This week's book is Meet Me in Atlantis: My Quest to Find the 2,500 Year Old Sunken City by Mark Adams. I picked this up when I went to Parnassus in Nashville and it was featured as a staff pick. That was two years ago...
Description: A few years ago, Mark Adams made a strange discovery: Everything we know about the lost city of Atlantis comes from the work of one man, the Greek philosopher Plato. Then he made a second, stranger discovery: Amateur explorers are still actively searching for this sunken city all around the world, based entirely on the clues Plato left behind.
Exposed to the Atlantis obsession, Adams decides to track down these people and determine why they believe it’s possible to find the world’s most famous lost city and whether any of their theories could prove or disprove its existence. He visits scientists who use cutting-edge technology to find legendary civilizations once thought to be fictional. He examines the numerical and musical codes hidden in Plato’s writings, and with the help of some charismatic sleuths traces their roots back to Pythagoras, the sixth-century BC mathematician. He learns how ancient societies transmitted accounts of cataclysmic events—and how one might dig out the “kernel of truth” in Plato’s original tale.
What books are gathering dust on your shelves?
There are too many that have been waiting for me that I got back in 2010!
ReplyDeleteFun topic! I went through a serious minimalism phase a few years ago and donated about 75% of my books(!). After things had a chance to "settle" I realized that missed having a TBR shelf. So now I've created one-but I only like to have about 20ish books on it at one time. I like borrowing books from the library too (and still do this) but sometimes it's nice to not have worry about how long it takes me to read something. Plus, it makes me smile looking at all those books just waiting for me. :) One that has been on my shelf too long is "Rebecca," by Daphne DuMaurier. I know I'm going to enjoy it, but need to be in the right frame of mind to delve in.
ReplyDeleteOh, yes... I can see why you grabbed this one. :)
ReplyDeleteThis sounds pretty interesting. Don't ask what's gathering dust Katherine! (lol) And I just picked up 6 more books from the library. Hugs...RO
ReplyDeleteThe cover of this one is enough to make me want to pick it up. I hope you get the chance to read this one soon, Katherine :) Thanks for joining in!
ReplyDeleteSounds like an interesting book.
ReplyDeleteI have Night Circus, hardcover that I bought on release day.
ReplyDeleteI didn’t realize Plato was the only one to speak of Altantis. Sounds like an interesting book. And people are still searching. Wow! I did a keep it or skip post for a while as I tried to skinny down my TBR list.
ReplyDeleteI've always been fascinated by Atlantis, so I can see picking this one up too. :)
ReplyDeleteI am happy to announce that I cleared out TWO sitting on my Kindle: The Darkest Minds, and The Witches of New York. Ruin and Rising has been sitting on my shelf for forever, but I think I'll borrow a library ebook because I really hate reading physical books now. Ugh, that sounds awful but it's true. 😏
ReplyDeleteI had no idea all of the Atlantis accounts came from Plato. Very interesting! Now I want to read that book. Ha ha. 📚
