Between the Lies - Mystery Review

Goodreads: Between the Lies by Michelle Adams

Rating: Very Good
Source:  Publisher

Description:  The truth is hiding between the lies.
What would you do if you woke up and didn't know who you were?

Chloe Daniels regains consciousness in a hospital with no memory of how she got there.
She doesn't recognize the strangers who call themselves family. She can't even remember her own name.

What if your past remained a mystery?

As she slowly recovers, her parents and sister begin to share details of her life.
The successful career. The seaside home. The near-fatal car crash.
But Chloe senses they're keeping dark secrets--and her determination to uncover the truth will have devastating consequences.

What if the people you should be able to trust are lying to you?

Genre: Mystery - Thriller

Why I Picked This Book:  I couldn't pass up the blurb.  I've read an amnesia related mystery once before and really enjoyed.

My Impression:  I have mixed feelings about unreliable narrator style thrillers.  Sometimes I love them and am on the end of my seat.  Sometimes I I feel like I'm trudging through soggy mud in the fog and just want something to happen.  This was a bit different but in the most positive of ways.  For starters Chloe knows she's unreliable.  She knows she can't trust her own thoughts or memories but at the same time can't quite make herself trust those around her.  It put the reader on the same page as the narrator so it kind of felt like we were all trying to figure stuff out together vs the reader trying to find the truth in the lies.

The whole plot of this is on my list of worst nightmares and is one that I didn't know I had.  This isn't one of those scary books that has you double checking door locks.  It's more eerie and unnerving and the whole concept is incredibly unsettling.  The idea of being locked in your own brain, unable to remember, unable to trust and unable to do anything about it seriously makes my brain run cold.  Just what had happened the night of the accident?  And just what had happened in the life that Chloe can't remember.

This was a compelling read that was a nice shift to the usual unreliable narrator style thriller.  It pulled me in from page one and I didn't want to put it down!

Would I Read More of this Series/Author?  Absolutely!  I thoroughly enjoyed this mystery and am looking forward to reading more from this author.

Would I Recommend this Book?  If you enjoy mysteries with a bit of unreliable narrator than this is a great choice.

* I received this book in exchange for an honest review.  As always my opinions and impressions are completely my own. *

  1. I remember seeing something about this one a few weeks ago. I'm guessing it's just come out? I'll watch for it at the library because these types of books do appeal to me - when I'm not taking a break from the psycho thrillers. And, yes, I would be horrified to find myself in that situation too.

  2. I am not a fan of an unreliable narrator, however one like this is one I could take. Hope Chloe got resolution!

  4. I don't always love unreliable narrator-oriented mysteries either, but I do usually like amnesia-themed ones. I hadn't heard of this one before, but now I'm definitely going to look it up!

  5. Unreliable narrators so true- sometimes they work for me and sometimes they don't. I do like it when they KNOW they're unreliable themselves, like because of amnesia or whatever. Waking up and discovering secrets being kept from you is a trope I do tend to like. :) Glad this was good!

  6. Like many commenters I'm a bit reluctant when it comes to unreliable narrators but I like what you had to say and will put it on my GR list. Glad you enjoyed it!
