Friday Fives - Five Middle Grade Books on Our Read Aloud List

I'm taking a bit of a break from my usual Friday Linkups to try something a little different.  Michelle over at Because Reading is Better Than Real Life   used to do a Five on Fridays that I always enjoyed and I've seen a few other variations on the theme.  As well I'm in a list making kind of mood so I thought I'd give start making random five lists.  Sometimes they'll be bookish other weeks not so much.  Today I'm looking at 5 Read Aloud books that I have upcoming on my list.  Despite lots of trying and tempting my son just doesn't enjoy the act of reading BUT he does love listening to stories so I'm trying to cram in all the read alouds I can.

1.  The Saturdays by Elizabeth Enright - This is an old favorite of mine and I think he'll enjoy it and be fascinated by the level of freedom the kids have.

2.  Harry Potter and the Sorcer's Stone by JK Rowling - He's 10 so I think it's time to introduce him to Harry Potter.  I don't think he's ready for the later darker books but I think he'll enjoy thi sone.

3.  A Wrinkle in Time by Madeleine L'Engle - This one is a little dicey.  I loved it but I'm not entirely sure he will.  When I reread it as an adult I was surprised how much I loved it as a kid so you never know!

4.  Word of Mouse by James Patterson - I know just about nothing about this one (other then recognizing the names of the authors) but someone sent us this one and it looks fun.

5.  Greenglass House by Kate Milford - I read this one a few years ago and enjoyed the spooky but not too creepy vibe and I think he would enjoy this so this one is going on the list for closer to Christmas.

What are some of your favorite read alouds or middle grade books?

  1. I've read A Wrinkle in Time too late. You should read it when you are much younger. I hope your boy enjoys all the books you've picked for him. Happy reading!

  2. I hope your son enjoys them! I read Harry Potter for the first time when I was 12 and instantly became obsessed with it. I read A Wrinkle In Time as an adult and hated it. Maybe he’s at the perfect age to enjoy it.

Aj @ Read All The Things!

  3. My 11yo daughter is the same way. She loves graphic novels but doesn't want to read wordier books. She likes being read aloud to, though. Currently, my husband is reading her the HP series - neither has read it before. They just started the second book and they've both been enjoying the series. I read my own book while they read, but even though I'm only half-listening it's still been fun to hear the books again!

A WRINKLE IN TIME is a tough one. I loved it as a kid but didn't care for it when I re-read it as an adult. I'll be interested to see what your son thinks of it if you end up reading it to him.

  4. It's interesting regarding your son and loving to hear you read to him. My daughter was the same way and I read aloud to her for many years. Even when we homeschooled during her 7th and 8th grade time. I may have told you that I read her Julie Garwood's book, The Secret, during that time. It's a little sexy at times and I just skipped over those parts because the story is a good one. Anyway, when she was in college she decided to read The Secret on her own because she had good memories. She called home and said 'Mom! You left out parts!'. I laughed and laughed and said I guessed she was old enough for those parts at that point. She in her 30's now, but she still loves listening to books more than reading them in print. She's an avid audiobook fan - just loves them. Good luck with the books you've chosen - bet he loves them!

  7. I am having a hard time with Greenglass House, I am almost halfway through it and it's just not capturing my attention like I hoped it would. :(

  9. I still need to read Greenglass House. 👍✨

I was crushed when Baz didn't care for Wrinkle. He didn't hate it, but was totally disinterested in continuing on with the series. 😕

I was lucky in that only the first three HP books were out when we started reading them and there were pretty lengthy waits in between the publishing of the other four, so Baz had time to mature enough inbetween. I often wonder how parents "schedule" the reading of the books once they start reading now. 📚

  10. Great list. I used to read Wrinkle in Time aloud to my fifth graders many, many years ago, and it's a book they loved, once we got well into it.
