This Week in Reading - September 23

It's Sunday Post time!  This is hosted by the awesome Caffeinated Book Reviewer and gives us all a chance to recap our week.

What I Got:

Premeditated Peppermint (An Amish Candy Shop Mystery #3) by Amanda Flower -   This cover is so cute and it looks like a fun.  I've been wanting to read Amanda Flower forever so I'm excited about this one.  (Publisher)

The Pint of No Return by Ellie Alexander - I love Alexander's Bake Shop series so I'm super curious to see what this series involving a microbrewer.  (Publisher)

The Dead Ringer by M.C. Beaton - I really enjoy the Agatha Raisin series.  I don't think I'd want to spend anytime with her in real life but I like seeing what she's gotten herself involved in. (Publisher)

The Secrets We Carry (Butternut Lake #6) by Mary McNear - I've been wanting to read this series since I first came across it so when I got the chance to review it I jumped at the chance!  (Blog Tour)

Currently:

Reading:  Seasons of Wonder by RaeAnne Thayne and to help balance out the Christmas sweetness I'm reading Pale as Death by Heather Graham.

Listening:  I just finished Written in Red by Anne Bishop which surprised me with how much I enjoyed it and am now reading She Stopped for Death by Elizabeth Kane Buzzelli.  I haven't gotten very far into it but I really enjoyed the first one.

Watching:  We watched the movie Giant with Rock Hudson, James Dean and Elizabeth Taylor this weekend and enjoyed it.

Off the Blog:

Thanks for all the good wishes regarding streaming my aunt's wedding.  We were able to get it to work so my grandparents were able to watch her wedding.  I've decided I'm a big fan of this version of watching weddings.  You stay home and can watch from your couch without all the awkward small talk.  It's nice.

Emma was in a minor fender bender later this week.  She was stopped at a light when the car behind her decided to accelerate right into her.  The damage to her car was minimal and it wasn't a big deal until she started feeling really out of it and was sick to her stomach.  Long story short she somehow ended up with a concussion from how hard her head slammed into the back of the seat.  I really didn't know it was possible to do that!  She did end up getting checked out and is okay though has a bit of a headache but the week ended up being far more stressful than I expected.  What was kind of funny is that the girl who rear-ended her is in the class that Emma is student teaching this semester.  This kind of thing is what's hard about having kids hours away from you.  She's 21 and has a great support system where she is and is very responsible but it's not quite the same!

Next week I've got some volunteering at the Tornado's school and am going to try and get caught up on my visiting.  I've been terrible at revisiting Sunday Post commenters and really just Sunday Posts in general between being out of town and being sick and other drama but I'm going to try and fix that.

  1. Ooh glad the streaming worked! And yes that sounds like a pretty nice way to watch a wedding, I agree!

The Pint of No Return ha ha- love that title. :)

Glad to hear your daughter is okay, although sorry to hear about the concussion. I imagine it's hard when they leave and things happen and you're not nearby. It's tough being a parent! Anyway glad it wasn't a more serious accident. Have a good week ahead!

  2. So sorry about Emma's accident. I was rear-ended at a traffic light a few years ago, and both my daughter and I had whiplash that required physical therapy.

Your books look good...Premeditated Peppermint has such a delightful cover.

I love Sophie Hannah's books, but haven't read any of her Agatha Christie ones.

Enjoy your week, and thanks for sharing.

  3. Good that the streaming worked out and you got to see the wedding with your grandparents. Ah yes all that Christmas reading. Strangely I don't really mind it even though the real deal is still a few months away!

  4. Oh wow, it's too bad she ended up with a concussion, especially from something like that - so unlucky! I guess she got jolted. I'm glad she's okay now.
I hope your next week is much more peaceful!

  5. Sorry about her accident. Sometimes the pain or issues doesn't come about until much later because you are all ramped up from the accident itself. I hope she is feeling better now.

Don't be sorry about not visiting, it happens to all of us at some point...Life just gets in the way! :)

Enjoy all your new cozy books!
Have a great week, Katherine! Happy Reading! ox

  6. I would have never thought you could get a concussion from hitting the back of the headrest either! Poor Emma. I'm so sorry for YOUR stress, too. Poor, momma!! The last thing you ever need to worry about is stressing about commenting. Trust me, your blogging buddies will always be there for you, whether you have time to comment or not :) BTW - Top Ten Tuesday looks like a good one next week!!

  7. I'm glad your daughter is ok after her scare. Idiot drivers don't care about hurting innocent people-probably bloody playing with their phone or something. The nearest I get to seasonal reading for Christmas is horror books about monsters and killers in blizzards!

  8. So glad you were able to stream the wedding, Katherine. I remember we tried to do that a few years ago for a nephew's wedding in Germany. It didn't work out, but I think the apps to do things like that have gotten much better.

I'm going to check out your reviews for next week since I want to find some Christmas themed books. I'm glad Emma wasn't hurt worse.

    Have a great week!

  9. You got several interesting books!!! I am glad your daughter is okay and it was just a minor accident, I am sure it's hard not being there in the same city with her when things like that happens.

Have a great week and happy reading,

  10. Streaming the wedding seems a better way to attend a wedding. Except for the fact that we will miss the food and drinks and dressing up. I will completely sold if we are allowed to dress up and get fine food delivered, yet be away from people.

  11. Yay for wedding streaming! It's nice it was able to work out so they could be apart of it.

Sorry about your daughter's accident and hopefully she will feel better soon. Concussions are no fun.

    Have a great week!

  12. It is so difficult to be away from your kids, especially when you feel like they need your presence.

Enjoy your books, especially the Agatha. I adore her.

  14. I am so glad Emma will be okay after the car accident, but what a scare! I am glad to hear she has a strong support system where she is, but I know it must still be hard on you. I am glad to hear that streaming the wedding worked out.

Premeditated Peppermint is on my TBR too. :-) Looks like you have some good reading ahead of you!

I hope you enjoy volunteering in Tornado's class this week! Have a great week, Katherine.

  15. I'm sorry that happened to your daughter! I'm sure it was a scary experience for everyone. We never want our kids to get hurt -- it doesn't matter how old they are. I'm glad she's okay!

I haven't heard of Premeditated Peppermint, but the title is fun!

  16. I'm glad she's okay now. I was in an accident while barely moving. A car u-turned in front of me. I was sore for days from the safety belt. Even a small collision can be dangerous. Loving those cozies and off the check out a couple:)

  18. Yay for the wedding streaming! 💐

Very scary about Emma! You are right; it's still nerve racking even when you know they are being well taken care of out of town. 😞

    Have a wonderful week. 🌞

  20. I am so glad that your grandparents were able to see the wedding. Streaming does sound like the way to go! I hate to hear about Emma's accident. It is scary when a kid is hurt and away from home. Enjoy all of your new books and have a great week!

  22. Was she turning right to go to the used book store? What's with people accelerating into a stopped car?

  23. I'm so glad Emma is ok but I know what you mean about kids being so far from home. Two of mine went to college six hours from home. Not easy when they need you fast.
So glad the streaming of the wedding worked!!
    Have a good week!

  24. OMGoodness! Poor baby. I can imagine how worried you and the family must have been. Perhaps the driver accidentally stepped on the wrong pedal? Slow down, other ppl and pay the heck attention!

  25. I'd love to attend weddings via streaming! So glad that it worked for your family. You've actually just given me an idea for my own... :)

  28. Ha! Yeah Agatha would be a lot to handle in real life but I enjoy her from afar. Hope the kiddo is feeling better soon. Scary when you can't be right there to help.
