This Week in Reading - December 3

It's Sunday Post time!  This is hosted by the awesome Caffeinated Book Reviewer and gives us all a chance to recap our week.

What I Got:

Sisters Like Us by Susan Mallery - I've been wanting to read Susan Mallery's stand alone books for quite some time so when I was offered this one I couldn't resist.   I love the beachy cover!  (Blog Tour)

Every Dog Has His Day by Jenn McKinlay - I'm a huge Jenn McKinlay fan and I've been really wanting to try her romances.  Plus I love a romance that involves animals - especially dogs so I'm super excited to see what I think of this one.  (Publisher)

I was torn between wanting another book free week (my 3rd in a row) and going on a book buying binge.  I think just getting two is nice and reasonable!

Currently:

Reading: No Place Like You be Emma Douglas and Comic Sans Murder by Paige Shelton

Listening:  I'm listening to From Russia with Love by Ian Fleming though I did take a short break and listened to Jenny Lawson's Let's Pretend This Never Happened which I think I liked even more in audio than I did in print.

Watching:  J and I have been watching some Hallmark Christmas movies.  He's a pretty good sport about watching them and we have a good time predicting how they're going to end.

Off the Blog:

So I signed up for Audible.  Typically I've gotten my audio books from my library's digital site and it works great.  It's convenient because I can download it directly to my phone, the selection is decent and it's free.  BUT they don't have absolutely everything and I need another medium where I can be woefully behind.  So what are your must listen to audios and your favorite narrators?  I need some suggestions to make my wishlist absurdly enormous.

We are hopefully finishing up the bulk of our Christmas shopping today.  If we do get the bulk of it done I'll be more ahead than I think I've ever been though I'm sure there will be something forgotten that involves a panicked sprint to the store December 24.  I've got some volunteering at the Tornado's school this week which is always entertaining.  I'm also heading out of town in the middle of the week for a pre-Christmas visit to my Grandparents.  I'm looking forward to the Tornado's Christmas break so I can sleep!  My allergies have suddenly flared up which is weird as I would have thought everything was dead but they're making me super sleepy and that alarm in the morning is not my friend.

On the Blog:

  1. Nice that you guys are watching the Hallmark movies together. :) We've watched a few cheesy Christmas movies in the last week and they are fun to gently make fun of, even as some of them aren't *gasp* too bad. Well, maybe.

From Russia With Love is one of my favorite Bond movies so as usual I'm curious how the book turns out!

  2. I've been getting allergy symptoms too! Mainly just the stuffed up and runny nose. It's nice to hear that someone else is getting them too because I was really worried that I was getting a cold.

Enjoy your holiday movies, and have a good week! :)

  3. My little one is only 3 and I'm trying to find some Christmas type movies to watch as a family that she can also enjoy and get more into Christmas with. We watched a Netflix movie last weekend but she wasn't really interested when Santa didn't appear! 😂 I guess we need to go far more traditional kids movie.

Two books was some awesome restraint! I've been too busy for getting books so that's been handy at keeping my pile under control..... You know, as much as it can be when you're a book worm and a blogger!

Hope your allergies settle and you have a great week!

  4. I sneaked in some Hallmark movies this week too, I never get enough of Christmas movies! I cancelled my audible when I joined the library, as they are very good at adding new books on there. My favourites are all the Kate Morton books, the Harry Potter books, the Liane Moriarty books, and Tana French books. I find audiobooks great for re-reading.

  6. Just two new books is definitely reasonable. Especially for us book bloggers!
I can’t believe how behind I am at Christmas shopping. I only got one gift for my husband so far. I’m really terrible at this. I hope your Christmas shopping went well. 😉
    Happy reading!

  7. Sorry about the allergies flaring - and at the wrong time of year:(. I've been with Audible for my granddaughter for years and their token system makes it really good value. I'm so impressed you are so organised for Christmas - we need to get our shopping sorted out! Have a great week, Katherine.

  8. Everyone tells me I should give audiobooks,s a try but the few I started listening to didn’t engage me. I know it’s all in the narration and reader because I love Jim Dale reading the Harry Potter books. I have o find some good suggestions for narrators and book combos and try it again.

Bummer about the allegories. You are on medication, right? Maybe your doctor can tweak the dosage. I use Claritin as needed.

  9. Oh, I'm always contemplating Audible. Maybe after I retire?

  10. Oh I love Jenny Lawson books on audio! I signed back up for audible earlier this year when they had a good sale. I agree there are just some things the library doesn't have!! Hope your allergies behave and you have a great week!

  11. I have watched so many Christmas movies over the years that I can pretty much guess exactly what is going to happen and how it ends as if I wrote them myself...lol. I still watch them though...mainly for my favorite adorable hallmark actors! :)

So audios hmmm, Molly Harper/Amanda Ronconi are a duo that is a must! You should try one of your Krewe of Hunters with Luke Daniels as the narrator! Almost any cozy is great too!

    Have a great week!

  13. I am loving the Hallmark Christmas movies more than ever this year. Maybe because the year seems to need these "feel good" movies. At any rate, I am loving them.

I haven't read Susan Mallery yet...but I'm drawn to her books more and more. Thanks for sharing.

Enjoy your week! Here are MY WEEKLY UPDATES

  15. I am looking forward to reading Every Dog Has His Day. It sounds like it will be fun. One of these days I'll give Susan Mallery a try. Sisters Like Us sounds good. My husband's been pretty good about the Hallmark movies too. :-)

I hope you enjoy shopping today. It'll be nice to have most of that Christmas shopping behind you. We have dance photos today--and I haven't practiced the hair and make-up at all. So, this will be interesting. I'm not a hair and make-up person and so I'm in a little bit of a panic about it. LOL Thank goodness for You-Tube, I guess. Have a great week, Katherine!

  16. So happy to see the Susan Mallery stand alone on your list, I prefer her ones that vere more towards women's fiction or mainstream fiction or whatever one likes to call it! I have been a long time member of Audible and wouldn't be without it. I think narrator preferences do vary from person to person. I always listen to the small excerpt first to get a feel. Joshilyn Jackson does great job of narrating her own books, although some authors should leave the narration to someone else! My sister liked John Chancer on The Mountain Between Us, I am not sure whether I'll listen to it. Rosalyn Landor for anything historical romance always does a great job.

    bwah ha ha!
I have loved all the Cassandra Campbell narrated books I've listened to. She's one of the few names I remember. Bronson Pinchot has had a couple of good reads too.

    1. Oh, and the Maggie Hope series by Susan Elia MacNeal is good on audio. It's the first series I've only ever listened to.

  18. Getting two is indeed reasonable. I have done the other option though. I got 20 books this month. Ouch!

Oh dang, I don't have anything for Christmas yet :/ I believe my case might be the run on the 24th xD

    Have a great week!

  19. I am always trying to have weeks where I don't bring any books into the house - and then it makes me crazy and I end up going to the library two times (like I did this week lol). I love the cover to Mallery's book as well. I hope you enjoy these!

  20. Good luck with getting your Christmas shopping done. Have a great week and enjoy your new books!

  21. My alarm has not been my friend this week, either. Monday and Tuesday were OK, but after that...UGH. This is the time when most people get colds and the flu and strep is going around the school. Also, most farmers are plowing the fields here, so that might also be what's happening in your area. Good luck on your trip!

  22. I loved Every Dog Has His Day by Jenn McKinlay and hope you do to. I swear each book in the series is a little better than the previous!

  23. I really enjoy Susan Mallery's books, and she's a good writer. I think I may have mentioned that I have a hard time listening to books because they make me sleepy.(lol) Kudos to you for being ahead of the game for all your shopping. Definitely the best way to avoid all those crowds. One of the reasons, I'm behind, in addition to taking on too many projects, has been definitely watching the Hallmark movies. They have 21 new ones this year, in addition to all the other classics they've been repeating. What's really cool this year, is that they're also doing a weekly sweepstakes tied to the movies to win cash. Hope you can get some rest soon, and feel better with those allergies. Hugs...RO

  24. Yay for Audible! I do use several sources for audiobooks but I really like Audible best. I have the Jenn McKinlay book coming up on my reading schedule soon. Congrats on being ahead with the shopping. I just can't get myself in the mood to get ready for the holiday at all. Have a great week!

  25. I haven't tried Audible. I have a really hard time with audiobooks. I tend to zone out.

I hope you got your Christmas shopping done!

  26. The snow you're getting at your grandparents is amazing, very picturesque. Yeah, my allergies have been acting up with these high winds going on.
