My Cookbook Wishlist

The temperatures and humidity are starting to drop and the air no longer feels quite like it's pressing down on you here and I'm finding my interest in cooking is starting to wake up.  I'm pretty sure it hibernates once the weather gets above 95.  Cooking dinner every night becomes a chore and I find myself dragging into the kitchen with little enthusiasm and no real urge to try anything new.   But all of a sudden I find myself really wanting to make bread and to finally tackle making candy so I'm guessing the cooking slump is over!  Perfect timing too as there are SO many great cookbooks that have come out recently or are coming out in the near future.

If I was to go on a cookbook shopping spree here are the first ten I would grab:

1.  Brunch at Bobby's: 140 Recipes for the Best Part of the Weekend by Bobby Flay - I love Bobby and became even more fond of him when I spent a month cooking from all his cookbooks.  Seriously good!  Like will never look at burgers the same way kind of good.  While I'm not a big brunch person we do have breakfast for dinner a pretty good bit and I think this could be pretty fun.

2.  The Pioneer Woman Cooks: Dinnertime: Comfort Classics, Freezer Food, and Other Delicious Ways to Solve Dinner by Ree Drummond - I always love Ree's recipes and while not all of them are amazing they're all good, reliable and relatively straight forward.

3.  The Chef Next Door: A Pro Chef's Recipes for Fun Fearless Home Cooking by Amanda Frietag  - I've seen Amanda in tons of cooking competitions both as a competitor and a judge and I always like seeing her.  She just seems like someone you'd want to be friends with and I really want to try some of her recipes.

4.  My Kitchen Year: 136 Recipes that Saved My Life by Ruth Reichl - I read her first book - Tender at the Bone - years ago and it was the first cooking memoir I really read and I absolutely loved it.  I'm looking forward to trying these recipes and really just looking through the book.

5.  Michael Symon's 5 in 5 for Every Season: 165 Quick Dishes, Sides, Holiday Dishes and More by Michael Symon 6- I have the original 5 in 5 and love it so I'm excited to see what new quick and fresh meal ideas Michael has come up with.

6.  Farmhouse Rules: Simple Seasonal Meals for the Whole Family by Nancy Fuller - I don't know too much about Nancy.  I've seen her show a time or two and I've seen her on other shows and always enjoy what she has to say.

7.  Simply Nigella: Feel Good Food by Nigella Lawson -  I love the feel of Nigella's books and her attitudes on food.  Everything's relatively simple but a little different without being TOO different.

8.  Duff Bakes: Think and Bake Like a Pro at Home by Duff Goldman - I loved Ace of Cakes and Duff always cracks me up.  I've tried a few of his mixes and have always gotten good results but I'd love to try his food from scratch.

9.  Sweets and Treats with Six Sisters Stuff: 100+ Desserts, Gift Ideas, and Traditions for the Whole Family by Six Sisters Stuff - This is one of my absolute favorite food blogs and I'd love to have some of their recipes in book form.

10. Sally's Candy Addictions: Tasty Truffles, Fudge and Treats for you Sweet Tooth Fix by Sally McKenney - This is another one of my favorite food blogs though I've never tried her candy recipes.  My goal is to get over my fear of the candy thermometer in time for Christmas treats and this book looks like a good way to start!

So what cookbooks are on your wishlist this fall?

  1. I am considering cooking again...LOL. Yes, I stopped doing anything other than quick dishes and microwave things for a while. But when I see recipes, I remember how much I once enjoyed it. Thanks for sharing...and for visiting my blog.

  3. What an awesome list! I have most of Nigella's books and a few Bobby Flay books but neither of the ones you mentioned. I have the Reichl book on audio -- I'll get to it in the next few weeks, I hope.

  5. Great list! Been seeing Bobby promoting his new brunch cookbook on several talk shows. I've yet to try any of his recipes so this might be a good place to start. I've never been disappointed with any of Ree's recipes so that book should go on my list too.

Another new one I'm anxious to see is Jacques Pepin's Heart and Soul in the Kitchen -- just started watching his new PBS series (this is the companion cookbook).

  6. Well I have no cook books on my wishlist. Lol. But I do like when someone cooks for me.
Looks like you would have a billion different dishes to make if these showed up at your door. I bet the family wouldn't complain about that.

    Happy reading!

  7. You must watch the food network :) I love all these people as well! And - I remember reading somewhere that Cooking Channel asked Bobby Flay to do an instructional show for them and he said the only way he'd do it was if it was brunch! So, I think that's one of this things.

  8. I hear you about cooking in the heat. I got a portable air conditioner and plonked it in my kitchen, aimed right at me. Helped a whole lot. On my list right now is Marcus Samuelsson's book on the cooking of Africa, The Soul of a New Cuisine.

  9. I get lots of cookbooks from the library. My favourite ones are Dorie Greenspan and Stephanie Alexander. I now keep recipes to try in electronic form either through scanning or pinning. Cheers from Carole's Chatter!

  10. I like Bobby Flay from what I've seen of him. I've read one of Pioneer Woman's books and you turned me on to Six Sisters Stuff. Ruth Reichl looks like a great cookbook author too! I don't watch Food Network that much (my daughter and son-in-law do, and favor Giada de Laurentis and the Barefoot Contessa, among others). I find out good recipes from them because they use TV and internet instead of buying cookbooks to come up with new ideas. Thanks for sharing these-- I'm bookmarking a few that might fit our lifestyle.

And oh yes, I lose my interest in cooking when hot weather comes! Yuck, between the hot kitchen-- even with A/C on-- and the loss of appetite everyone has and more lethargy, I make simple dishes. Come November I am eager to try out different recipes or traditional comfort foods, though we don't have family out here so it's either 3 of us or 4, if son is home.

  15. Oooo... I would love Duff's cookbook. I got to meet him in NYC at a music thing. He is even funnier in person. I wish it had been a food festival instead and he had been baking, lol. Thanks to you I have three of Beard's cookbooks because I ran and got them on Netgally. I would love both volumes of Julia Child's Mastering the Art of French Cooking. We have a semi famous vegetarian restaurant in a near-by city called Moosewood and I would love all 13 of their cookbooks. Great list. I used to watch Nigella faithfully and I also frequent the Six Sisters blog. :)

  16. Oh wow now that's a great cookbook lineup. I love the Six Sisters blog too and have pinned many of their recipes. Love Nigella and I like the sound of Farmhouse Rules even though I haven't heard of Nancy Fuller.
