This Week in Reading - March 3

It's Sunday Post time!  This is hosted by the awesome Caffeinated Book Reviewer and gives us all a chance to recap our week.

What I Got:

Alice and Gerald: A Homicidal Love Story by Ron Franscell - This is a bit of a different genre for me.  While I read lots of fictional crime I don't think I've ever read a true crime book and this one sounds interesting.  (Publicist)

Currently:

Reading: Between the Lies by Michelle Adams and Broken Bone China by Laura Childs

Listening: I'm finishing up Hidden Riches by Nora Roberts and am about to start Dead Wake by Erik Larson

Watching:  I'm staying away from crime for a bit and have been watching The Voice, World of Dance and Top Chef.

Off the Blog:

Not much has gone on this week.  The Tornado stayed home from school Friday with a severe sore throat.  Apparently there were several kids in his class that had strep throat and with that and all the other junk that's going around the school we went on and took him to the doctor.  Luckily he tested negative to strep and the doctor said he just has the crud and prescribed fluids and rest.  The fluid part is pretty easy but he does not like the rest part.  Basically he tries to go about his activities and then comes unglued when he doesn't feel well.  Then I talk him into resting for a bit and then he has a little more energy and we repeat the whole cycle.  I spend about 90% of my time reminding him to lie down.  He's not a great patient.

I've been struggling with anxiety the last few weeks and couldn't figure out what was the trigger.  I had some issues around Thanksgiving but that made sense with all the stuff that needed to be done and being really sick and trying to push through but right now literally nothing is going on.  Finally I realized that it was my TV watching habits!  I like to have the TV on during the day and it's been on true crime for probably the last month.  I switched to non-murdery entertainment, upped my yoga, and am working harder to destress before bed and that tight feeling is starting to relax.  I would never have realized how much all that background noise would have affected me!

  1. Your books look so good! I haven't read True Crime in a while, but I think it's time. Although maybe not, since what I read and watch can affect my sleep.

    Enjoy your week.

  2. Anxiety can be hard to pinpoint sometimes, glad you were able to narrow it down. And I do think true crime and stuff like that can be disturbing after a while- we watch it sometimes too and then I'm creeped out after sometimes! Hope you feel better .

Sorry to hear the Tornado is sick. Hope he feels better soon too! And looking forward to your British mystery recs this week.

  3. Anxiety is tough and getting to the root is good when you can. Interesting what the sub conscious picks up going on in the background. Take care, yeah turn the crime off TV!

  4. "A Homicidal Love Story" - That's an awesome tagline! Especially when it's not tongue in cheek! I like the odd true crime story. The mindset of those people is just so alien... But it's freaky how normal they can appear!

  6. If I watch Game of Thrones before I go to my bed I can't sleep because I'm so wound up! It's the same with tense apocalypse books! I need to unwind for 30 minutes before bed in these cases!

  9. I always get the feeling like I have something to do and I am forgetting something. It happens so often and makes my anxiety take off. That one is one that I have a hard time controlling. Background music will help and making a list of what I need to do. Sending you HUGS! Anxiety is no fun.

Kids don't know how to rest anymore. I remember being sick and in bed all day but my kids, I could never get them to stop especially if it was just like a little cold that they just didn't feel right.

I hope this week is amazing for you Katherine! Happy Reading! xx

  10. I'm glad your son doesn't have strep... sure hope he feels better soon. I had to chuckle about the true crime in the background fueling your anxiety. News seems to have that effect on me! ;-)
Hope the week ahead is a good one!

  11. Ahhh yeah the murdery ones can get to you for sure. Glad you were able to spot the issue!

  12. I'm sorry you've been struggling with anxiety! That's definitely hard. I'm glad it's getting better though.
I hope your kid feels better soon too. ;)
Have a great week and happy reading.

  13. Poor Tornado! It's hard being sick when you're an active kid. I hope they did a strep culture as well as the rapid strep test, since the rapid test sometimes gives false negatives. And mostly, I hope he's feeling better soon!

Anxiety is no fun, and what plays in the background can definitely affect you mentally and emotionally. I'm glad you've figured out what was triggering it and are starting to de-stress.

Now I'm off to check out your reviews of the Inn Boonsboro trilogy (which I liked a lot) and the Lilac Bus (because the title really intrigues me.) Have a great week!

  14. I hope everyone gets and stays healthy at your house, and that your yoga and calmer environment keeps the anxiety at bay. 💜

    Have a wonderful week. 🌞

  15. Sorry to hear that your son hasn't been feeling well. Little ones don't always make the best patients. Glad you figured out what was behind your anxiety. I wouldn't have thought that background noise would have such an impact but it does make sense. I hope you have a great week!

  16. Sorry that your son is not well. We have been fighting a cold bout here as well. I have been conscious about my TV habits as well. I hope your week is better!

  17. I'm so glad you were able to pinpoint your anxiety triggers. Mine are always a stupid combination of life stress (the kind I can't do anything about) and my brain just being a jerk. Taking long walks is the best help for my anxiety and mental health in general...but as it's STILL below zero here, I'm not able to walk yet. Big plans for when it's warmer, though.

Best wishes for your son's speedy recovery. My daughter makes an absolutely terrible patient as well. Last year, she had the pukes and was STILL up and running around all over the place (I truly hope that she listens a little better as she grows older, because she almost never does right now, and I've told my husband if this continues, I'm moving out before she becomes a teenager!). It's frustrating when you so want them to feel better, but they're conspiring against you!

  18. I hope the Tornado is feeling better! I'm glad you were able to pinpoint your anxiety triggers. That is something I really need to work on.

I'm definitely going to look up Alice & Gerald at my library. That definitely sounds like something I'd love.

I hope you have a wonderful week!

  19. I almost never watch tv as I listen to audiobooks if it is something I can do at the same time like chores or knitting or sewing. But I need to up my yoga / activity to reduce the stress and stiffness I feel. It's just hard when it is rainy and cold all the time lately. I need sun. At least we have books. I hope Tornado feels better now. Have a good week! Anne - Books of My Heart

  20. I hope you and Tornado feel better soon. I used to watch a lot of true crime, but I’ve gotten out of the habit in the past few years. I hope you have a good week!

  23. So much icky stuff is going around right now where I live. It seems like everybody is sick with lingering coughs, sore throats, lethargy, body aches, etc. I hope your little one is feeling better!

Sorry about the anxiety. Nightmares are part of the reason I stopped watching crime shows. I still read too much crime fiction, which is why I've been turning to cozies instead ... I can get my fix without all the anxiety and nightmares!

  24. That's pretty great that you were able to pin down what was the culprit, and changed things up. Very interesting about noise in the background and how it can affect us. Sending some hugs your way! RO
