Friday Linkups: A Fine Summer's Day

It's Friday linkup time!  I'm linking up with the Book Blogger Hop hosted by Coffee Addicted Writer, Book Beginnings of Fridays hosted by Rose City Reader, and the Friday 56 hosted by Freda's Voice.

This Week's Book Blogger Hop Question:
You're volunteering to read a book to a group of young children at the library.  What scary themed book for kids would you read them?

My Answer:
If we're talking preschool age and down I think I would pick The Spooky Wheels on the Bus by J. Elizabeth Mills.  Any book you can sing is always a hit with the younger crowd and I've sung this one about a million times.  Another good choice would be Pete the Cat: Five Little Pumpkins by James Dean because who doesn't love Pete the Cat?  Both of these would be a hit with my 5 year old!

I'm really excited about this week's book.  I've been wanting to try a book by Charles Todd for ages and even have the first of the Bess Crawford series sitting on my shelf.  So when the newest Inspector Rutledge book, A Fine Summer's Day, showed up on a blog tour list I jumped at the chance to read it and I have not been disappointed.  I'm about 3/4 finished (which is good because the review will be up Monday!) and loving it.

The Beginning:
Sunday, 28 June, 1914
It was a fine summer's day in England.
In fact, one of a string of bright days, languid and unhurried, full of promise.

My Thoughts:
I can just picture the day and see couples strolling through a garden enjoying the beautiful weather.  It does make me feel like there is danger in the distance to muck up all this perfection.

The 56:
There was someone in the nave.  Rutledge had seen the flash of a white shirt before the man moved out of sight behind a portion of the wall that had once been part of the north transept.

My Thoughts:
Someone is up to to know good and nave is a word that isn't used often enough.  I do love a good ruin!

What do you think?  Keep reading?

  11. I love the description in the opening - languid and unhurried. But I'm guessing something happens to disturb the calm.
My Friday post features Beneath Montana’s Sky.

  13. If the kids were really young and didn't want to sit through a long story, I would definitely choose Scary Scary Halloween by Eve Bunting. She wrote and illustrated it, I believe. My kids' hands-down favorite book, and my son kept checking it out even in Summer :) I think I might still know the prose by heart.
    Have a great weekend.

  18. I love your Halloween book choices! I will have to get Mouse a copy of The Spooky Wheels on the Bus. I bet she'd love it. :-) She'd probably like the Pete the Cat book too. She's recently "discovered" him.

I've only read one Charles Todd book and loved it. I want to go back and read the rest of the series. I am glad you enjoyed A Fine Summer's Day.
