A Look Back at 2020 Reading

I think I can safely say that 2020 did not go like anyone expected.  For us there was an unexpected diagnosis for our son and an very unexpected move so that he could undergo treatment for Leukemia in Memphis.  Then the move back right before Christmas.  There were a few small reading slumps but for the most part reading was one of my constants this year and I surpassed my goal and significantly increased my reading from 2019.

Book Total:  172

Most Read Genre: Cozy Mysteries at 74 which isn't a shock

Least Read Genre: Nonfiction at 5.  Honestly I'm a bit surprised I read this many.

Breakdown:

Audio: 41

Classic Mysteries: 21

Rereads:  23

Romantic Suspense: 7

Romance: 14

Middle Grade: 11

Historical Mystery: 18

Fiction: 13

Mystery: 8

Challenges:

I did 2 personal challenges this year.  One was trying to read a book with a title from every letter in the alphabet and the other was to see how many states I could "visit".

Alphabet Goal:  Completed!  I had 2 small cheats;  For J I used Darkest Journey and for X I used The Unexpected Mrs. Polifax.  No words start with "x" but it has 2 in the title so I'm saying it counts!

Armchair Traveling:  I went to 47 states.  I didn't visit North Dakota, Delaware, or Nebraska but I managed the rest.  My most traveled to states were California (11) and Massachusetts (7).  I visited Maine, Connecticut and New York 5 times.

I went to England 39 times though very rarely was it present day England.  I also visited Ireland, Albania, Canada, Norway, Egypt, Scotland, France, Russia, Singapore, Turkey, Italy and Greece.

How was your 2020 reading?

  1. Yay to 172 books this year and to completing a few challenges. There's no way I can complete any challenges, but hopefully that will change in 2022, at least.(lol) I wish I could be that organized. Happy New Year to you and your family! Hugs, RO

  2. I am really hoping 2021 will be better for all of us, but especially for your family. You've all been through so much. It sounds like you had a good reading year, at least. Here's to a much better New Year!

  3. That's awesome. Love your personal challenges, I think most challenges allow X anywhere in the title! I will be having more cozy mysteries in my total in 2021.

  4. That's an impressive total, Katherine! I'm impressed you read 5 non-fiction books, too, given how much escapist reading must have been your mainstay. I think you did excellently with your personal challenges and your armchair travelling was nicely widespread, too. I very much hope the coming year is a far easier one, particularly for you and your family. And let's hope the lovely books that we've been treated to during this difficult year keep on coming!

  5. You had a great reading year, especially considering all the personal turmoil you went through. Nice job! California, New York, and North Carolina tied for my most traveled to states (11 books each) and England was also my most traveled to country outside the U.S.

    Happy New Year!

  6. You did great despite the year you had! I don't think I have ever wrote down where my books are set but I can pretty much guarantee I didn't travel much...lol. Probably mostly England and US.

  7. You had a great year of reading. I am in awe that you were able to read as much as you did with everything going on in your life.

  8. I had a poor reading year by my own standards-lots of short books like cartoon strips, novellas and kids books but it was better than nothing. You did a great job for reading this year with everything you had to deal with. Good luck for this year!

  10. Looks like a good year for reading. I read way over my goal but I'm a stress reader. I read for fun but I ramp up my reading when I'm stressed or unhappy. I only did a few challenges and did so-so with them. Here's to a great reading year for both of us!
