Sarah Morgan can be a bit hit or miss for me but this one involves sisters and spending Christmas in the Scottish Highlands.  Plus, the last book I read by her was a hit so I'm looking forward to this.  (Blog Tour)

Past Due for Murder by Victoria Gilbert - This Blue Ridge Library series is one of my favorites so I couldn't pass on this one - plus it doesn't come out until 2019 so it doesn't count.  (NetGalley)

Mrs. Jeffries and the Three Wise Women by Emily Brightwell - This is an insanely long running series that I've seen around for ages but somehow never read so I couldn't resist this one.  (Publisher)

Currently:

Reading:  After Many Years by L.M. Montgomery and Lighthouse Beach by Shelley Noble

Listening:  I just finished up Because of Miss Bridgerton by Julia Quinn and am next up on the hold list for my next one.

WatchingWorld of Dance on NBC.  I like the judges and everyone is really good and they're all just nice to each other.  Not Great British Bake-Off nice but still nice.

Off the Blog:

This has been a rough week.  Last weekend when we dropped off our 13 year old dog Spots at the vet to be boarded while we were on vacation.  She seemed fine.  We had noticed she seemed a little slower but we kind of chalked it up to age.  She had gone a day or so without eating but that was because J had bought the wrong food and she was always the pickiest of eaters and she was eating treats so we figured everything was okay.  Except it wasn't.  It turned out she was in kidney failure.  She spent a few extra days at the vet getting fluids and everyone thought she was doing better - not healed but maybe at a sustainable level.  Except she wasn't.  And we had to say goodbye to her last weekend.

We got her from a local shelter when she was a little puppy and no one could ever agree what all breeds she was.  She loved the vet and treats and walks and when the UPS guy dropped off a package she barked like she wasn't the toughest dog on the planet.  And even though she was 13 she always bounced and was always happy to be where we were.   We really thought we had longer so it's been a bit of a shock though I don't know it'd be any easier if we had time.  It's been a sad time around here and it's just strangely quiet - especially when the doorbell rings.

  1. Oh no so sorry to hear about Spots. She looks like such a sweet dog... all my condolences. It's never easy to lose a beloved pet friend.

A Vintage death looks nice, and I've seen those Mrs Jeffries books around at the bookstore but haven't read them.

  2. Oh dear, such a sad time and such an important part of your family. Spots will be very missed, feeling for you all.
Looks like a great book haul, and great that the book got taken out of the archived section.

  4. What a beautiful dog Spots was, and I know she was an important member of your family. It never gets easier, whether they go suddenly and take us by surprise, or they suffer for a long time first. My aging population of pets have been heading to "The Rainbow Bridge" over the past year or so. By the way, Spots looks like she had German Short-haired Pointer in her background.

Have a good time reading those fun cozies you have. You always have a good selection of them on your TBR pile.

  5. Oh, so sorry about Spots! It is very hard to say goodbye to a pet you've had for years.

Enjoy your new books...I could use some more cozies.

Thanks for sharing, and here are MY WEEKLY UPDATES

  6. Oh that is just horrible news about Spot! I hate when someone's beloved Pet dies. I lost one of mine this year and I have to prepare myself for the others as three of mine are 13 years old...ugh.

You got some great books! I just listened to the first Blue Ridge book and loved it and need to get to the next one. :) Don't you hate it when you get one from 2019 it's like they are teasing you by putting them up so early!

  7. I am so sorry for your loss, Katherine. I am thinking of you and your family. How is Tornado managing with it all? Our house always seems to empty when we say goodbye to a beloved pet, doesn't it?

I love Gilbert's series. I really need to get to the next one! I hope you have a better week this week.

  10. I'm so sorry for your loss of Spots. Such a sweetie and when they are gone it leaves such a gaping hole. I still think I hear my dog Lassie's toenails clicking on the tiles and she's been gone for some time.

  11. So sorry about your little dog. I know losing them can be so hard. Big hugs to all of you! I'm planning on trying that Keepsake Cove series. I think I must have missed it here, but I know my library likely has the first book. Midnight Ink, the publisher, has some really great series! Love them!

  12. I'm sorry about your dog. It royally sucks when we lose a furry one. They most definitely leave their mark on us, don't they?

  13. Sorry about your dog. *Hugs.* I lost mine to cancer in May, and I still miss her. It’s eerily quiet around here, and I have way too much space in the bed. I never realized how much bed she hogged.

  15. Katherine I'm so very sorry for your loss. The sadness and emptiness is quite overwhelming as you don't expect to be as upset.

I lost my 14 yr old Maltese, she had lumps, she'd been operated on a year before and we thought she wouldn't make it through that one as the lump was big, but she made it through that only to pass a year later as we needed to redo same operation to get the rest of the lump out. She woke up from the operation only to go into a coma a few hours later...to this day, 5 months later I still sorely miss her 😪

Thinking of you in this difficult time.

  16. So sorry to hear about Spots. Looks like she had some Jack Russell Terrier in her. Her face looks just like our dog, Bailey, who was with us for 15 years. It's hard to say goodbye to such an important part of the family. Hugs.
I have the Morgan book - the Scottish setting at Christmas appealed to me so I grabbed it from NG. Hope we both love it.

  17. That is such a hard thing to decide about your pet. Our sweet fur babies are family and I have been there, like you, with that awful renal failure. Hugs for you, my friend

On another note, I saw your comment about Women of the Dunes and yes, You definitely need this book, Katherine. You'll love it. Old house, setting in Scotland and good mystery in a dual time line.

  21. I'm so sorry about Spots... you sure provided a wonderful life for that lucky pup. We lost Zelda earlier this summer to kidney failure, too.

  22. Oh, Katherine, I'm so sorry for your family. It is sometimes excruciating to lose a pet. I am terrified of the day I will lose Baby. *hugs*

  23. Oh, Katherine, I'm so sorry you lost your darling Spots. It's hard to lose a pet at any time, but to lose one without much time to prepare is even harder. I know over time the memories will bring more fond smiles than tears, but that doesn't help now when you are all grieving. Hugs for you and much sympathy for your whole family.

  25. So sorry about your dog. It's so hard to lose them when you aren't expecting it. Our cat died May and I still miss him so much - there's no one to mooch my food any more which is a silly thing to miss but I do!
