Friday Linkups: Gilda Joyce, Psychic Investigator

It's Friday linkup time!  I'm linking up with the Book Blogger Hop hosted by Coffee Addicted Writer, Book Beginnings of Fridays hosted by Rose City Reader, and the Friday 56 hosted by Freda's Voice

This Week's Book Blogger Hop Question:
Would you take a book with you when you go to your family's Thanksgiving gathering/dinner?

My Answer;
It depends.  If I was staying overnight than I absolutely would but if I was just going for the day I wouldn't.  At least with my family Thanksgiving is always a bit of a madhouse and I always end up rushing around helping finish up last minute details.  I might bring a book for the Tornado to keep him occupied but not one for me.

This week's book is Gilda Joyce, Psychic Investigator by Jennifer Allison.  This was one of those random library pickups that happen sometimes.  It was on the endcap and I liked the title plus I've been feeling pulled towards Middle Grade fiction lately.  I've read the first chapter and so far I'm enjoying it.  It's definitely on the younger end of the young adult spectrum and Gilda really does come off as a typical preteen.  Looking forward to seeing how the story develops!

The Beginning:
In the back row of Mrs. Weinstock's eighth-grade English classroom, Gilda Joyce chewed on a lock of her dark hair and pretended to listen as her classmates described their plans for the summer on the last day of the school year.

My Thoughts:
I think I'd probably zone out too.  A whole classroom full on 8th graders discussing summer plans one after the other sounds like it could drift into tedious!

The 56:
Dad:  Sorry, kiddo.  I got here just in time to meet him, but we decided not to wake you up.
Me: I don't believe you

My Thoughts:
I'm not here yet so I don't know exactly what's going on but this is a transcript of Gilda's memories and this one is about Santa Claus.  Gilda isn't buying her dad's explanations!

This is a bit of an unusual pick for me so I'm curious to see what I think of it.  I know the later books in the series seem to have been better received.  What do you think?  Keep reading?

  1. Holy cow, that question about a book at Thanksgiving hit home for me! I love cooking and had been doing the dinners at our house until my in-laws decided to host at their house. For years we have had to go there and one year, since my "services " weren't needed I was reading a book, one that I was almost done with and at a crucial part of the plot! Oh my, you'd think I killed the family dog, such a transgression.
So now I crochet while I sit around because it's more interactive. Oh yeah, and drink a lot of wine.

  2. My answer is pretty much the same as yours. I'd have a book with me tho, on my Kindle app on my phone.

  3. Sometimes a fun middle grade read is just right. Hope it's good. And I'm the same way- if I'm going to be gone for a few days I'll take a book (or two), but if it's just for the day, there's no way I'm getting reading in anyway so why bother? Plus you have to like visit and stuff when you visit family lol. Cutting into my reading time (ha ha I'm kidding).

  4. You bet I would and do. I take a couple of Kindles and paperbacks. I cannot be without a book!

  5. For the Thanksgiving question, I'd probably take some picture books because they are enjoyable for all ages. Plus, with all the bustle of a busy holiday, picture books are just the right length. Enjoy!

  7. I think you should keep reading! Those random library books that we pick up can often really surprise us. I think it sounds like a cute read actually and I have a niece who would probably like this series. Might have to recommend it to her mother for her.

  8. I host Thanksgiving so my books will be with me but I will have no time for them! This looks cute even if a little young. Enjoy!

  10. I'm unfamiliar with this series. But the excerpt looks interesting? Here is my Friday 56https://coffeeandcatsblog.wordpress.com/2016/11/18/friday-56-16/

  11. Hi Katherine,

I shall relate your question to Christmas, as we don't celebrate Thanksgiving here in the UK. We generally spend Christmas Day with my brother and his family and I would absolutely never take a book with me, as it would be totally frowned upon. I definitely get my reading addiction from my dad, as no-one else in my family ever picks up a book and generally laugh at me when I even want to discuss anything I am reading.

I don't read much in the way of YA fiction, although I love the cover art of 'Gilda Joyce' and could be tempted into picking this one up off the shelf.

Thanks for sharing and enjoy your weekend :)

  14. I read, I am normally not needed to cook, they know I am not good at it. I can bake cookies and that is what I bring...lol.

This book sounds good, I hope you enjoy it. :)

  15. "Never leave home without a book." (But it is frowned upon in my group, too.)

I'm curious why she has red hair on the cover but the book opens as she chews on her dark hair. What's up with that?

  16. I always have a book with me, but only open it when I know it doesn't look rude. :)

    Have a wonderful Thanksgiving.

    Happy Hopping!!

  17. LOL I'd probably take a book anyway. Even if I didn't get a chance to read it I'd just feel better knowing it's there. lol

  19. Thanksgiving Day is usually hectic for most families, so I can imagine you wouldn't have the time to even open a book! Lol. How cute that you have a child nicknamed "The Tornado", and how wonderful that he or she (either one could be a tornado!) is a reader! When I was a kid, that was the SUREST way to keep me out of trouble!

I think most of us bookworms do carry a book everywhere we go, even if we won't be able to read it. That's just the way we are!

Your middle-grade selection has a very cute cover! I don't usually read such books, but this one looks quite intriguing, so I'm going to check it out further on Goodreads!

Thanks for sharing! Also, thanks for dropping by and commenting on my BBH post! Happy Thanksgiving to you and your family!! :)

  20. If we are having Thanksgiving at a relatives, it means we will be staying overnight. No one leaves close enough to us to be able to make it a day trip. Even so, I imagine I would always take a book with me. If I am not having to entertain my daughter the entire time (which I often don't because she's demanding attention from some poor relative), I sometimes can sneak off and read. Especially when the football comes on or if the conversation turns in a direction that is best I avoid.

  21. If we are having Thanksgiving at a relatives then usually no, I always have the Kindle app on my phone but that's just a backup. But I usually have to help out and chase kids so there's really never any time.
