This Week in Reading - April 19

It's Sunday Post time!  This is hosted by the awesome Caffeinated Book Reviewer and gives us all a chance to recap our week.

What I Got:

The Other Daughter by Lauren Willig - This one sounds really intriguing.  It's set in England in the 1920s and the main character's dear departed father isn't quite so departed. (NetGalley)

A Match Made on Main Street by Olivia Miles - I love a 2nd chance romance and one involving food is just too much for me to pass up! (NetGalley)

Death of a Mad Hatter by Jenn McKinlay - McKinlay is one of my favorite cozy authors and I have (but haven't read) the first in the series.  I love the title on this one!  (Paperbackswap)

That's Not English by Erin Moore - I won this in a giveaway hosted by the awesome Trish over at Love, Laughter and a Touch of Insanity.  (Giveaway)

Currently:

Reading:  Lowcountry Boneyard by Susan M. Boyer, Heroes Are My Weakness by Susan Elizabeth Phillips and Great Expectations by Charles Dickens (still!)

Listening:  I just finished the first Flavia de Luce on Friday and will probably re-download the David Sedaris I was listening to on Monday.  I'm on the waiting list for The Girl on the Train but it will be awhile!

Watching: I haven't actually watched it yet but I recorded A Bone to Pick: An Aurora Teagarden Mystery a few days ago and I'm really excited.  It's a Hallmark movie so I'm not expecting stunning quality but this the Aurora Teagarden series was my favorite of Charlaine Harris' books.  As well I'm watching my usual shows and I'm kind of ridiculously excited that Deadliest Catch is back on.

Off the Blog:

Despite having the best intentions I still haven't gotten my garden in the ground.  I'm hoping to go on a bit of a plant buying spree today if the rain holds off.  I'm planning on trying lettuce this year which I'm kind of excited about.  Also, I can't wait for garden fresh tomatoes!  They're so much better than the grocery store version!

I have realized that school is going to be out in just over a month.  The older ones are pretty low maintenance but I'm trying to get some ideas for the Tornado.  He definitely needs some scheduled activities but finding that balance can be challenging.  I did find these:

which I think will be great.  They have a bunch of different ones and he's had a good time doing "excavations" before.  There's an added bonus that he's obsessed with dionosaurs.

I discovered this recipe for Balsamic Honey Pulled Pork Sliders from Your Home Based Mom buried deep on my Sandwiches, Burgers, Pizza, and Tacos Board and they are freakishly good.  I could seriously just drink the sauce.  It makes a pretty good bit but it is easily re-heatable.  I made if for dinner the other night and have been eating the leftovers for lunch since then.  So good!

  4. I haven't read Jenn McKinlay's hat series, but I do love her cupcake shop books. I think I'll highlight those some weekend for the weekend cooking event. And, of course, I'm behind on that series too. :-)

    1. The cupcake series would be such fun as a Weekend Cooking post! I think my favorite of hers is probably the library series.

  5. Still too cold for planting here. I got a cousin in Italy one of those dino kits and he was over the moon for it.
I had never read Susan Eliz. Phillips before but am currently listening to one - the title of which I cannot recall.

    2. I like Susan Elizabeth Phillips though she sometimes has some icky factors. I'm not sure this is the book I'd start with.

    1. If you do try the recipe I hope you enjoy it! I wish we had a greenhouse around here. I'll have to wait until summer!

  7. I am waiting a few more weeks before planting my garden as well but I am just as excited as you are about it. My youngest LOVES tomatoes and eats them faster than I can grow them so we will definitely have a couple of tomato plants along with everything else. I have A Bone To Pick on my shelves and really should read it soon as I enjoyed Real Murder a lot. Have a great week!

  8. I love the idea of a garden....but not the work involved...LOL. The last garden I had was in the 1970s....but I still recall how wonderful it was to have lots of zucchini and tomatoes.

Enjoy your new books...and planning for the summer. Here are MY WEEKLY UPDATES

    1. Zucchini is a sneaky vegetable. Every few days I discover a giant one that wasn't there before. It does take a lot of work!

  12. No garden here, I live in a condo and I have 10 black thumbs. :D Good luck with yours when you get it started. That sandwich does sound yummy. :)

Your new books all look so good. I'm looking forward to your reviews. Have a great week!

  14. I can't wait to get my garden started but the weather is just so weird. Probably closer to mother's day I will be able to do it My daughter never had home grown tomatoes and she loves tomatoes so I can't wait for her to try them.

My mom will be home with the kids over the summer and she is like crafty gram lol so I know they will be well entertained and I plan to take them to the zoo and nature trails in the summer on my Fridays that I have off.

Have a great week! Enjoy all your new books!!!

  15. I love the 1920's setting for The Other Daughter. I want to plant but our weather makes me leery. I just need to be patient and continue with my indoor spring cleaning before moving outside.

  16. That's Not English sounds like my kind of book... and I just pinned that recipe for the pulled pork sliders. YUM! Hope you have a good week, Katherine.

  17. I love the setting of the '20's. But I don't think I've really read anything in London from that period. It's usually NYC. I'll definitely watch out for your review.
I have a long list of tropes I love in my romances and 2nd chances are near the top. I love to learn about the history the couple shared and than to see them finally realize they're meant to be. Sigh. :)
I can't wait for my Nana's garden to bloom(when she can actually start on it). Her tomatoes and veggies are delicious. So right. Much better than the store.
    Happy reading!

  18. Haven't heard of The Other Daughter, but love that cover! I need to start going through my Pinterest boards and cooking some recipes I've saved. Thanks for visiting my post earlier!

  19. The Other Daughter is new to me, and sounds really good. So does your recipe for Pulled Pork Sliders! We don't eat pork, but I could easily substitute chicken for this and it would be fine. Have a good week.

  20. A good week. Best of luck with the garden.

  21. I hope to plant herbs, vegetables, and fruit trees this summer when we landscape the backyard. I'm still agonizing over paint colour for the walls. I did just finish a book - The Shadowy Horses - of Susanna Kearsley. I really enjoyed it and downloaded another book of hers, The Winter Sea.

  22. I need to start reading Lowcountry Boneyard! And I'm looking forward t hearing what you think of the A Bone to Pick movie - the books have been on my TBR for a while now.

  23. The Other Daughter does sound interesting, and I really need to find that Jenn McKinlay series - I like her library series, and isn't the hat series set in London? Or am I remembering a different series?

Have fun coming up with activities for the Tornado! The dinosaur thing looks interesting. And what about games - he's old enough to start playing Set, I think.

  24. I'm curious what you are going to think about A Bone to Pick. I haven't read the books but have been interested in the series. I can't wait to get my garden in the ground but around here we don't plant it till right after mother's day. Usually there is no chance of freezing after that day. We'll see though.

  25. I didn't realize there were Aurora Teagarden movies. I'll have to look for those. And I remember the summer dilemma--finding activities for the kids without over scheduling. I hope you find some fun activities.I'm going to have to look-up that pulled pork recipe. That sounds great. Hope your reading week is fun, Katherine!

  26. I love the title Death of a Mad Hatter too. :-)

I haven't read any of Harris' Teagarden series, but I've always meant to. I didn't know there was a movie out!

That Dino kit looks like fun. We gave Mouse's best friend something similar for her birthday last year and I've been meaning to search one out for Mouse. I think she'd love it.

I hope you have a great week!
