This Week in Reading - April 28

It's Sunday Post time!  This is hosted by the awesome Caffeinated Book Reviewer and gives us all a chance to recap our week.  I'm also linking up with the Sunday Salon now hosted by Deb over at Readerbuzz

What I Got:

The Long Call by Ann Cleeves - I've been wanting to read Ann Cleeves for ages so I'm excited to try this first book in a new series.  (Publisher)

And Then They Were Doomed by Elizabeth Kane Buzzelli - I've enjoyed the first two books in this series but honestly, even if I hadn't, there was no way I could pass up a cozy mystery with a title that's a spin on an Agatha Christie title. (NetGalley)

The Right Sort of Man by Allison Montclair - This is a historical set in post-World War II London.  There's a murder, a matchmaking agency, and amateur sleuths.  (Publisher)

Summer by the Tides by Denise Hunter - A women's fiction-y type book with a beach house, a missing relative, and characters packing up a house while sorting through their issues is pretty much a book that was written for me!  (Blog Tour)

Currently:

Reading:  The Printed Letter Bookshop by Katherine Reay and Dying for Devil's Food by Jenn McKinlay

Listening:  I just finished Sense and Sensibility by Jane Austen and am just starting Al Capone Does My Shirts by Gennifer Choldenko
Watching: I'm caught up on MacGyver and am now watching the Magnum PI reboot.  It's definitely not as good as the original but it entertaining and predictable enough I can have it on as background noise.

Off the Blog:

This week was pretty quiet.  We are less than a month from the end of school which means we are seriously dragging in the mornings.  Throw in a hefty does of allergies and the Tornado is not fun to get out of bed every morning.  We are all counting down the days!  The summer is going to be pretty crazy but I'm looking forward to not having to get up early every day.

We have started having regular movie night with a heavy lean on Disney movies.  So far we've watched Wreck It Ralph, Coco, Frozen, Inside Out, and in a non-Disney turn The Chronicles of Narnia: Voyage of the Dawn Treader.  What are your favorite family friendly movies?

  1. The Magnum PI reboot has me seriously nostalgia-ing for the old Magnum show. I should watch that! And The Long call looks promising!

I can't wait for summer break! And ooh Voyage of the Dawn Treader- I don't think I saw that one!

  2. Less than a month away from the end of school? Time is going by way to fast. Here schools are still going till July or August.
I love Disney movies. How fun to have a regular movie night! That's definitely something we should try.
Have a great week and happy reading!

  3. The school year speeds by! Your reading looks like its swinging alone. My recent movie was Moana that I watched and thoroughly enjoyed.

  4. Lots of interest books on your lists. I've only watched the 1st Magnum P.I. it was almost a carbon copy of the Tom Selleck original series in it's feel and characters - easy watching, no brain needed - and I will watch more but I hope they don't mess with the Higgins/Magnum relationship as she's female.

  5. Movie night sounds fun! I should start something like that at home. And Then They Were Doomed caught my attention with your AC reference.

  6. I remember struggling with my son when it came close to the end of the year, and can relate. I watched On the Basis of Sex, the story of Ruth Bader Ginsburg, and I was impressed, shocked and saddened by all she went through when she started law school. What I loved even more is that she had a husband who was super supportive, and clearly loved his wife. It wasn't a romance movie, but the undertones of their amazing relationship was just fantastic. Hope your day is amazing! Hugs...RO

  8. Crikey - you are counting down to the end of the school year... and our children have just returned to school to start the summer term! I'm interested to see that you have the new series by Anne Cleves - I've read a few of her books and always enjoyed them. I hope you like it.

  9. I see we both got the same emails this week...lol. :) I enjoyed the MacGyver reboot okay but got behind on it and haven't watched it any since, not tried the Magnum PI one as he just doesn't look the part to me and it was one of my favorite shows growing up.

Favorite family friendly movies - Big, Goonies, Flubber and Parent Trap (all older movies of course...lol)

    Have a great week!

  11. My kids only have 19 days left of school. They're super excited. Me? Not so much! Ha ha.

I got THE LONG CALL as well. I've been enjoying Ann Cleeves' first series, so I'm excited to see how this new one is similar/different. I also love the Al Capone series. It's interesting and fun and touching.

Favorite family friendly movies? Anastasia (cartoon), The Lego Movie 2 (it's better than the first one), the Toy Story movies, and my kids all LOVE Flushed Away.

  13. Your list of Disney movies are all my favorites. Have you tried Brave? It is one of those movies I don't mind rewatching repeatedly. I hope you have a great week ahead.

  14. Hard to believe the end of the school year is only a month away! For me anyway...you're more than ready, I'm sure. How did you the audio of Sense and Sensibility? It's been quite a while since I read that one.

  15. We are doing our final countdown for the end of the school year. My daughter will have her last high school class in about 3 weeks. I was really tempted by the Cleeves book but didn't grab it since I am already so far behind. I love the idea of movie night. I hope you have a great allergy free week!

  20. A cozy with a spin on an Agatha Christie title. I have got to check that out! And I've been meaning to try Ann Cleeves books. I remember how great it was when summer break arrived. My son is older now and I bet he misses those breaks. LOL

  21. I'm with you about early mornings, especially now it's Daylight Savings Time. Ugh. 😴

I feel so bad about everyone and their allergies. Baz has been having a hard time of it, too. I get a bit of it in July, my grandmother called it "rose fever", but I only get itchy eyes and nose for a couple of weeks. 😪,

    Have a wonderful week. 🌞
