This Week in Reading - July 30

It's Sunday Post time!  This is hosted by the awesome Caffeinated Book Reviewer and gives us all a chance to recap our week.

What I Got:

Sound of Fear by Marta Perry - I read an earlier book in this mystery with a bit of romance series and really loved it so I'm excited to try this one about a woman trying to discover the truth about her past (NetGalley)

Death at the Emerald by R.J. Koreto - I haven't heard much about this series though the detective's name (Lady Frances Ffolkes) does sound familiar.  Regardless, this historical mystery into a 30 year old missing persons case sounds like a mystery I just can't resist!  (NetGalley)

Cold as Ice by Julie Mulhern - This is the newest in one of my favorite cozy mystery series!  I didn't even look at the blurb.  As soon as I saw the author's name I just clicked request.  I can't wait to read it!  (NetGalley)

The Stolen Marriage by Diane Chamberlain - I haven't had much luck with this author in the past but the blurb on this one really caught my eye.  The main character works in a polio ward (it's set in the 1940s) and I just recently had a discussion with my Grandmother about polio and the devastation it inflicted on the community so I'm curious to see this from a fictional angle.  (Publisher)

Reading:  The Escape by Mary Balogh and Shadow Girl by Gerry Schmitt

Listening:  I'm still listening to podcasts but I'm on the wait list of A Study in Scarlet Women by Sherry Thomas which I should be getting soon.

Watching:  I've been on a bit of a movie watching binge while I'm trying to clear off some of the huge amount of movies I've recorded but never watched.  The bulk of which are Hallmark movies - I can't resist their mysteries - but there are quite a few regular movies as well.  I've watched Finding Vivian Meir which was good and I'm a big fan of The Garage Sale Mysteries on Hallmark.  J and I have also started watching Shetland on Netflix and so far are really liking it!

Off the Blog:

So the big news is we got a kitten!  The Tornado has been wanting a kitten for ages and I've been taking allergy shots for 2 months now so I'm as good as I'm going to be.  We finally decided that this weekend was the weekend and headed over to a local rescue group.  Now the Tornado has been obsessed with the idea of getting an orange kitten for months and what is the first kitten we see?  A tiny little orange kitten!  We looked at a number of others and I really wanted to take them all home with me but I held strong!  In the end we ended up getting the orange kitten we saw first.  He's a total sweetheart and very social.  Apparently he had a bit of a rough start.  He was found at about 4 weeks old and had extensive damage to all 4 pads on his feet.  However, he's healing up nicely and is really the most social snuggly cat I've ever come across (he was bottle fed for awhile so I'm wondering if that has something to do with).  Because we just got him yesterday (Saturday) we're still all getting to know each other and the name is being hotly debated.  I'm sure there will be a lot more kitten talk next week!  Until then here's two of the many (many) pictures I've taken so far.

On the way home

  1. Cold As Ice is on Netgalley already? Wow, Mulhern's really writing isn't she? I need to get moving, I haven't read #5 yet! And yay for Shetland. I'm still on season three but hoping to finish soon. I think it gets even better as it goes!

Congrats on the kitten! What a cutey!

  2. You got a little lovely baby! OMG! He is so cute! Love him ever so much please! And have a great reading week :)

  3. KITTEN!!! You could call him Hastings, if he's an Agatha Christie fan. (Easier to say than Poirot - lol) or oh!! Hercules! (Sorry, I'll stop now.) He's so cute! Have a great week :)

  4. Awwww, love the kitten! And he looks like he loves books so even better :) Have great week!

  5. Oh what a sweet kitten. I have the Chamberlain book, to be honest I never even looked at what it was about but that polio thing will be interesting. I remember when we were kids we had to have a rest in the afternoon because people were still nervous about it.

  6. What an adorable cat, and I'm so thrilled he found a loving forever home. Congrats!

  7. You got some interesting sounding new books :). The Garage sale mysteries series sounds like a fun one to watch.

Congrats on the new kitten. She looks adorable!

  8. Awww, he's so cute! My cat is a rescue, too, but he's getting old so we were thinking about rescuing a second one. Good luck with the name!

  9. I was tempted by the DIane Chamberlain but have been trying to not request things!! Aw your kitten is so cute. Can't wait to hear the name :) Have a great week!

  10. I didn't know Julie Mulhern has another book coming out, Katherine. Yay! I've added it to my list. Your kitten is so cute. It's so hard to go to a shelter and see all the kittens, cats, puppies and dogs. I feel so sorry for them all. I'll look forward to more photos!

Enjoy your kitten and your books!

  11. I have The Stolen Marriage and can't wait to read it...but Cold as Ice? I'm very excited...however, I'm reluctant to request it on NetGalley, now that I have a manageable number of books to read. But I might not be able to resist.

I love orange cats...we had one called Sebastian, but we were living in the foothills throughout his life...and he repeatedly escaped the house and roamed the woods, encountering all kinds of danger, including a coyote...finally. I'm sure your son's cat will fare better.

Have a great week! Here are MY WEEKLY UPDATES

  12. OMGosh he is adorbs! So lucky! ^__^

  13. Sounds like some great books you go this week. The kitten is adorable! Happy reading.

  14. AWWWWW! What a cutie! My daughter wants another cat but we can't get one with the one we have currently plus I am allergic to cats and one I am ok with but two I would die. :) We are good at the moment with a Dog, Cat, Hamster and a bird occasionally (its my moms) I can't wait to see what you name him!

I am so smitten with the kitten (no rhyming intended) I was going to write something else and I forgot.

Have a great week, Katherine! Happy Reading! ox :)

  15. I am so behind on Julie Mulhern's series! I love all the Hallmark Mysteries. :) Can you believe the whole month on August is going to feature a new Garage Sale Mystery each Sunday! I so can't wait though my favorite is Murder She Baked but it's cause I have always crushed on Cameron

    Have a great week!
    Week in Review

  16. The kitten is adorable!! I hope that he adjusts well to your home :) It took my cat a while to adjust (and come out of hiding) after I adopted him, but he was a couple years old-- I think kittens adjust a lot quicker.

  17. Julie Mulhern has another book coming out?? I haven't read the last one yet, so I'd better get a move on it!

  18. What an adorable kitten. Can't wait to hear the name you settle on!

  19. OMG your kitten is so cute! I can't wait to see what you guys name him!

    Crystal Book Snob

  20. Oh he is darling!! Can't wait to hear more about him as he settles in :) And a bottle baby. Yep. That'll do it. Gladys was a bottle baby, too. They're very special :)

  21. The kitten looks adorable - what a heartbreak that at only a handful of weeks old, he has already had such a hard time... And lovely that you will give him a home with plenty of love:). I like the sound of Cold as Ice and Death at the Emerald and hope you have a wonderful week with the newest member of your family.

  22. SO ADORABLE!!! :)

Check out my Sunday Post at El's Book Reviews!

Hope you have a great day!

  23. I absolutely adore cats, but my allergies are just terrible - I wonder if allergy shots would work for me!

  24. Kitty! I am dying to know what you have decided to name him! Have a fabulous week. :)

  25. He's adorable. Wasn't Penny also orange?? Penny? The one from my mom?

  26. We started watching Midnight, Texas but mostly we are catching up on DVRd shows like the new season of Broadchurch on BBC America. The kitty is adorable! Hope you have a lovely week,

  27. What an adorable kitty. You are going above and beyond because I cant say I would be willing to get allergy shots! Your son must be so happy.
Let me know how you like The Escape, that's a book I was curious about.

  28. AWWWWW! What a cutie! Sounds like he's not letting his rough start scar him much, thank goodness. Can't wait to hear about your adventures and his name :) HOpe the allergy shots do the job, I know several people where they have worked miracles.

Have a great week and enjoy those new books!

  29. Your kitty is so cute! Every time a friend shares an Austin or Williamson Co. shelter post, I want to go get all those pets. I told Richard about six months ago or so I wanted to have a dog farm like in the end of the live action 101 Dalmatians so I can adopt all the dogs. I hope you guys settle on a name soon. He's so cute! I hope your allergies don't do too bad with this little guy. Have a great week!

  30. I'm a couple of books behind on Julie Mulhern's series, but I always enjoy them. I just finished reading Shadow Girl. I look forward to seeing what you thought of it. Congrats on the new kitty! How adorable. Have a great week!

  31. I'm almost finished with the Shetland season. Really enjoying it too as are a lot of people! What a sweetie pie. I love kittens! Have fun getting to know each other and falling for that cutie:)

    My Sunday Post

  32. Congratulations on your new addition! Such a cute kitty! I hope you allergy shots did the trick and you have no problems with having him around. Enjoy all of your new books!

  33. Your kitten is totally adorable! I always wanted an orange kitten, too. Maybe next time... though I've become very fond of our tortie, and I also love black cats. I hope you're enjoying The Escape (I love Mary Balogh!), and have fun with A Study in Scarlet Women whenever it comes in. Have a lovely week, and good luck with the allergies!

  34. Awww, what a sweetie, kittens are the cutest! Have a good week!

  35. Can't wait to find out what you guys will name your new kitten. My kids have pet allergies, but we have short list of hypoallergenic dogs that they will be able to tolerate. So I'm on a hunt for the perfect puppy for our family. It's going slow.

And I've heard some good things about Shetland. Much check it out after I finish binge watching Riverdale.
