My Reading Habits

I was digging through my saved posts on Bloglovin' and discovered this Reading Habits Tag that Tina over at Novel Meals had done way back in 2015.  I do love a good tag and this one seems like a lot of fun so I decided it was time to give it a try!

Do you have a certain place at home for reading?

Not really.  I do most of my reading in bed though I do love a long bath with a good book.  In theory I'd love to have a comfy reading chair but I tend to do most of my reading late at night.

Bookmark or random piece of paper?

I have two bookmarks that I always use - 1 Emma made when she was in kindergarten (she'll be 21 this month) and the other the Tornado made last year.  As well, I have a handful of freebies from authors and a set of magnetic bookmarks.

Can you just stop reading or do you have to stop after a chapter/a certain amount of pages?

I prefer to stop at the end of a chapter and to get at least 100 pages in but that doesn't always happen.

Do you eat or drink while reading?

I try not to eat because I tend to not pay attention to what I'm eating while reading and before I know it the entire plate of cookies or bag of chips is gone.  I normally have either my favorite water cup or my favorite mug filled with some kind of herbal tea nearby.

Reading at home or everywhere?

Mostly at home though I do read most days in carline while I'm waiting to pick up the Tornado.  I try to read in waiting rooms and anywhere possible but I have mixed results.

Reading out loud or silently in your head?

Unless I'm reading a bedtime story to the Tornado I read silently.

Do you read ahead or even skip pages?

Usually not though if I'm reading a thriller and there's an animal or small child that seems vulnerable I have been known to peek at the end to make sure they survive.

Breaking the spine or keeping it like new?

In between.  I'm not vigilant about keeping my books like new but I also try to take care of my books.

Do you write in your books?
No never.  I wrote in a cookbook one time and it made me feel like I'd done something horribly wrong so if I need to make a note in a book I use a post-it note but that's usually only for cookbooks.

What are your reading habits?

  1. Oh it drives me nuts if I have to stop in the middle of a chapter ha ha. I always try to finish a chapter if I can. :) And I can't write in books either.

  2. I cannot write in books or add notes in Kindle and usually read mostly at home.

  3. I can totally stop in the middle of a chapter though I rather not. I mostly read at home but will read anywhere. I am not crazy about keeping my books super like new but I can't write in them either!!

  4. I mostly read in bed, too. I do most of my reading at night before I go to sleep. I also try to read 100 pages a day, but lately that hasn’t been happening.

Aj @ Read All The Things!

  5. I read anywhere and everywhere. Though I don't read on my phone. I enjoy being able to slip my Kindle in my purse and then have 'all the books'. I don't care about stopping in the middle of a chapter. And I don't turn down pages in print, try not to break spines, and do not write in books (though I have been known to write in a cookbook - things like 'yuck, never make this again!' - LOL!). I have a bookmark that my daughter cross-stitched for me a couple of years ago. I love it, but somehow it's too thick. Ha!

    1. Ha ha ha, Kay, I make that exception with cookbooks too! I have notes that literally say, "blech!" or "yum-yum!" :)

  6. Great post! We share many similar reading habits. I just wrote a post about "Reading Rituals" on my blog recently and it was interesting from the little Facebook poll I took how many people do in fact, have certain reading habits or rituals. I especially agree with you about writing in books--I can't even buy a used book if it's been written in, highlighted or underlined (shiver, shiver).

  7. Enjoyed your post and love the bookmarks your two children made, I can see these would be the top favourites when a bookmark is used. So precious.

  8. This is a really fun post! Sadly, I have a tendency to lose bookmarks all the time, and find them in other books.(lol) I'm super impressed that you held on to one for over 10+ years. I used to eat Cheetos or other snacks, but I'm trying to stick with apples, oranges and strawberries these days, but sometimes I do get tempted and go for chocolate.(lo) Hugs..RO

  9. Thank you! I'm always fascinated to discover how people read and approach books and you have nicely alleviated my nosiness!

  10. Fun tag! I love that you use the bookmark your 21 year old made for you along with the one your son made. I abuse my cookbooks. They are written in, spilled on, and just generally a mess.

  11. I prefer to finish a chapter before stopping, but that doesn't always work out.

I mostly read in my Kindle, though, and prefer curling up on the couch. Reading in bed leads to falling asleep and dropping my Kindle!

  12. I'd love a comfy chair for reading but just never found the right one so a bed reader here, too :)

  13. I don't know how I became accustomed to stopping in-between chapters because I used to bother me. Ha ha. I try not to eat while reading for the same reasons, but... XD

  14. I feel the same way about writing in books although I do make exception for cookbooks. That first time was tough but I had heard so many people talk about loving the notes their loved one had written by recipes in favorite cookbooks so I decided it might enhance the book. Also, I've come across so many recipes where I would like the recipe with just a little tweak or two so I do make those notes. But it still feels sort of criminal!
