This Week in Reading - March 12

It's Sunday Post time!  This is hosted by the awesome Caffeinated Book Reviewer and gives us all a chance to recap our week.

What I Got:

All Signs Point to Murder by Connie di Marco - I enjoyed the first in this series last summer and am looking forward to this one!  This involves a wedding day and I'm guessing many hijinks will ensue.  (NetGalley)

Until You by Denise Grover Swank - I really loved the first book in this series and I love when a series is about 2 groups of friends who all end up together.  That way you can check in with earlier couples and it works with the book.  (NetGalley)

Hospitality and Homicide by Lynn Cahoon - I've really been enjoying this series by Cahoon and I'm super excited about this newest book.  She's started another cozy series recently which I also like but I'm constantly worried she's going to abandon this one.  (NetGalley)

Dying on the Vine by Marla Cooper - Apparently murders around weddings is my kryponite these days because I just couldn't resist this one!

Currently:

Reading: Forever a Hero by Linda Lael Miller, The Lake House by Kate Morton and The Grapes of Wrath by John Steinbeck

Listening: Diamonds are Forever by Ian Fleming

Watching:  Actually not a huge amount.  Major Crimes is back on TNT so J and I have been watching that.  I've been catching up on NCIS and all it's franchises.

Off the Blog:

Apparently this is spring forward weekend.  I'm not ready!  Sure daylight and all that is good but I need that extra hour of sleep!  Luckily it's occuring on what is Spring Break for us so I at least won't have to get up an hour early.

Speaking of spring break the Tornado and I are heading south to visit my grandparents.  My grandfather had a fall back in November and is still not feeling quite himself.  We're going to go and hopefully distract him and help my grandmother with a few things that need to doing.  This is the first time in his life he hasn't been able to be super active (he's 93) and all the sitting has him bored and stir crazy.  His eyes get tired if he reads a lot but he's just discovered audio books.  Any recommendations?  He was career Army and was a pilot in World War II and really enjoys books set around those.  He also listened to The Boys in the Boat and Seabiscuit and enjoyed those.  He also really enjoyed a book he read about Apollo 13 but I can't remember what it was.  Any suggestions - especially for really great audio books will be much appreciated!

Since I'll be out of town I won't be around too much this week but I hope everyone has a fantastic week and I'll be back to visit you soon!

  1. Enjoy your break and time with your grandparents.

Until You sounds like a good one...and so do the cozies.

I love Major Crimes...it fills in nicely for the defunct The Closer show that I loved and has been gone now for a couple of years.

I hate the time change too!

    Enjoy your books!

  3. I am not a fan of spring ahead! :) Have a great trip and best of luck to your grandfather. Hope you find some good audiobooks for him- I don't have a lot of luck with audio so I don't have any suggestions, but I'm sure you'll get some. And enjoy spring break!!

  5. I need to check when our clocks go forward, it's the same as for you guys I think (though we fall back differently). I hope you enjoy your break - I wish I could suggest some audiobooks but I just don't listen to them.

  6. Have a safe and fun trip! It is nice that your lost hour comes right at spring break. As to audiobooks, I'd take a look at Audible and check those titles that you mentioned. There are suggestions as to other books that might work or books that people have also listened to. Might be a good source for recommendations. Your grandfather is the same age as my Dad would be. Dad was Army too, in the Pacific for WWII.

  8. One that isn't audible, but a firm recommendation from Himself is 'Bring Back My Stringbag' from a Swordfish pilot and on audible 'Wings On My Sleeve' by Capt Eric Brown and as for fiction reads on audible - some of Douglas Reeman and Neville Shute. I hope that helps, at least... I hope you have a great stay with your grandparents, Katherine.

  9. Another recommendation... Derek Robinson 'Hallo Russia, Good-by England' on audible - Himself says he's a solidly good author...

  10. That is great your son likes audio books. Do you use a CD player? I was going to take your advice and get some for my granddaughter for her birthday but the book stores doesn't have that Dear Goofy one we talked about. Part of the issue is the delivery as we used to use a cassette player. No one uses those now, it seems to be all MP3. But I haven't given up!

  11. Oh, now look who is tempting with books this week...lol. :) I love the Lynn Cahoon series too, it's still my favorite of the two series. I have to wait for it to come on audio as that is how I like it. :)

Enjoy your break with your grandparents, I wish I had some recommendations but I know nothing about books in those areas...lol.

    Happy reading,

  12. I used to hate this time change but now I like it once I adjust. It helps that it isn't as dark in the evenings when I am done with work, especially when I work at night :)

I hope you have a safe trip and enjoy the time spent with your grandparents. I don't listen to much nonfiction though if he liked The Boys in the Boat and Seabiscuit he might enjoy Unbroken if he hasn't listened to it yet. Another lesser known work he might like is A Higher Call by Adam Makos. There is also an audio version of Band of Brothers. My brother in law loves that time period and though he didn't listn to the audio, he highly recommends the book. Although it is fiction, I wonder if he might like The Martian since it is about an astronaut?

  13. Oh, I got the new Connie diMarco book, too! And I've requested the new Lynn Cahoon but haven't heard back yet. Fingers crossed!

Have a safe trip, and I hope your Grandpa feels better soon! I haven't read it, but it's on my wishlist: The Perfect Horse is a book about the Allied rescue of a stockpile of white purebred horses, stolen by Hitler for breeding. It might appeal to your grandfather.

  14. By down South are you thinking North Carolina? Sure hope it's super fun. I totally agree about the Daylight Savings time. I get totally turned around for weeks! Happy Sunday to you. Hugs...

  15. Why can't we spring ahead that hour on a Saturday? Then we at least have two days to adjust! Have a good time at your grandparents again. Sorry your grandpa is restless. I'm sure you'll help him find good audiobooks to read.

  16. Enjoy your spring break! I'm jealous. Mine isn't until next month. At least you'll have time to adjust to Daylight Savings.

  17. I really liked Forever a Hero. I can't think of a rec for your grandfather right now but if I do I'll let you know!

  18. I hope the visit goes well! My grandfather fell a few years ago and it has been hell ever since. Audiobook SYNC will start up in May and they give away two free audiobooks each week all summer long! It's a mix of books, usually a classic paired with a modern. Last year there were a lot of nonfiction books, which aren't really my thing. I got X (not sure if he'd enjoy) and some others. I'll go through my list and see if there are any I got that match what he likes.

  19. Have a great trip!

I received All Signs Point to Murder too. I'm looking forward to reading it because I really liked the first book.

  20. All the best for the trip. What about The Martian for your grandfather? Fantastic on audio.

  21. I hope you have a nice visit with your grandfather. Maybe your grandfather would enjoy Unbroken. It is a WWII book by the same author as Seabiscuit. Have a great week!
