Friday Linkups: Dark Saturday

It's Friday linkup time!  I'm linking up with the Book Blogger Hop hosted by Coffee Addicted Writer, Book Beginnings of Fridays hosted by Rose City Reader, and the Friday 56 hosted by Freda's Voice

This Week's Book Blogger Hop Question
What is your go-to drink and/or snack while reading?

My Answer:
I'm not a big snacker while reading mostly because I tend to get absorbed in my book and not realize that I'm eating until I've finished off the bag of chips or the cookies or whatever without even realizing it!  I do love a nice cup of tea while reading though!  I'm a big fan of green tea with just a hint of lemon.

This week's book is for a blog tour next week and I'm really enjoying it though it's way darker than my usual reads.  Nicci French is an author I hadn't really come across before I started blogging but I loved the sound of her books and her main character, psychotherapist Frieda Klein.  So of course when I saw Dark Saturday on a list of tours there was no way I could resist!  It's super dark and creepy but so far it's also really good.

The Beginning:
She isn't afraid.  Being stabbed doesn't cause a stabbing pain.  It had felt more like a punch, with an ache flowing through her body in waves, and then her legs had given way and she was on the floor, her knife rattling on the hard surface.

My Thoughts:
See what I mean by dark?  This kind of a flashback so the tone is different from the rest of the book thankfully.  I don't really like the present tense of the opening.

The 56:
"You were having a panic attack."
"Yes."
"And they've continued."
"Yes.  Attack is the right word for it.  I wake at night and I know it's coming.  It's crouching and it's going to get me."

My Thoughts:
This is a conversation between Frieda and one of her patients.  The description of the panic attack is so vivid I can almost picture something crouching in the corner.

So what do you think?  Keep reading?  What are your favorite reading snacks?

  1. I would definitely keep reading, with an opening like that. :) And I don't snack much while eating either, although I do like tea or a soft drink occasionally (or coffee rarely if I'm half asleep) lol.

  2. That is so true about eating mindlessly. If I do eat, I have hot tea or chips.

I see you are reading DARK SATURDAY. I was to get it sent to me, but never got it. Oh well.

    ENJOY your books and weekend.

    Happy Hopping!!

  3. I don't know the author either. The book does sound like something I'd enjoy. My go-to is Diet Pepsi. I always have one at hand when reading. This week I have an urban fantasy - Midnight Curse by Melissa F. Olson. Happy reading!

  8. I loved this one, too, and have read every book in the series so far. This week—I'm so excited!—I got my copy of the seventh one, Sunday Morning Coming Down. It is a print version, just like all the others I have in the series, since e-books haven't been available. But I love seeing the books lined up on my shelf.

Thanks for sharing, and here's mine: “AFTER ANNA”

  9. I have always meant to read something by Nikki French. Her mysteries sound so intense and these quotes only cements that.

  11. Coffee is my number one go-to drink. When I'm snacking I am exactly the same, I don't even realise how much I've consumed!

  12. Did she stab herself? I wonder since it said "her knife." How odd. My Friday Quotes

  14. I don't like books like this in general, but gosh, this sounds good! I do like psychotherapy books though.

I am a big reading snacker, but then I won't eat a meal afterwards because I am too full, ha ha. That is why I have been trying to snack on healthier foods. :)

  16. I've read a few Nikki French books and did start the first couple in this series. However, it's not one of my usual genres so I didn't continue. Hope you enjoy it.

  17. I can definitely relate to the green tea as a reading beverage, although I don't really drink while reading all that often. When I do, though, I like my green tea sweetened with honey, and with a bit of Half and Half. Very relaxing!

I've never heard of Nina French, but the fact that this book is creepy is enough for me not to want to investigate further. Lol. Hope you continue to enjoy it, though!! :)

Thanks for dropping by and commenting on my BBH post!! Enjoy your weekend!! <3 :)

  21. I don't usually eat while reading either except for when I can't put a book down and it is time for a meal. I don't do that when my family is around but I have been known to read while I eat my lunch at work. The book sounds great which is good since I have it on my shelf to read!

  22. I'm exactly the opposite when it comes to reading. I forget anything is there! I like the description about panic attacks - it is very accurate!
