Friday Fives - Five Classics I Didn't Read in School But Want to Read Now

I'm taking a bit of a break from my usual Friday Linkups to try something a little different.  I'm in a list making kind of mood so I thought I'd start making random five lists.  Sometimes they'll be bookish other weeks not so much.  I actually read a pretty decent number of classics in high school and for some reason required reading never really bothered me too much so there were quite a few I really enjoyed (and quite a few I really hated - I'm looking at you Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man).  In college I was a computer science major and only had to take a bare minimum of Literature classes so I didn't really add to that list then.   Here are 5 classics I never read in school but are on my list of books I want to read now.

1.  Persuasion by Jane Austen - I'm slowly working my way through Austen's books and this is next on my list.

2.  The Count of Monte Cristo by Alexandre Dumas - This is one of my dad's favorite books but somehow I have never read it.

3.  The Turn of the Screw by Henry James - I'm thinking of getting this one on audio.  It seems like it would be a good listen.

4.  The Moonstone by Wilkie Collins - I loved The Woman in White so of course I need to read this one.

5.  The Picture of Dorian Gray by Oscar Wilde - This one is on my desk and I'm planning on reading it in either September and October.

Have you read any of these?  What classics have you not read but want to read?

  1. None of these were school reads, but I have actually read them all! Most of them as audiobooks. The Librivox recordings of the Classics are quite good and it's for free!

The Turn of the Screw and Dorian Gray is really good!!!

Have a good weekend and take care.

  2. I read Persuasion a few years ago for my first run at Austen in August. I've deeply enjoyed (almost) every classic I've read over the past few years. The more time I've spent reading a classic, the more I've enjoyed it. I'm slowly (a chapter a day) reading David Copperfield now.

I would love to read Count of Monte Cristo.

  3. I was an English major, so I read A LOT of classics in college, some awesome, some not. My favorite class was about young adult literature, which was hardly a thing back then, but we read some fun books like LITTLE WOMEN and A TREE GROWS IN BROOKLYN. I remember reading THE MOONSTONE in college and enjoying it. I'll be interested to see what you think of all these.

  4. Never heard of the last three. I don't think I read any classics in high school. It was more like Catcher in the Rye and that rabbit society one. I do faintly remember Robin Hood and the Three Muskateers.

  5. I have not been drawn to classics and yes I hated Portrait of a Young Man too back in the day. I have read Persuasion and started Emma but not finished it. One of the pod casters on Currently Reading totally raves about The Count of Monte Cristo so that must be good as I respect her.

  7. I have not read The Moonstone. I remember Jay Leno mentioning once that it was his favorite book. 📗

In high school I hated The Red Badge of Courage, Moby Dick, and The Old Man and the Sea. Everything else I loved. I had to read The Old Man and the Sea twice more for college classes. It was the bane of my existence. 🙄
