This Week in Reading - September 1

It's Sunday Post time!  This is hosted by the awesome Caffeinated Book Reviewer and gives us all a chance to recap our week.

What I Got:

Another week with nothing which makes me pretty sad.  I'm expecting a book or two in the mail that should arrive any day and I know I have some review offers in my email that I just haven't accepted or even looked at yet - there just hasn't been time.  Plus, I'm going to a used bookstore today though so I'm betting that will change!

Currently:

Reading:  Buried in the Stacks by Allison Brook and Vanish with the Rose by Barbara Michaels because I needed a reread.

Listening:  I was listening to Nine Perfect Strangers by Lianne Moriarty and while I know it has mixed reviews I was really enjoying it.  However, it had to go back to the library before I finished it so I went back to Rainy Day Sisters by Kate Hewitt until I can get it again.

Watching:  Mostly YouTube videos.

Off the Blog:

This week went seriously haywire and kind of had two worlds colliding.  I've talked a lot about my grandparents.  My grandfather fell two years ago and broke two vertebrae in his neck.  He isn't paralyzed but his mobility has been greatly impaired.  Plus, he's 95 years old so the healing process isn't quite as easy.  They live very much in the country without any real family nearby.  Why they do have people who come in in the morning to help most of the caretaking has fallen onto my grandmother who is 90.  Lately we've been talking about moving them into an assisted living place here and finally got them to agree.  We were expecting to have to wait 3 or 4 weeks before a place was available and were going to use that time to help them get packed and stuff.  Well a place opened earlier then expected and in the last few days it has become very clear that we need to move them immediately.

Another thing we've been talking about is pulling my 9 year old out of school and switching to a hybrid private/online/homeschool situation.  The plan was to withdraw him from school at the end of this week and start our nice and organized plan on the 9th.  Well now we've discovered that we'll be out of town most of this week coordinating the move on the fly so we're going to go out at the beginning of the week and then leave town.  It really isn't that big of a deal I guess but it's really thrown me for a loop.  I like having my ducks in a row and right now I'm not even sure where all the ducks are!  Hopefully once we have them moved and settled in things will calm down a bit and all the school stuff falls into place.

  1. You have a lot going on! I hope it all goes smoothly and your grandparents get moved without a hitch- ditto with the school change. When it rains it pours right? :)

Nine Perfect Strangers is one I still have to get to, I can't believe a Liane Moriarty came out and I haven't read it yet. I need to get on that!

  2. Hope those ducks settle! Good that you were enjoying Nine Perfect Strangers, mixed reviews - I didn't care for it, but it was a little weird!! All the best with settling your grandparents.

  3. Things will feel so much better in a few weeks once the upheaval is gone and there is a new routine to settle in to. It'll be a bit mad leading up to that so I'm hoping that you all get through it with the minimum of trouble. Good luck!

  4. Urg - it's always horrible when competing responsiblities collide! I hope your grandparents' move goes as smoothly as possible and that you are able to get your son's schooling sorted out in due course. Have the best week possible in the circumstances, Katherine!

  6. Uh nothing doesn't sound so bad when you are so busy! I hope everything goes very well with your grandparents and your son's schooling. My Mom broke her hip in January and had to move into a home for help afterward. She's 92. She was in her home and passed her driving test last autumn and everything but things change quickly at that age. Hang in there this week.

  7. On the one hand, it's great that people are living into their 90s and beyond now, but on the other hand, it is so hard because the bones are not holding up and lives are being upended. It's great that your grandparents are both still alive and can make the journey into assisted living together.

My Mom is 92 and still going strong but broke her hip 3 years ago and has lost mobility due to other issues with her back and arm so I moved to Arkansas to take care of her so she could stay in her own home. I'm starting to wonder if assisted living could work for her as I get more and more burnt out.

I can't imagine having to worry about your child's schooling at the same time you're trying to help the grandparents out. I hope all your ducks get settled soon and everyone settles happily into their new lives and routines. And that you get some good books on your "Received!" list soon!

  8. Deep breaths! You will get through this. Having homeschooled a teenager myself, I promise you that a week or two "off" won't hurt the Tornado. And while it's happening a little sooner than anticipated, your grandparents' move sounds like the right thing at the right time—what a blessing that something opened up just when you needed it! Plus, it will be nice to have them closer so you can see them more often.

My dad and stepmom are around 90, and live over 2000 miles away. They are doing well and still live independently, but I worry about them. At least my stepmom's family, and a few of my cousins, are there to keep an eye on them.

I will be thinking of you and your extended family this week, as you weather these transitions. Take some moments for self-care, too... and enjoy those new books when they finally arrive.

  11. I can understand why you are feeling frazzled. Darn those ducks for waddling off!

I hope the next few weeks go smoothly and you can have some peace of mind, and get back on track. *hugs*

  12. I hope all works out well for your grandparents. I'm impressed at how long they were taking care of themselves!

I loved The Long Call...hope you enjoy it, too. I have Nine Perfect Strangers languishing on my Kindle, but every time I plan to read it, another book grabs my attention. (Probably the 450+ pages put me off a bit, lol). Which is ridiculous, since those pages would probably fly on by very quickly.

Have a great week, and here are MY WEEKLY UPDATES

  14. I’m glad you were able to find a situation for your grandparents so quickly, for many the wait can be months or years.

Have a great reading week, and good luck.

  15. Yes, hoping all goes well with the move for your grandparents. A lot of work and organizing, but it will be worth it in the end I suspect. And they will be closer, right? As to your son's schooling - I did homeschooling for a couple of years too and a bit of time not schooling won't hurt at all. In fact, he will be learning some things that aren't found in books. Good luck and I suspect things will even out as the month goes on.

  16. Life can really throw some curveballs, can't it? Sorry for the unexpected chaos. I hope everything goes smoothly and leads to peace and calm in the long run.

  17. Wow, you have been dealing with a lot lately. We just moved my mother in law into a memory care facility. In the weeks leading up to the move, my husband and his siblings were having to stay with her. While I didn't do any of the actual work, it still has been stressful. I hope everything goes well with your grandparents move and your son's school change. Have a great week!
