This Week in Reading - May 5

It's Sunday Post time!  This is hosted by the awesome Caffeinated Book Reviewer and gives us all a chance to recap our week.

What I Got:

The Distant Hour by Kate Morton - I ordered this one a few weeks ago and had pretty much given up on it arriving but after a week and a half vacation in Memphis it showed up on my doorstep!  I'm really looking forward to diving into this one!  (Purchased)

Read and Buried by Eva Gates - There's some irony with this one.  I couldn't remember if I had gotten anything from NetGalley this week so I decided to go check.  Turned out I hadn't but turned out this one was available. I read the previous book and enjoyed it and this one involves discovering a Civil War era box in the foundation of the library (which is a lighthouse) so I couldn't pass it up.  (NetGalley)

The Blood Road by Stuart MacBride - This is the 11th book in the series but I'm hoping it can be read as a stand alone.  A man is found dead which is tragic but the real mystery is that this man supposedly died several years ago.   I love this kind of mystery!  (Publisher)

Currently:

ReadingDying for Devil's Food by Jenn McKinlay and Death by the Sea by Kathleen Bridge

Listening:  I finished Al Capone Does My Shirts by Gennifer Choldenko and am just starting The Long Way Home by Mariah Stewart

Watching:  This week I've been binging NCIS.  The original is definitely my favorite and I really like the cast changes they've made.  I was really worried when some of the main characters started leaving but I feel like they've made good choices with the replacements.

Off the Blog:

It's May!  My birthday is in May (this coming week actually) and since I turned 35 or so I decided I was going to start celebrating my birthday for the whole month and this year is no different.  I'm spending this weekend at my Grandparents since I haven't visited since I haven't visited in a month or so.  I have a list about a mile long of things to do and things I want to buy though I still haven't decided where to go for dinner for my actual birthday.  How do you celebrate your birthday?  I was sliding into the not even going to really bother after I turned 30 but that made me unhappy so I switched to pretty full out!  This way is way better - at least for me!  Not sure what I'm going to do next year when I turn 40.  Maybe a full year of me?  Must think about that.

We are down to just a few weeks of school and I'm so looking forward to it though it has kind of snuck up on us.  I'm scrambling to do arrange a couple of camps.  I know he wants to do Space Camp again and we've talked about tennis camp but I also want to have lots of down time.  We get out of school by the end of May here but we also go back really early - like the first week of August.  I kind of like it because most of August is too hot to go outside anyway or it's just as hot as it was in July but by August we're just super tired of the heat and humidity and bugs.

  1. Happy birthday this week and hope you think of an awesome place to go eat! :) I think since we don't get younger, just older, your way makes sense- might as well go all in and celebrate haha!

First of august does seem kinda early to go back, but they're moving ours up too. We used to go back after Labor Day and now they're moving it into late August.

  3. Happy Birthday, Katherine. I hope you have a wonderful birthday. Have a nice visit with your grandparents. I used to be really into stretching my birthday out an entire month, but no one else in my family wants to cooperate. LOL I do what I can anyway. :-) I can't believe school is almost out either. Mouse gets out the end of May as well. Because of our work schedules, she's limited in camps she can go to because of lack of transportation, but there's a Girl Scout day camp in July that's all day, she may be able to attend. She really wanted to to go to horse camp with her fellow troop members but with her rehearsal schedule and our transportation issues, it just isn't possible. I feel bad, but she seems to understand and be okay with it. I hope you have a great week and enjoy your new books!

  4. A whole year celebrating a 40th sounds a real good way to go. I love that idea, and I did get the idea from you last year of celebrating a birthday for a month which I adopted! But... I'll never have a 40th again! I have a couple of Kate Morton book's sitting there to read but The Distant Hours is not one of them. Hope you love it.

  5. I'm all for full on birthday celebrations. What we do is a pick a whole day of things we love (usually small things but it's great to do them all), and I look forward to it so much. And for big birthdays, we go away something special. I love Kate's books but that wasn't one of my favourites.

I'm still jealous of the Tornado's space camp! Ha ha. It's wonderful that he wants to go back every year. 🚀

    Have a wonderful week. 🌞

  7. I have a birthday week, lol. I start celebrating just before Halloween and don't stop with 'the week of me' until bonfire night on the 5th... It's good to celebrate yourself! 🤣
Hope you have a lovely birthday month!

  12. Okay so I had to run over NG and get Read and Buried as I like that series and didn't know a new one was out! Curious what you thought about Al Capone Does My Shirt, I enjoyed it. I still need to read the newest one.

Have a great day and happy reading,

We're on the same school schedule as you are. Only a couple more weeks. Hard to believe!

  14. A full year of celebration when you turn 40 sounds amazing! Hope you enjoy your special day this week. It's been too long since I last read a Kate Morton novel.

  15. Happy birthday. I think one should celebrate her birthday however she wants to. I like to not have to cook and to be left alone to craft in peace.

  16. High Five to the people born in May! My birthday is in May too! My birthday falls the day after Memorial day for I will celebrate the entire weekend since my husbands birthday is that weekend also. Two Geminis in one house is like complete chaos but we work, oddly. lol

I hope you have a great visit with your grandparents! My kids are out at the end of June. One more month, it will be nice to not get up early and make lunches at 5am.

I hope you have a great week, Katherine! Happy Reading! xx

  18. Happy Birthday to you! My birthday passed last week and we went on a dinner cruise. I loved the sea in the spring, even though it started drizzling for a bit.

  19. Happy birthday this week! On Books of My Heart, Robin, Melanie and I all have birthdays this week too. I have no plans except to take a day to relax and do what I feel like doing, probably reading or crafting. Maybe we will go somewhere interesting to eat but not on a weekend or Friday night either.

My daughter went to a girls STEM camp at a college and they built flying rockets, robots, and had MacGyver classes. I wanted to go! They picked 400 girls out of 5000 applicants and it was free to attendees, sponsored by tech companies in the area. Have a great week!

  21. Happy Birthday, Katherine! I think you should definitely do a year of celebrating for your 40th :) It is hard to go to NetGalley and not add a book so I completely understand. I am still wondering how the end of the school got here so quickly. Have a great week!

  22. Happy Birthday, Katherine - and yes... a year of celebrating for your 40th sounds entirely reasonable. I think the 40s are a great decade - you know who you are and your strengths and weaknesses. May is a great birthday month for us, too - my sister, my nephew and my son all celebrate birthdays in May:)). Have a fabulous one, Katherine!
