Top Ten Tuesday - Popular Authors I've Never Read

It's time for one of my favorite link ups - Top Ten Tuesday with The Broke and the Bookish.  This week the list is for the Top Ten Popular Authors I've Never Read.

1.  J.R.R. Tolkien - I have never, not once, read any Tolkien.  The Hobbit was optional reading one time in high school but I read something else.  Despite the fact that I have seen all 3 Lord of the Rings movies in extended from and liked them and despite the fact that we own at least 1 copy of all of Tolkien's books I've yet to pick one up.

2.  Kathryn Stockett - I've never read The Help.  People kept shoving it at me soon after it came out telling me I really must read it and my contrary streak showed up and I refused.

3.  John Green - Emma has read pretty much everything he's ever written and I've heard countless people rave about his books but I've never picked one up.

4. Margaret Atwood - I've owned The Handmaiden's Tale at least twice in my life but have yet to actually read this or any other Atwood books.

5.  Stieg Larsson - I've never read The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo or any of the other 2 books in the series even when it was a book club choice, even when the movie came and even when everyone was talking about it continuously.

6.  Stephen King - I was traumatized by the movie Pet Sematary when I was 8 or 9.  I never really forgive Stephen King even though I went onto really like The Shining.

7.  Sue Monk Kidd - I have seen The Secret Life of Bees on countless favorite lists and The Invention of Wings has been all over the currently reading list but I have yet to pick up one of her books.

8.  Diana Gabaldon - I've always been a bit intimidated by the sheer size of The Outlander books

9.  Neil Gaiman - One of his books was a selection for book club that I never got around too and while I have a few others bookmarked to read I just never have.  I comfort myself with the knowledge that the episodes he writes for Doctor Who are some of my least favorite so maybe I wouldn't like the books either.

10.  Rainbow Rowell - One day, one day!

  1. Great list! I actually have a few of the same authors on my never read list too. I would definitely recommend Rainbow Rowell's Fangirl, it was so amazing. Don't leave her on this never-read list for long! :)

  2. We have a couple of authors in common here!
I definitely could have put Larsson on my list--and I've never been able to make it through any of the Tolkien that I've tried.

    1. Glad I'm not the only one whose left some of these unread! Larsson has been on my list for awhile but I've heard some things about certain scenes that I'm not sure I want in my head so I've always chickened out!

  3. The Shining is a really good book... but Stephen King is really weird. Even when I'm liking one of his books there will always be a few WTFs mixed in somewhere. John Green is amazing... I would rec him to anybody. TFIOS and Looking for Alaska especially!

  4. I'm with you on several of these. But, seriously, The Help is awesome. I did it as an audiobook/actual book and I was blown away.

    1. I know, I'm going to have to read it one day. I'm interested in it now that some of the hype has gone down. When my contrary streak flares up it's a bit stubborn!

  5. I know his movies are always a bit odd so the WTFs don't really surprise me! John Green and Rainbow Rowell are probably the authors I'll break down and read soonest!
