This Week in Reading - August 31

It's Sunday which means it's time to link up with Kimba over at the Caffeinated Book Reviewer to talk about what went on this week.

What I Got:

NetGalley:

So We Read On: How The Great Gatsby Came to Be and Why It Endures by Maureen Corrigan - I swore that I wasn't going to make any requests this week but when I came across this one I couldn't resist it!  Especially since I had just listened to The Great Gatsby.

Snow Angel Cove by Raeanne Thayer - I'm already swimming in Christmas books and it's only August!  I've heard good things about this author so I'm looking forward to giving this one a try.

Almost Famous Women by Megan Mayhew Bergman - My favorite biographies are always about people I have never heard or know very little about.  This is a book of short biographies about women behind their more famous relatives - Lord Byron's illegitimate daughter, Edna St. Vincent Millay's sister, Oscar Wilde's niece and others.

The Texan's Christmas by Tanya Michaels - I almost didn't request this one because the cover features a very pregnant woman.  Now I don't know if I did pregnancy wrong but romantic wouldn't be the word I would use to describe it.  Especially as pregnant as the woman on the cover is.  However, I really loved the previous book by Michaels so I figured I'd try and get past the baby issue and give this one a try.

Other:

A Novel Way to Die by Ali Brandon - a cozy set in a bookstore.  I was thrilled when I got this through paperbackswap.

Dangerous Denial by Amy Ray - Kindly sent from the author for review.  I'm looking forward to reading it.

The Bone Room by James Viatrius - I enjoyed the first two chapters of this one when I read them a few months ago and I'm looking forward to seeing what happens with characters.  I'm thinking this paranormal mystery set in a hospital with a vampire twist will be great for Halloween!

Currently:

Reading: Murder on the Links by Agatha Christie - this is the 2nd Poirot book and I've been enjoying starting at the beginning with him.
Death in the Dolomites by David Wagner - a murder mystery set in the Italian alps.  Expect the review tomorrow.
Talk Sweetly to Me by Courtney Milan - I've finally gotten around to trying Milan and so far she doesn't disappoint.  Review Wednesday.

Watching:  I'm still watching CSI:NY on Netflix.  My summer shows are starting to end.  Perception and Who Do You Think You Are? both had their finales and I don't think Unforgettable has too much longer.  I really enjoyed all 3 this year.  I'm looking forward to some on the new fall shows - particularly NCIS: New Orleans.  I like Scott Bakula and I'm excited about a show set in New Orleans.  I spent a lot of time there when I was younger.

Listening:  I'm finishing up The Great Escape by Susan Elizabeth Phillips.  I've been enjoying it but I'm not sure how I feel about long books in audio form.  I get a little impatient.  Next up I have The School of Essential Ingredients by Erica Bauermeister.

Off the Blog:

This was one of those weeks that felt like it was all back and forth.  Between appointments and errands and loose ends I feel like I was mostly going in circles and got nothing accomplished.  This weekend is birthday weekends.  We celebrated my mother's yesterday with family from out of state that I don't see nearly enough.  I always make baked good for her birthday which is fun.  It gives me an opportunity to try some of the interesting recipes I see on Pinterest.  Today is my husband's birthday so we're going to dinner and doing cake and presents later.

We're ordering Emma's cap and gown which is just weird.  It's hard to believe that she'll be off to college next year and then Paul will go the year after.  It's definitely going to be strange to be down to 1 child for most of the year.

On the Blog:

What Happened This Week:

The 3rd book in Donna Kauffman's  romance series set in a little town on the coast of Maine
My Top Ten Tuesday list - the books I want to read but don't own yet
Sarah Jio's Goodnight June a fantastic book with an inside look to the writing of Goodnight Moon
A new mystery from Kate Dyer-Seeley with a great setting and a fun premise!
My Friday linkups featuring excerpts from Great Expectations - I'm scared!
My review for the Chopped Cookbook

Next Week:

Monday: A review for How to be a Parisian because I've been in a Paris kind of mood.
Tuesday: The Top Ten Characters at my lunch table
Wednesday: Talk Sweetly to Me by Courtney Milan
Thursday: Death in the Dolomites by David Wagner
Friday: Linkups with excerpts from whatever book I'm reading by the end of the week
Saturday: The 2nd wrap up from Trish at Love, Laughter and a Touch of Insanity's Cookbook Challenge

Happy reading!

  1. That book about Gatsby looks soooo soo good!! Personally I can't wait for fall TV to start. I am just bored. Though I have been watching the Strain and that is super creepy.

    1. I'm really excited about the Gatsby book. I just finished listening to the audio version a few weeks ago so I'm looking forward to taking a deeper look at the book itself. I'm definitely looking forward to the fall lineup. Can't wait to see what I like and what I don't!

  2. I love Who Do You Think You Are? They had some good episodes this season. I wish there were more episodes every season. Their seasons seem so short.

    1. I did love this season though I haven't watched the last two. The Cynthia Nixon story was shocking especially. I agree that the seasons are way to short though!

  4. I'm also reading an Agatha Christie book right now! (And Then There Were None) It's my first and I'm really enjoying it so far.

I love your "Currently" part. I would do something like that, but I don't watch much television to do it. Great idea though for people that do watch shows a lot!

Good luck on this coming week and happy reading :) Here is my post if you don't mind looking at it http://t.co/72VvJdvEBS

    1. And Then There Were None is fabulous! It's a little more action oriented than the others but the twists and turns are pure Agatha.
Thank you! I've only recently started doing that but I watch too much TV and it's fun to put it somewhere!

  6. Your comment about doing pregnancy wrong made me laugh, I so agree that it's not romantic, especially the last months lol ! I feel nostalgic too because it's the last year I'm accompanying my youngest for her first day in school, times flies... Enjoy your book haul and have a great week ;)

    1. I'm glad I'm not the only one! I just don't get the whole pregnancy/romance tie in. I'm sure the last day we walk the youngest in is going to be rough so I can imagine!

  9. I tried to stay away from Netgalley this week but I couldn't help requesting some upcoming releases. The Bone Room sounds really good. I've been trying to read more paranormal (just to change things up) so I'll check this out. Have a great week!

    1. NetGalley is a dangerous dangerous place! It gets me every time! I really enjoyed the 2 chapters of The Bone Room and I'm hoping it stays good. The characters seemed really unique which I liked.

  11. Hope you guys have a great weekend. I'm thinking of trying a Christie as well since I just saw a review for And Then There Were None and realized I really need to read this book at some point!

A Novel Way to Die and Death in the Dolomites both sound good too. I've been in a mystery mood lately...

    1. You definitely need to read And Then There Were None. It's a great book and a good intro to Christie. Just keep in mind it's a little more action oriented than her other books.
I'm almost done with Death in the Dolomites and am liking it. At this point it's definitely one I'd recommend.

  12. I felt (and looked) like a whale in my last months of pregnancy, so no, I didn't feel particularly romantic! But your books look and sound good. I was hoping for the RaeAnne Thayne, since I've been following that series, but I haven't heard back from Harlequin/NetGalley yet.

It's disconcerting when you realize your children are grown and headed off to college soon. We just dropped 'Robin' off for her second year. The house is quiet again, except for one rather demanding cat. (We have two, but the other isn't demanding; mostly he sleeps.)

    Have a great week!

    1. I requested the Thayne ages ago and just now got it. Harlequin seems to do their approvals in odd batches. I'm sure you'll get it soon!
It's definitely weird to really think about being a single child (and eventually childree) household. Luckily I have enough hobbies and plans and projects that I' think I'll be fine. We have 2 cats as well - one good and one completely crazy!

  18. I'm in the same boat with NetGalley. I couldn't get to my library for a couple of weeks due to traveling back and forth to San Diego to help my son settle in his new apartment & get set for school, so I clicked until suddenly I had 7 new books, only turned down for one, oops.

I am binge-watching and loving Criminal Minds on Netflix, starting season 5 now. I used to watch CSI (the original in Las Vegas) but stopped when the main male character William Peterson left the show, then a couple of others did too. I enjoyed the rapport between him and Marg Hegenberger. I've lived in NY and near Miami so those spin-offs didn't appeal to me-- I want to see a new (to me) area-- so maybe I will watch the New Orleans show.

Thanks for a good post today.

    1. Yep! That's pretty much exactly what happened to me! I get to the point where I'm almost hoping to get turned down! Glad you got your son settled.
I didn't like the direction CSI went right after Peterson left but I've actually liked Ted Danson which is odd because I normally can't stand him. I have high hopes for NCIS: New Orleans. I like the actors and there's a lot to work with location wise.

    1. I love Poirot though I probably prefer Marple as a whole. Poirot has some fabulous books and his are definitely the better TV shows. I enjoy Susan Elizabeth Phillips though some of her earlier books have some ick factor issues.

  23. I usually try to stay away from netgalley if I don't want to requets anything, because when I am on there I'll always find a bok that catches my eye and I ended up requesting it.

  28. What a nice week for you between reading and celebrating birthdays. The biographies of almost famous women is appealing to me, for the same reason you mentioned. 31. There are so many things here I like: Great Expectations - It really is such a good book, but if classics aren't your thing. Well, you'll have to see. Susan Elizabeth Phillips - The Great Escape isn't my favorite of hers, but it was still good. Her books can be long. Agatha Christie and Poirot!!! Love Poirot, although I've just seen all the film adaptations. I need to read the books. The Texan's Christmas - I grabbed that one. Same thing for me, I wasn't sure with the cover. I hope we both love it! Thanks for stopping by and have a fabulous week!

    1. Definitely keeping my fingers crossed on The Texan's Christmas. I really enjoyed her previous books. I just finished the SEP and enjoyed it. Probably wasn't a favorite but it was a good listen. The Poirot film adaptations are pretty close and Suchet is the most Poirot person anyone could be so you'll have a good visual when you give one of his books a try!
