This Week in Reading - January 27

It's Sunday Post time!  This is hosted by the awesome Caffeinated Book Reviewer and gives us all a chance to recap our week.

What I Got:

An Artless Demise by Anna Lee Huber

Between the Lines by Michelle Adams

Glossed and Found by India Ink

Killer Keepsakes by Jane K. Cleland

Withering Heights by Dorothy Cannell

Currently:

Reading:  Gilt by Association by Karen Rose Smith and No Escape Claws by Sofie Ryan

Listening:  I finished Phantom Evil by Heather Graham and am now listening to The Invention of Hugo Cabret by Brian Selznick

Watching:  Nothing new.  I'm still enjoying this season of Top Chef and have been watching some old movies.  I've been watching a lot of crime shows on Investigation Discovery mostly as background noise but I've realized it's making me kind of jumpy so I'm thinking I'm going to slow down on that.

Off the Blog:

I'm on the last week of the latest 30 Day Yoga Challenge by Yoga with Adriene over on YouTube.  She does a 30 day program every January but this is the first year I've ever done it real time.  I had really gone off the rails with exercising and this has really got me moving and feeling better again.  Starting February I'm going to start mixing in some cardio and other things and starting to run again when it isn't too cold in the morning.  I'm excited to be getting started again.

I'm struggling to find something for the Tornado to read.  He's reading levels are fine but getting him to actually sit down and read is a struggle.  He's outgrown the Mo Willems books that he loves (even though he still reads them) but we haven't found anything to replace them.  He likes The Boxcar Children audio books so I'm trying to get him to actually read the stories but any other suggestions would be appreciated.  He's 9 and reads at grade level (3) or a bit higher but doesn't like anything that's scary or mean spirited (I tried to get him to read a book in the Bad Kitty series but he didn't like it because the characters were being mean to the cat).  It's been a bit of a struggle and I suspect a large part of it is just stubbornness so I'm hoping to find something that just grabs him and pulls him and makes him want to read.  To much to ask?

  1. Wow, how great that The Boxcar Children books are still available. I remember seeing them in a local library a few years ago, but I read them MANY years ago.

Your cozies are calling to me. Enjoy!

  2. I keep thinking the Anna Lee Huber books look good. I may try those at some point.

I got out of my exercise routine over the holidays too, and now I'm trying to get back on track. Can totally relate! Good luck with the running!

    Have an awesome week. :)

  3. I'm afraid I don't know anything about kids books so I'm afraid I can't offer any suggestions! If he doesn't like anything with mean characters, that rules out anything I can think of!

  4. Hmmm...as to your kid book query, I'm not so familiar now. Deb at Readerbuzz (retired elementary librarian) or Wendy at Musings of a Bookish Kitty (has a daughter in elementary) or Tina at Tina says... (used to be an elementary librarian, now middle school) might know more. Sorry I'm not going to try to do links. You can find them. Good luck! My daughter loved to be read to but she still doesn't read in print all that much. She's more into audiobooks even now as an adult.

  5. Yes... finding books to read at this age is a challenge. My 9 year old grandson has loved the How To Train Your Dragon books, which are funny, adventurous and quite anarchic and I've started him on How To Train Your Parents, which again are quite funny. Good luck with finding suitable books - but there will be something out there that will fire up his imagination:). Have a great week, Katherine.

  6. Getting my little guy to actually read is challenging but he devours Audiobooks like a book munching fiend! I'm hoping the love of audiobooks will eventually translate over to actually picking up a book. *shrugs*
He's currently on a Rick Riordan binge and they're fantastic books... Myths, legends, lots of humour. I recommend them.

  7. Love the clever names of your books. I see you have a new Anna Lee Huber title-- I love her books but haven't branched out from the Lady Darby series yet.

For Tornado, and I'm trying to remember what my grandson, 12, used to devour... Diary of a Wimpy Kid series and Harry Potter books? Don't know if these are above his level but my grandson read, and reread these. I'm sad to say that he doesn't read as much now since he plays Minecraft and such. I'll put my thinking cap on and think some more on this.

  9. I love that Tornado has a warm heart at such a young age, and doesn't want to see anyone hurt. This is someone who will grow up treating others well in life. I would want my 8 year old granddaughter to hang out with him. What about The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane? Kudos on the yoga challenge! Thanks to you posting about exercise on Youtube, I've found quite a few that I like a lot, and even better that they're free! I hear you on slowing down on investigative shows.(lol) I save all the Top Chef shows on DVR, and frequently go back to watch them because I'm hooked. I was so sad on Friday to hear that that Chef Fatima (Fati) had passed away from cancer on this past Friday at just 29. Her doctor had given her at least a year, but sadly that wasn't the case. Despite her condition she had such a positive and kind spirit. Happy National Chocolate Cake Day! RO

  10. I need to start moving myself. I am hoping when the weather gets nicer I will go for walks and up my exercise up. I'm enjoying Top Chef too. Hope you find books for your son. Have a great week!

  11. Good for you doing the yoga challenge, Katherine. I'm trying to move more this year. I've been doing water exercise when I can get to the class.

I think I have the first Lady Darby book and really should read it. I've also read some of the Jane K. Cleland series. I hope you enjoy all your books. Have a great week.

  12. My kids loved the Magic Treehouse series. They both don't read anymore but we have a bunch of them and these seem like cute book.

I have The 30 day Yoga Challenge saved on myYoutube. That is the one I am planning to do. I am hoping to start in Feb. I need to find the perfect time to start doing it. I am excited and trying to get a little more healthy.

Have a great week, Katherine! Happy Reading! xx

  13. I wish I could help you but I have no idea what a 9 yo boy would like to read. I know my daughter like Junie B. Jones around that age or maybe it was younger. I am not even sure anymore it has been so darn long. Good luck! Have a wonderful week.

  14. I've been wanting to try yoga, but I've been procrastinating :) I'm also reading No Escape Claws. I love this series and this book starts off good. Hope you have a great week!

  15. Baz was a super sensitive reader, too. He couldn't read the Goosebumps books. I know it's just one book, but he really liked Farm Boy by Wilder. Did you have a look at the Pure Dead Magic books? I'll have to go through my Goodreads shelves and think about it.

    Have a wonderful week. 🌞

  16. I remember reading a couple of Brian Selznick books, had amazing art in them. I guess kids have the same view as we do, they like some books and not others so getting ones for his taste is a challenge.

  17. We love Top Chef. :) I saw that Yoga with Adriene channel and was thinking about giving it a shot! I used to do yoga religiously until I had my son, then I seemed to have a hard time fitting it in. I was thinking an online version might work - and it sounds like you like her, so I will have to give it a whirl!

Aw I sympathize with your son! I totally get it - I am actually still really sensitive to that as a reader (and actually posted about it today's post lol). It's a good quality. I can't remember the grade level anymore, but maybe The Penderwicks series?

  18. I think when my boy was 9 it was hard to get him to read anything other than Minecraft books. It's still hard to find books for him that he likes, but he's found some good Middle Grade books that he likes (he's 12 now). He loves Lauren Magaziner.

  19. Congrats on the yoga. I always say I’m going to try that, but then I never do. Have you tried graphic novels for Tornado? I know a lot of kids like those because they can finish them quickly. Have a great week!

Aj @ Read All The Things!

  20. I have always wanted to try yoga. I don't know why I haven't yet. I do need to start doing something because nothing isn't working out. I hope you find something your son likes to read and I sorry that I really have no recommendations. Have a great week!

  21. I can't remember when my kids outgrew The Magic Treehouse books (I know they read them in 2nd grade so maybe into 3rd?), but they enjoyed that series. My daughter started really enjoying nonfiction better than fiction about that age so you might try finding books on topics he's interested in.

  22. My nice was hard to buy books for too. Very sensitive. We couldn't go to many movies either. I took her to Lion King and I was afraid she would never forgive me. Good luck with your exercising and enjoy those new reads.

  23. Oops. That should say my niece.

  24. I want to do yoga but my knees are to bad for that, maybe once I lose some weight! :) I know nothing about levels when it comes to reading but have you tried like Big Nate or Middle School, they are kind of like Diary of a Wimpy Kid in format. Or what about Roald Dahl Books? I know nothing about what 9 year olds might like...lol.

Hope you find something he will like!

  25. Yay for doing your yoga challenge! I'm not one for yoga at all (I've tried lol) but I've been doing my 10,000 steps and it is good to get moving. Hope you're able to find something for him to read soon!

  26. The cozy titles always make me smile. GFY on the exercise! My son wasn't a big reader but Roald Dahl managed to hook him for a few years when he was in early elementary years.

  27. While I was his age I loved reading Archie comics and Garfield. Goosebumps too, but he might think that scary. He'll find something. :)

Hope you have a great week!

  28. Does his class take him to the school library? How's the classroom library of his teacher? My youngest finds books from her school library and from her classroom. She hates looking around at the local library for some reason.

  29. oh I like the idea of Magic TreeHouse - I was thinking cozy mystery. Nancy Drew but maybe Hardy boys? My daughter liked the science oriented ones Magic School Bus ones with Miss Frizzle too. My niece liked Captain Underpants but my daughter didn't read those. I liked A Wrinkle in Time. I'm probably not much help here.

Yay for Yoga. We started water exercise and Chair Yoga this week at the YMCA.

I am working on that Heather Graham series. I have bought some, got some on KU, some are on AR. Right now I am waiting on #4 through Interlibrary Loan. Have a good week. Stay warm.
