This Week in Reading - March 11

It's Sunday Post time!  This is hosted by the awesome Caffeinated Book Reviewer and gives us all a chance to recap our week.

What I Got:

The Sugarhouse Blues by Mariah Stewart - The first book in the Hudson Sisters trilogy was one of my favorite reads of 2017 so I'm super excited about this one! (NetGalley)

Shelved Under Murder by Victoria Gilbert - I loved the first book in the cozy mystery series involving a librarian in the Blue Ridge Mountains.  I was especially excited because the mystery was a combination of old and new and this second book seems to be continuing the trend. (NetGalley)

Mardi Gras Murder by Ellen Byron - I love this series set in Louisiana and this newest entry sounds really fun!  (NetGalley)

Lighthouse Beach by Shelley Noble - I really don't know that much about this one but I read an early book by Noble and enjoyed it and the cover is wonderfully beachy.  (Edelweiss)

The Good Luck Sister by Jill Shalvis - I'm super excited about getting this one from this new Shalvis series.  I just got the first one to read and then I can get to this one.  (Edelweiss)

Rainy Day Friends by Jill Shalvis - Another Jill Shalvis!  There may have been a bit of a happy dance with this one arrived.  I'm super excited to get started on this series though I'm going to read the first book before I get started. (Edelweiss)

Reading:  I just started A Brush with Shadows by Anna Lee Huber and am about halfway through with The Silent Companions by Laura Purcell.

Listening:  Secrets of the Tulip Sisters by Susan Mallery

Watching:  We just started the 2nd season of Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency.  I recorded it back in October than promptly forgot all about it.  So far it's okay but not as good as the first season.  We're also watching The Alienist.  I read the book when it first came out and remember almost nothing about it.  I'm curious to see how it all plays out.

Off the Blog:

We have internet again!  It was a huge relief to all of us though it was kind of fun to be unplugged for a weekend even though it might not have been by choice.  Things seem to be starting to bloom here so allergies are starting to go nuts.  Mine have been okay thanks to shots and my standard medicine routine but the poor Tornado is struggling.  It seems the only thing that really works for him is Benadryl which doesn't last as long as some of the other medicines.  Luckily it doesn't seem to make him too sleepy.

Next week is Book Fair at his school so that'll be most of my week.  After that we've got Spring Break coming up which will be nice.  We're just heading down to visit my grandparents for a few days and maybe take a day trip to Natchez, Mississippi.  It'll be low-key and I think we're all looking forward to it.  Other than that I'm trying to get summer traveling and daycamps for the Tornado lined up.  He's doing Space Camp again but I'm not sure how many or what else.

  1. Yay for internet! I noticed some green stuff starting to come out here too and then we got dumped on with snow again, so I guess spring is still struggling to get started up here! Hope the allergies aren't too bad, that's the one yucky thing about spring unfortunately...

Curious about Dirk Gently's, I think I may have seen it on Netflix but not sure. Hope the second season picks up!

  2. I read The Alienist a few years ago, I remember enjoying it, but not much beyond that. I'd be interested to see the series. Have a great week.

  3. Ug, I forgot that allergy season is coming up. Hopefully things calm down around your area. And oh no! I hate internet problems. They always seem to hit me at the worst possible times... Have a good week! :)

  4. Ah great set of books coming in, I read the Lost and Found Sisters, the one before the Good Luck Sister and enjoyed it and now I'm ashamed to say I can not remember much about it! I'll be reading on with them though. Oh dear Spring brings with it not so good things for those who have allergies.

  5. We still have snow, I wish spring came already. Glad your internet is back :)

  6. Yes, we had a very warm day yesterday. A cold front is coming today though. Our live oaks are shedding leaves and that means spring is about here (weird, I know, lives oaks are odd trees).

I'll be interested in hearing what you think about The Silent Companions. And hope you have a great book fair.

  7. Yay for the internet! I wish spring would hurry up and get here. But yeah allergies are no fun. We have a book fair next week too. Enjoy all your new books and have a great week!

  8. So glad you got your internet back! I got the Mardi Gras book too! I see another one I need to get though! :)

    Happy Reading,
    Week in Review

  9. Wahoo! I'm glad that you got internet back! But that's a bummer about the allergies... I'm so not ready for spring allergies. Mine were horrible last year!

  10. I've yet to read anything by Jill Shalvis but she keeps cropping up on my radar, I really should add some of her books to the wishlist.

  11. Glad you got your internet back, my family would go nuts. We just talked about doing an unplugged weekend.
I am not looking forward to allergies, my son usually has them pretty bad and me too.
Book fairs are very dangerous! ;)

Have a great week, Katherine! Happy Reading! :)

  12. Boo for the allergies, especially the poor Tornado! 😞

    Yay for Space Camp!🚀

    Have a wonderful week. ☺

  13. Oh, yes, life without the Internet is definitely not a fun life...but then I recall that none of us had it a few years ago.

I like the sound of Rainy Day Friends, even though I haven't yet read my copy of my first Jill Shalvis book (Lost and Found Sisters). I must read that one soon, so I can dive into these other books.

Ah, yes, allergy season. I take a Zyrtec pill every morning...and it helps, but when I see gardens or blossoms, I worry. But I do love these signs of spring.

Enjoy your week, and here are MY WEEKLY UPDATES

  14. Yay for internet! I think my household would wilt away without it. But we also don’t hav cable up here in the mountain, so we rely on streaming for t.v. Hope you and your son get to feeling better soon, allergies are the worst! I went to Space Camp one summer and it was absolutely amazing. Glad to hear he enjoys so much. Happy Sunday!!! Enjoy the upcoming vacation too.

  15. Nice Haul and no internet is a scary thing. I work from home and depend on it. I loved the Book Fair at school and volunteered when my kids where in school.

  16. I love what you got this week, and I am currently enjoying a cozy mystery also!! Hope this week is better for you!!

  17. Lots of lovely books. I hope you have a good week in reading. I just got back in my home after a week of no power so I am behind in things. Have a good week. =)

  18. I'm really sorry about the allergies - it's horrible. If it's any consolation, I suffered terribly from my teens onwards until my late 30s when it started to ease up and now apart from a few sneezes and slightly itchy eyes, I have very little trouble- so maybe yours will improve with age... As for the books, I keep thinking about getting hold of a Jill Shalvis as I KEEP seeing her name around the boards... Have a great week, Katherine:)

  19. That's the only thing about Spring that I dislike, my allergies go crazy. The Sugarhouse Blues sounds like something I'd enjoy. Have a great week!

  20. Yay for the new Jill Shalvis books! I plan to read them next month and am quite excited to get started. I know you are happy to have the internet back up. It is tough to go without it once you are used to having it. I hope you have a great week!

  21. Nice haul! I got Shelved for Murder too, and just downloaded Rainy Day Friends. I'm glad your internet is back on, though I agree, it would be nice to unplug for a day or two. Sorry about your allergies, and the Tornado's. I think mine might be starting, too, but luckily they're not too bad. Enjoy your spring break, and have a lovely week!

  22. I like Jill Shalvis and usually read her books. I also had not internet for the past few days and just got it back! Huge relief! Have a great week.

  23. These titles sound good. Yay for book fair. It's work to set up, sell, and break down. I hope his school makes a great profit.

  24. I’m glad your internet is back! (Though it’s really nice to unplug from that.) I hope you have a great week and enjoy your new books.

Aj @ Read All The Things!

  25. Allergies have hit here, too. I'm taking my two allergy pills and my entire face hurts. I hope you enjoy your upcoming trip. I'm on spring break right now. I have some hair and other self-love appointments set up this week.

  26. Yaay for internet but boo for allergies. Enjoy the Book Fair and your new books - I love book fairs (unfortunately most of them take place during Autumn in my city so I will have to wait a while for them).

  27. The Sugarhouse Blues cover is so lovely.

I have the book Secrets of the Tulip Sisters. I haven’t read it yet. I’m looking forward to what you think about the audiobook version.

  28. The Stewart book looks good. Such a pretty cover. Happy reading!

  29. I see a dog in the book cover!!! Sounds like a series I'd enjoy reading. I'll go grab the first book.

  30. Now that I've been to New Orleans I love all books that are set there. Looks like you got some fun mysteries this week. Thanks for visiting me at Lisa Loves Literature earlier. Sorry it took me a while to get back. Hope you have a great week!
