Halloween Edition Question:
"Where is the creepiest place you have read a book?"
My Answer:
When I was in college I worked as a runner for a law firm that had it's office in a historic house. The house itself wasn't particularly creepy - it was a very clean lined federal style house not like the over the top gothic Victorian across the street. Then one day I ended up in the office by myself for some reason and the noises that I always thought were just regular old house creeks sounded an awful lot like footsteps and there was the constant feel that if you turned your head there was going to be someone standing there. I was sitting on a couch reading while waiting for a delivery and it was more like forcing myself to stare at the page. I'm not sure how much reading I got done! When I mentioned how creeped out I got to the paralegal she told me that she refused to be alone in the house! So I might be a wimp but at least I wasn't alone!
The Beginning:
"Walter Baldwin rubbed his eyes and looked again, praying that everything would be back to normal. It wasn't."

"With the grape game over, Kit took her dinner and a glass of wine to her favorite room in the house, a small octagonal conservatory bay with five tall windows through which she could look out onto the front courtyard.
Despite the peaceful sounding 56 I have a feeling Kit isn't going to have to many peaceful moments in her favorite room!
So what do you think? Does murder in New Orleans sound appealing? Would you keep reading? And where is the creepiest place you've read (or tried to read)?

ReplyDeleteScariest place I ever read a book? Hmm...I was reading a scary story while riding in the car at night. We were on vacation and still had a ways to go to our hotel. The story was about a couple driving on a road late at night, and you guessed it, they had a ways to go to their hotel. LOL I got so creeped out I was afraid to get out of the car to go to our hotel room!

ReplyDeleteI am adding this one to my 'Want To Read' list, despite the fact that this is book 5 in the series. I am hoping that they can be read as stand alone stories, so would be interested to hear your thoughts when you have read it! Don does say on his site that they would be better read in order, but I am wondering if this is simply a ploy to get you hooked on the series!
I can't say too much about your lines, as I did rather cheat and looked up the premise for the story, which kind of gives it all way. Given current worldwide events, this one might come just a little too close to the truth for comfort and the writing does appear quite descriptive and detailed.

This was the first book in the series that I've read and I had no problem figuring out who was who. You may be more involved with the characters if you read them in order but it in no way affected my enjoyment.
DeleteI had the same worry about the topic being too close to home but didn't find it too uncomfortable. I definitely recommend giving this series a try!
I wonder what normal is? Or at least to the character, and why is it out of whack?!
