This Week in Reading - December 31

It's Sunday Post time!  This is hosted by the awesome Caffeinated Book Reviewer and gives us all a chance to recap our week.

What I Got:

The Wife Between Us by Greer Hendricks - I haven't read many unreliable narrators lately so I was super excited when I won this in a giveaway.  It sounds intriguing and I'm looking forward to it.  (Giveaway Win)

Making the Monster? The Science Behind Mary Shelley's Frankenstein by Kathryn Harkup - I loved her previous book A is for Arsenic about the poisons that Agatha Christie used in her books so much that I bought a copy in hardcover.  I'm super excited to see her take on the science behind Mary Shelley's Frankenstein.  (Publisher)

I have a few requests pending on NetGalley and a few more books that I know are on the way but they don't count until they're actually here.

Currently:

Reading:  Nothing!  I actually finished my last book for the year on Saturday and won't be starting another one until Monday morning.  I don't like to have books carry over.

Listening:  Podcasts for now.  I'm finishing my last one for the year - an overview of Bachelor contestants on The Popcast and then I'll be taking a break.  I'll start my first audio book of the year tomorrow.

Watching:  I've been catching up on The Librarians these past few days and J and I watched Mrs. Miniver with Greer Garson the other day.  It's absolutely wonderful.  I've also been doing a "best of" Doctor Who Christmas specials.  This year's was a little underwhelming though not my least favorite.  I'm also trying to find a kid friendly movie for tonight that we can all enjoy while we wait for the ball to drop.  Oh and a new season of Top Chef started so I've got to get caught up there as well.

Off the Blog:

This has been a big week with Christmas and the Tornado's birthday and now New Year's.  I've been staying up late trying to get the last few books finished so now I'm just ready for a nap!  Luckily my plans for today are essentially just laziness.  We are going to take the Tornado to an arcade kind of place tonight for New Year's Eve and then are heading home to watch a movie and watch the ball drop.  It's hard to believe that it'll be 2018 tomorrow!  It still doesn't seem like a real year.  I remember how hard it was to get used to saying 2000 instead of 19 whatever.

Despite the fact that it sounds like science fiction I do love a new year!  It always makes me want to start some kind of project or hatch a plan of some sort.  This year after some reading and thinking I'm going to do a No Spend 2018 from January 1st until my birthday in May.  I read an interview where Ann Patchett talked about one and her basic rule was she could only buy stuff from the grocery store and I'm pretty much sticking with that.  Wish me luck!

I wish everyone a safe and happy New Year!

  3. It is hard to believe it's almost 2018! Where did 2017 go? Our plans for the New Year are very similar- stay in watch a move and just relax. It'll be nice after a lot of traveling over Christmas.

Hope you have a great New Years! :)

  5. Your new books all look great, Katherine. I love the sound of Making the Monster. I have a feeling we will be watching movies up until the ball dropping at our house too. I am planning to send everyone to bed right after 9 p.m. tomorrow after the ball drops on the East Coast, but considering everyone's still up now at 11:10, I am wondering if we might now all make it to midnight tomorrow after all . . .

Happy Birthday to Tornado! I could really use a no spend rule. I have been spending like crazy as of late, and I really don't know why. Even beyond Christmas presents. Therapy maybe? It needs to stop though. I'm usually much more practical minded.

I hope you have a Happy New Year, Katherine! Happy Reading!

  10. I love setting goals for a new year. I've been reading about how to do that effectively, and most people say to stick to one goal at a time. So I'm aiming to write for fifteen minutes a day next year. I hope I will be successful!

  11. I think that I could do a no spend year. Not so sure about my family though. We really don't spend a lot of money. I do buy books but I only use gift cards that I have earned. If I don't have a gift card balance, then I don't buy anything. I hope you enjoy your New Years Eve plans. Happy Birthday to your son! Happy New Year!

  12. I hope you enjoy The Wife Between Us as much as I did.

Sounds like you've had a busy time...my youngest grandson has a birthday on Jan. 5, so he always feels short-changed on the holidays...but we try to make both events wonderful for him. He'll be 15!

Thanks for visiting my blog, and Happy New Year! I can't believe it has been 17 years since we all waited to see what Y2K would bring.

  13. A lot of readers have liked The Wife Between Us, its popular. Happy New Year. It's Monday morning here and my new year has begun, I like the feel of a fresh start too, I love taking last year's calendar off the wall and putting up the new one.

  16. Not reading too - for the same reason. Gotta start fresh in the new year. Happy reading!

  17. Good luck with the No Spend! I like the idea in theory but not sure I could put it into practice so I'm looking forward to hearing about your experience! Happy New Year!

  18. The Frankenstein book sounds fascinating, and your No Spend plan sounds daunting! I don't think I could do it, to be honest. Not that I spend that much in stores, but I do seem to buy a lot of Kindle books LOL!

Happy birthday to the Tornado, and Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to you and your family. I hope you have a spectacular 2018!

  19. I typically start the new year with a fresh book also, however this year I have switched that up. I hope your first book of the year proves to be a good one!

Also, I recently read that Ann Patchett interview too and found it to be quite inspiring - with all the end of year spending I've been doing I could do with implementing something like that! Good luck with that challenge of yours.

A happy new year from our family to yours, Katherine!

  20. This year's Doctor Who Christmas Special wasn't my favorite, either, although I didn't hate it. I felt like a chunk got cut somewhere, because I felt like it suddenly jumped around. I am excited for the next season, though.

  21. I have three books that will carry over; that's what happens when one has diverse interests every which way. That The Librarians show looks good; I'll see if I can find it on Netflix or Amazon.

  22. Good luck with your no spending spree! I am re-investing in my bullet journal with some MUCH needed organization and adding some stencils and then I'm going to town with my creativity. I'll call it an early birthday present. :) I hope you had a great NYE and NY day!

  23. Good luck with your no spend! I'm doing a greatly reduced spending. I really only shop the grocery store which is super cheap with couponing and Walmart locally. lol Online, though. Yikes! Hope yall are having a great 2018 so far!
