Friday Fives - 5 Hobbies I Really Wish I Did

I'm taking a bit of a break from my usual Friday Linkups to try something a little different.  I'm in a list making kind of mood so I thought I'd start making random five lists.  Sometimes they'll be bookish other weeks not so much.  This is a not so much.  I don't really have hobbies.  I enjoy reading and do like to bake and am a great stress shopper but there are so many things I'd like to be able to do that I either can't or haven't taken the time to learn.

1.  Quilting - I love the history of quilting and the idea of collecting pretty fabrics and arranging them in different patterns.  I love reading books where they quilt but so far I have neither the patience or the fine motor skills to actually do it.

2.  Knitting - I love sweaters and what not but mostly I can't quite get my head around how knitting work so it kind of seems like a witchcraft way to make sweaters and socks.

3.  Photography - I would love to be able to take really gorgeous photos but have never taken the time to learn how to really use my camera or how to set up lighting and whatnot.

4.  Running - I love the idea of running and I'd love the calorie burn but I've done enough damage to my lower joints that running doesn't seem to work for me.  I've tried a few times and done various different methods but have never been able to maintain it.  I'm relatively in shape but running is not for me.

5.  Painting - I'm not artistic.  I can see something in my head but I can never make my hands come anywhere close to getting it on the page.  My dad's wife has started painting and gets so much joy from it and it really appeals to me but I'm afraid I'd just end up getting really frustrated.

What hobbies do you have?  Do you have any you wish you had but either don't or can't do them?

  1. What a great list! Like you, I sure wish I could draw, but I always see stickmen in my future(lol) I've run before while in the Air Force, but definitely not now. I absolutely wish that I could knit or crochet. Some of the cool designs that people come up with are truly amazing. Hope you're doing well and Happy Friyay! RO

  2. I have tried all of these, and I love doing each, even though I'm not good at any of them. I prefer to walk, rather than run. I have quilted in the past, but I still have one quilt I've been working on for...fifteen years.

  3. I do quilt and Knit and sew. I learned sewing as a child in 4-H but took up quilting as an adult. I love every craft I try however. So the time constraints mean I don't do them as much as I want. Before COVID, I went to a weekly quilting group. The woman who held it cooked us dinner. She had multiple sewing machines and irons and equipment. I hope we can do it again one day.

  4. I do quilt and knit. These days I don't knit much. Quilting really doesn't need too many fine motor skills. And the fabric as you say is so much fun. You have time yet, life is busy for you at the moment, but maybe in the future. I used to dream once of making quilts like you. I'd watch videos on you tube etc. for hours before I started. so like I just watched videos for about three or so years. My first quilts weren't that flash but it's a learning. A word of warning, it can get expensive! I hope when the time is right you give it a go.

  5. Great post, Katherine. I took a knitting class at my local yarn shop about 15 years ago and really took to it. But with Covid the shop is open for purchasing yarn only. No classes, etc. I can't wait for things to go back to somewhat normal.

  7. I am an avid knitter (and spinner), but the rest of these are hobbies I wish I could do, as well. Well, perhaps not running, but maybe hiking. I do take photos, but then I never DO anything with them! And I can sew, but I've never really gotten into it as a hobby.

  8. I power walk (fast walk) carrying small dumbells when my body isn't in an EDS cycle. It really is a good workout. 🚶

I'm with you on knitting. Confusing. That's why I crochet. It's much easier. I still have dreams of learning to knit, there's a group that meets at my library once a week and I hear they are really helpful to beginners. ☺

We made a quilt as a group project when I was in 4-H. It was fun as a group activity, but I don't think it's something I would like doing on my own. 😛

Do they have a paint and sip place in your area? I hear it's fun. 🎨

I crochet and embroider, that's pretty much it. I do sort of think of baking cookies and cupcakes as a hobby if I'm decorating them, though. 🍰
