This Week in Reading - September 15

It's Sunday Post time!  This is hosted by the awesome Caffeinated Book Reviewer and gives us all a chance to recap our week.

What I Got:

The Case of the Wandering Scholar by Kate Saunders - I adored the first book in this series and waited anxiously for the next book for literally years.  I just recently gave up and tried to make peace with the fact it would never happen when I saw this on NetGalley and couldn't request fast enough.  (NetGalley)

A Very Mummy Holiday by Lynn Cahoon - I love this series and this author so I always grab the newest one as soon as I see it.  (NetGalley)

Memories and Murder by Lynn Cahoon - Same as above! (NetGalley)

Apple Cider Slaying by Julie Anne Lindsey - I don't know very much about this author but the cover and title seemed so wonderfully fallish that I couldn't pass it up!  (NetGalley)

Penny For Your Secrets by Anna Lee Huber - I really love Huber's Lady Darby series so I figured I'd give this one a try.  (NetGalley)

Currently:

ReadingThe House on Hallowed Ground by Nancy Cole Silverman and Vanish with the Rose by Barbara Michaels

Listening:  How to Date Your Dragon by Molly Harper

Watching:  Not a huge amount but we just started the newest available season of The Great British Bake-Off on Netflix.

Off the Blog:

This was a pretty hellish week.  Last week we moved my grandparents from their home in south Mississippi to an assisted living facility here in north Alabama.  It didn't exactly go as planned.   My grandfather's health has taken a very dramatic turn in the last few weeks and my grandmother's mental state has done the same.  We were able to get my grandmother settled in assisted living and she's doing okay and seems happy but is so confused and out of it that we don't really know what to do.  Luckily the staff there has been wonderful as have the other residents.  We ended up taking my grandfather straight to the ER when we got in town and he's just recently been discharged to a rehab facility to regain his strength.  He had pneumonia but the main problem is that he's just not eating.  We will reevaulate in 2 weeks but without a miracle we are looking at at best a skilled nursing home for him.

Then Monday my neck problems flared up so bad that I ended up in the ER myself.  The pain was so bad I couldn't even form sentences or coherent thoughts.  Thankfully it's a bit better but I have a whole new series of tests I get to do.  Then the next morning my phone rang at 6AM and it was Emma who had been in a bad wreck (she ended up flipping her car) on the way to work.  Thankfully, other then a few scratches and some muscle soreness, she's not hurt.

I'm still trying to get in a homeschool routine for the Tornado and it's been a bit rough.   I've been told that it's pretty easy to catch up but I still feel guilty that it has slid so far onto the back burner.  But I'm exhausted.  I haven't been able to read or visit much and even missed two posts this week which I haven't done since 2014 but there just hasn't been time for anything but the absolute basics.

  1. Ooh I like the look of both The House on Hallowed Ground and The case of the Wandering Scholar. I'll have to look into those- with fall here (or at least imminent) I find myself gravitating towards mysteries a bit.

I'm so sorry to hear about your neck pain! That sounds awful frankly. I hope they can help you with it soon, and your grandparents- that's hard. I went through the rehab thing with my mom (she hated it after cancer surgery) and my dad too- not a pleasant experience but they have to get their strength back too. Sending prayers and well wishes your way and for them too!

  2. Hang in there. I hope things calm down. 😥

Did they change your grandmother's meds at all? My grandmother became very confused in rehab after hip surgery and we were worried something had gone wrong with the oxygen during surgery or something, but when she got back to the nursing home the staff doctor figured out it was the combination of meds they had her on. Sending good energies for both of them, and your neck. 👍✨

Have a better new week. 🌞

  4. Oh my goodness what a week. Anyone of those things on their own is stressful enough. Yes you will catch up with the home schooling, all things will be achieved in the right time. Sending love and just give up trying to do it all. Hope the neck pain can be sorted soon.

  5. Wow - you have had a week. So sorry for all the things. Hope your neck will improve. If nothing else, the stress involved here could certainly make you way more tense than usual and that wouldn't help with neck issues. Glad Emma was OK. Don't worry about the homeschooling. You'll get it sorted when things calm down and with a 'class of one' it's not too difficult to progress faster. As to your grandparents, well, change is tough on older people. Your grandmother's confusion is not uncommon at all and I suspect her caretakers will assist with orienting her more fully. A little time and maybe she'll be fine. Your grandfather's case is more complicated, but it may be that skilled nursing will be what is needed. Eldercare is hard, but I'm so glad that they are now closer to family. Will be thinking of you and all your family this week. Big hugs!

  6. I wish I lived next door to you. I’d bring you homemade soup, bread and lasagna. And flowers, because you need some brightness and sunshine in your life right now! Sending you the biggest hugs and I hope everything settles down soon.

Poor Emma, that had to be so scary but thankfully she’s alright. And your neck, wow, you really had too much going on all at once. Sending you healing vibes!
Hoping the caretaker for your grandparents will get this sorted. xo

  8. All your new books look great! I have consider the Apple Cider one but I am really trying to cut down...lol. I guess we will see if I falter! :) I am so sorry to hear the moving of your grandparents hasn't gone as smoothly as you had hoped. :( I have a friend who is having a lot of neck problems and it makes him lose his train of thought a lot but seems like no doctor can find a good solution. :( Hope yours can.

Have a great week and happy reading,

  10. I'm so sorry to hear about all that you've had to deal with, Katherine. Your neck pain sounds so awful. I hope you get some relief from that. It's also really emotionally and physically draining to make decisions about family members. I hope your grandparents rally and the assisted living will work out.

I hope you're able to do some reading and to enjoy your books. Take care of yourself. And I hope this next week is better for you all.

  11. I get it. You do what you need and we will be here. My brother called yesterday and my Mom (92) is staying in the nursing home so we are selling her home of 45 years (and ours in childhood). At least, she is already in the nursing home and mentally fine. So we will be going through things soon on a trip to Iowa. It is both mentally and physically challenging and my own move isn't finished unpacking. I hope this week is much better and you get a bit of a break!

  12. You've had so much on, I wouldn't worry too much about the missed posts!
I'm sorry to hear about your neck flaring up and the situation with your grandparents but I'm very glad to hear that your daughter is ok!
Hopefully, the coming weeks bring some much needed calm for you to regroup.

  14. I'm sorry that everything seems to be happening at once, and to be in such pain has to be making things worse. Your health and taking care of your family come first, so you'll get back into the reading and catch up with the school part once you're 100%. Taking care of you is so important right now. I hate that they're doing the Bake-off differently instead of doing them all at once, but I'm always there on Friday to get my fix of this fantastic show. Sure hope you feel better soon, and thank goodness Emma is feeling ok. Sending lots of hugs your way. RO

  15. What an overwhelming week for you. My mother had a similar problem. Turned out to be a female infection of all things. I am praying for all of you and hope for the best.

  16. Oh my word, Katherine. Damn! That's one bitch of a week. How scary and upsetting on so many fronts. I'll keep all of yall in my prayers. Deep breaths. Anything that's not a must can wait.

  17. Wow, you really have had a hellish week. I'm so sorry! Life can be so tough sometimes. Hang in there! Things can only get better, right?

On the bright side, it looks like you got some great books. I'll have to look up the Saunders series. It sounds like a good one.

  18. The Case of the Wandering Scholar sounds so good! I hope you love all your new books. I hope you love Huber's book. I requested that one too. I really enjoyed the first in the series and need to get to the second one. I like Verity quite a bit. I am so sorry to hear about everything your grandparents are going through you--and you. It can't be easy with their health issues and your own top of it. You have so much on your plate. I am sending hugs and prayers, Katherine.
