Life with Leukemia (And Some Reading) - August 15

It's Sunday Post time!  This is hosted by the awesome Caffeinated Book Reviewer and gives us all a chance to recap our week.

What I Got:

Be My Ghost by Carol J. Perry - I love Carol J. Perry and I was trying so hard to resist picking up this first book in a new series but my willpower was only so strong and I ended up getting it.  (Publisher)

Miss Moriarty, I Presume by Sherry Thomas - This is a series that I really enjoy and the premise of this one looks really good!  (Publisher)

Currently:

Reading:  The Secret Staircase by Sheila Connolly and The Case of William Smith by Patricia Wentworth

Listening:  The Devil in the White City by Erik Larson

Our week started off in the best possible way!  We got to visit the therapy dogs when they were doing their photo shoot for a calendar at the Space and Rocket Center.  Having a connection there is quite helpful!  Both dogs were there and Orbit who is the more reserved of the two and the one we normally see was so happy to see Will.  He ignored the rest of the people in the rest of the room and came and sat with Will.

We got some kind of bad news at clinic.  Will's test results are mostly good but he can't keep his weight up.  Food was never a big priority for him pre-Leukemia but throw in all the taste bud changes thanks to chemo plus nausea and he's lost quite a bit of weight and none of the appetite stimulants seem to be working.  We are doing a bit of a Hail Mary this week with a different combination but it looks like he's going to have to have a feeding tube.  It'll be a temporary one through the nose but it's still not the best news.  Other then that it was a good week.  We started school and he's been doing well at home and he went to the in person physics class and did so well!  He's fascinated by the topic which helps and it's so good for him to be in a situation that doesn't involve me or someone medical.

My reading has slowed down this week as I've been so tired lately but I have started getting back into the habit of getting some exercise.  So far I'm alternating yoga and YouTube workouts and keeping it relatively short but when it cools down I'm hoping to get outside more.

Have a great week and happy reading!

  1. That is so cool! I bet Will loved hanging with Orbit. :)

I'm sorry to hear about the feeding tube, but hoping it's very temporary. Will pray for you guys as always. Hang in there!

I need to work out more too, I've been so lazy this summer!

  2. I remember being really really sick as a kid and not really being able to eat either. Constantly throwing up your food tends to make you scared of it. I'm hoping that the feeding tube works well for him, and doctors are able to get him feeling better soon. :)

  3. Good on Orbit, loved that, was a good choice by Orbit. Ah must be so hard about getting some weight on Will with all the medical interventions going on. I did get Be My Guest a while back seen as it was the start of a new series, so we shall see! Nice to get a little exercise in, take care - your health is important.

  4. Poor Will, hopefully the Hail Mary will work and a different solution will present itself! But I'm glad he had such a great time with Orbit and that the physics classes are a hit! 'Be My Ghost' looks lovely so no wonder you couldn't resist. I hope you all have a lovely week :)

  5. So sorry Will is struggling with eating and will need a tube for a while. But at least I think that the tube in the nose feels less invasive than other ways of helping him keep / gain weight.
It's great that he could go to school in person for his physics class! I'm sure getting out of the house and do 'normal stuff' does wonders for him.
Sending good vibes to Will and all of you.

  6. That is an adorable picture but, I am sorry Will is struggling with food issues. Too bad a cool tasty milkshake doesn't appeal to him in the hot weather. Hopefully, his appetite will return. Hope your books and yoga bring you some relaxation Katherine.

  9. The feeding tube definitely stinks, but if he isn't able to eat even when on steroids, then obviously it's necessary for now. :-( I'm glad he got to spend time with the dogs and enjoy the normalcy of school. Be My Guest, I love the cover! I hope you have a good week!

  13. Your story about Orbit and Will made me teary! I bet that made him feel pretty cool. :)

I am sorry to hear that about the feeding tube! Wyatt had one for a while, he actually was failure to thrive for years and not because we weren't feeding him lol. He just could not put on the weight. It was hard to get through, no one wanted it, but we kept saying this is a tool like any other, to get to where we want to be, healthy and strong. But I know how sometimes these things can feel. Better moments are ahead.

You have been reading some great sounding books lately!

  16. How sweet that Orbit gave Will such special attention. Prayers that the feeding tube gets results quickly.
Yay for getting the Sherry Thomas book. Hope we both love it.

  17. This is my first visit to your blog! How could I resist with your blog name - I Wish I Lived in a Library? So do I! Several of your books ended up on my TBR list.
I'm so sorry to hear about Will's weight loss. Going through treatment is rough for all concerned. I learned at a cancer conference from those who've been patients as well as caregivers that it is harder on the caregivers than the patient. Glad to hear you're exercising.
Aren't dogs the best? Orbit looks and sounds like a very wise friend.
    Blessings to you all!

  18. I love that Orbit only wanted to chill with Will. 🤗

We almost had to go the NG tube route with Baz, but just the thought of going to school with one as a teenager motivated him to choke down the high caloric shakes he had. I'm sorry Will's appetite has been so low, but at least with a feeding tube you'll know he's getting what he needs. (((((((HUGS)))))))

I hope your week starts to pick up. ❤

  19. I hope the feeding tube isn't necessary for long and its placement is painless and not uncomfortable for Will.
