This Week in Reading - July 2

It's Sunday Post time!  This is hosted by the awesome Caffeinated Book Reviewer and gives us all a chance to recap our week.

What I Got:

Wicked Deeds by Heather Graham - I don't think it's too big of a shock that I can't resist a Heather Graham book!  Especially not one that's part of the Krewe of Hunters series.  I'm especially excited about this one because it features the couple of the previous 2 books and I really like them.  (NetGalley)

Dead of Winter by Wendy Corsi Staub - Staub is an author I really want to read more of but just haven't managed it yet.  I loved the previous book about Lily Dale and am really excited about this one.  (NetGalley)

Death Overdue by Brook Allison - There's a haunted library and a man who dies right before he gives his theory about who killed someone else.  How was I supposed to resist that?  (NetGalley)

Nine Lessons by Nicola Upson - This is one in a series of books where actual mystery author Josephine Tey becomes a fictional amateur sleuth.  While I'm jumping in mid series this one looked really good and I have high hopes.  (NetGalley)

A Cajun Christmas Killing by Ellen Byron - So far this series has been firmly on my list of favorite cozy mystery series so I'm really looking forward to this latest book.  But seriously, how can we be talking Christmas already??  (NetGalley)

Currently:

Reading:  Lowcountry Bonfire by Susan M. Boyer and No River to Wide by Emilie Richards

Listening:  I'm still listening to podcasts though I'm starting to miss audio books.  This week I've really been enjoying The Simple Show from Tsh Oxenreider who blogs at The Art of Simple.

Watching:  J and I are watching The Great British Bake Off (or Baking Show if you're PBS) and really enjoying it.  I'm struggling to catch up with Doctor Who.  I've really loved this season but I have a hard time finding time to watch it because it's a show you really have to sit down and pay attention too.  Most of the time the TV is more just on while I'm doing other things.

Off the Blog:

This week was a little odd.  The town I live in surrounds a military base and almost everyone I know (including myself) has worked on base at one time or another.  On Tuesday all of a sudden there were reports of a active shooter on base and I think the entire town came to a screeching halt and stared at the news.  The shooter was reported to be in the building I used to work in which made it really feel personal.  After hours it came out that the 911 calls that started everything where incorrect.  There's been a lot of backlash about the big reaction and how much of a waste of time it was since there was really nothing going on.  I'm grateful it ended up being a big nothing.  Everyone is safe and hopefully the response team are able to be even more effective from what they learned just in case there really is an active shooter one day.  It did make for an eventful day!

The Tornado has finished up his first week of Space Camp and has loved it.  He's sad it's over but is looking forward to going back for Robotics in a couple of weeks.  He's already lobbying to go back next year and I'm pretty sure is counting down the days until he can go to real Space Camp which is overnight.  Apparently there are bunk beds involved which is incredibly exciting.

Other than that not a very eventful week.  We're getting ready for our 2nd RV trip later this week which I'm really excited about.  We're heading up to Chattanooga to go to the aquarium and the children's museum and a few other things.  I think it'll be a fun trip!

  1. Dead of Winter - I like that title. Glad to hear the shooter alert was a false alarm- there have been so many lately it's unreal.

Yay for Space Camp! Amazing hoe appealing bunk beds can be right? :)

Have fun in Chattanooga and have a great 4th!

  2. I remember loving No River Too Wide, in fact liked all the Goddess books. Bunk beds for sure are a mystery fun thing that kids who don't have them dream about! Bizarre thing about the shooter, even though it was fake news, still scary. Looking forward to some of those reviews coming up.

  3. So glad to hear the shooter alert was false. That is so scary to hear so nearby though. Sounds like Tornado had a great time and lots of exciting things on his horizon.

  4. How could you resist a haunted library indeed :) can't blame you! That story from your past work sounds really messy :/ glad everything turned out alright!

  5. Thank goodness the shooter was a false alarm. My sister was on base in Texas when they had an active shooter about 5 years or so ago. It was very scary.
I hope you have a great week and read some great books!

  6. We have to I've shooter training where I work but no surprise since I'm in law enforcement. It's very stressful. Glad everything was ok. I love the sound of that RV trip to Chattanooga! What fun, please post about it!

  7. I really need to try Heather Graham at some point. The shooting sounds scary, even if it was a false alarm. I am glad we live in a country where guns are hard to get hold off. I find it so scary.

  8. Heather Graham!! Must grab. :) So you are such a bad influence on me as I had to go check out that Death Overdue and I ended up with another while I was there! LOL. :)

Glad it wasn't an actual shooter but just a miss communication.

    Have a great week!

  9. Wow the possible active shooter situation must have been so stressful! I remember a year or so ago there was an active shooter on the campus of the university in my hometown-- a university where my friends attended and where my father taught. It was stressful just watching and waiting for news ((luckily the shooter surrendered and no one was harmed)).

  10. Nine Lessons looks like a fun read.

Whoa! Those reports of a shooting nearby must have been stressful until you found out it was NOTHING.

    Better NOTHING than something, though.

    Glad Tornado enjoyed space camp.

Have a great week, and here are MY WEEKLY UPDATES

  12. How awesome Tornado can go to these camps. I know weekly, summer camps can be expensive. How awful about that false shooter report. Well, while there was confusion it was a good learning experience for the response teams and I'm sure they gained valuable information on how to deal with future, similar experiences.

  13. All your new books look good, Katherine! It's been awhile since I read a Graham book. Death Overdue sounds like it will be a good one, in particular. I'm so behind in Doctor Who. We've seen the first season with the latest doctor (and everything before it), but that's about it. I am a lot like you in that I seem to always be doing something while the TV is on. I am sure I miss a lot, but sometimes that's the only way things get done.

I am glad the situation on the base turned out to be nothing. I heard about it on the news. With all the other shootings going on, it was a big relief even for me this far away.

I am glad Tornado enjoyed Space Camp! That sounds like so much fun. Mouse is enjoying her summer program. She even asked me if she could go on a Friday or two. Usually she's home with me those days since I have the day off from work. She is torn though--she wants to be there with her friends but she also wants to spend the time with me . . . I'm sure it's not cute for her, of course, but it's kind of cute to me. I told her we'd compromise and I'd let her do an occasional Friday there with her friends. She seems happy with that idea--and I'm choosing a couple weeks where it won't cost me more money.

Enjoy your trip! I will be taking some time off after next week from my blog. I need the break and we have quite a bit going on.

    Have a great week, Katherine!

  15. I'm definitely headed your way so I can tag along in the RV for a day or two. (lol) I totally get your frustration with the false report. I'm an Air Force Vet, and somehow I always end up being right near a military base. Here, I'm not far from Ft Bragg, which is where a lot of people deploy from. When something happens, it sure does cause a major panic for sure. But as you said, better to be safe than sorry, you know? I checked out a few things on Pinterest today, which was pretty neat. Have a good one! Hugs...RO

  16. Now I am doubly jealous of the Tornado. I want to go to robotics camp, too! The gun violence stuff is too scary. We had a shooter here that killed 13 people and it was next to the high school. Sebastian wasn't allowed to have a phone in any of his classrooms so he used to just leave it in his locker. It was hell not knowing what was going on. I still haven't been able to get into listening to podcasts... maybe someday I will find just the right one and it will pull me in. Have a great holiday and a fab week. :)

  17. I keep buying Heather Graham's books when they go on sale but I need to make time to read them. Space camp sounds like a lot of fun and I saw tornado's picture on Instagram. He looks so cute in the Nasa gear. I would love to have gone to space camp as a kid. That shooter scare is crazy and good thing no one was hurt. We just had a training at work on what to do if a shooter came in to the building. It's scary to think but it's good to be safe. I hope you have a great week and Happy 4th of July!

  18. I'm glad everything turned out okay! I can see the concern, though. It seems to happen more and more often that the active shooter alerts aren't true and the more often that happens the less people will be concerned when it actually happens :/

  19. Lots of new NetGalley books this week! The active shooter situation sounds really scary. I am so glad that everything turned out okay in the end. I am glad your son has enjoyed his space camp. It sounds like a lot of fun! Have a great week!

  20. How scary! I'm so glad that it was a false alarm and that everyone is okay. I have been majorly addicted to podcasts, too, but I did start a new audiobook yesterday and I'm enjoying it a lot. I feel like they kind of took over my life for a bit. I'm still totally obsessed with them though.

I have one more episode of Doctor Who to watch. I think I will watch it today. I have really liked this season too. I love Bill!!!

  21. I'm delighted to hear that your alarm over some lone maladjusted idiot waving around a weapon was false. And I love the fact that the Tornado finds bunk beds such a draw. I hope your summer holiday continues to be busy and peaceful:).

  22. Dead of Winter and Death Overdue are both on my wishlist. Hope you have a great 4th!

  23. I'm glad the base situation turned out to be nothing. It is incredibly scary. Like you've described, everything stops in the town. Even away from it. I still remember the Ft. Hood shooting (now close to 10 years ago) and then there was another one a couple years ago - and that time my brother was there. Both times I was glued to the news.

I hope you enjoy your trip! I always envied RV trips. We only ever went on day trips to places like Six Flags growing up.
