This Week in Reading - September 21

The Sunday Post is hosted by Kimba at the Caffeinated Book Reviewer and is where we get the chance to talk about what's going on off the blog, on the blog and what books I managed to acquire despite vowing I wasn't going to get any new books.

What I Got:

So I was being really good and had only gotten one book and then in a little game of sabotage the NetGalley ratio helped along by Le French and Kensington publishers I went on a bit of a spree:

Louisiana Fever by D.J. Donaldson (provided by publisher) - This was listed as a CSI meets the "Big Easy" and with that tag line I couldn't resist.  I love New Orleans and I love CSI so I'm excite to see where this one goes.

Crossing the Line by Frederique Molay - There's a jewel heist in Paris and a message in a tooth in a severed head.  Oh and it's Christmas.  In Paris.  How could I pass that up?

The Shiro Project by David Khara - This is an international thriller with ties to World War 2.  I'm a little concerned because it's a translation but I'm keeping my fingers crossed.

The Ripper's Wife by Brandy Purdy - The Ripper story as seen through his wife's eyes.  She's not quite the heiress her mother said she was.  He has a mistress, an arsenic addiction and a temper.  What starts as a shipboard fairy tale romance is doomed to fail.  Is this the time to admit that I've watched all those History and Discovery Channel documentaries on Jack the Ripper?

Going Home by Stacy Finz - Two people looking to heal from past wounds.  One of them happens to be renovating a Bed and Breakfast.  I can't pass up home renovations.

If the Shoe Kills by Lynn Cahoon - The third mystery in the Tourist trap series.  Now I just need to read the 2nd one!

Currently:

Reading: Life is Sweet by Elizabeth Bass and a biography on Coco Chanel called Mademoiselle by Rhonda Garelick for reviews next week.

Listening:  I was planning on listening to Erica Bauermeister's The Lost Art of Mixing but some other books came up first.  Now I'm listening to Lissette's List by Susan Vreeland with Sleeping Beauty and Other Fairytales most likely next.  So far I'm enjoying Lissette's List though I wish the narrator wasn't quite so enthusiastic with her accents! I finished P.D. James' Shroud for a Nightingale and loved it.  I think I like James better in audio form.

Watching:  Not much because all the summer shows have ended and the fall ones haven't started.  I'm excited about NCIS and NCIS: New Orleans starting next week along with The Big Bang Theory, The Middle, Modern Family and How to Get Away with Murder.  Until then, inspired by Lola at Lola's Reviews J and I have started watching Star Trek: The Next Generation.  I had watched bits and pieces before but watching it in order has been fun.

Off the Blog:

Emma has started applying for colleges for next year.  Her first choice is 5 hours away and most likely will be where she's going.  Eleanor is only 2 hours away and we barely see her so I'm guessing we'll be seeing Emma on major holidays and that's about it.  Next year Paul will be applying and we'll go from a crazy crowded house to a single child house.  It will definitely be weird.

The Tornado had a stomach bug last weekend which he very kindly shared.  Luckily, he only shared it with me so we didn't have an entire house down.  It has put a hold on testing out some new cookbooks I've been wanting to try out.  Maybe next week!

We put up Halloween decorations this past weekend.  We kind of went for years without decorating for Halloween due to moving and kids ages and various other reasons.  Last year the Tornado was more into the Halloween thing so we did up decorating and he loved it.  As soon as he started seeing hints of Halloween stuff at the stores he was begging to get everything out.  I had kind of forgotten how much fun it was to get all decorated.  We've left the outside alone though - don't want to be the crazy house who decorates for Halloween in summer so we'll be the crazy house in secret!

  1. ST:TNG is good, catch re-runs sometimes on BBC America. Worf and O'Brien are my favorite characters. And Q. :D

I hope the Tornado is doing better, stomach bugs are miserable. I don't do Halloween decorations but I do have some autumn items I put out. I should do that. :D

Enjoy your books and just pretend that NetGalley ratio doesn't exist. :D

    1. I love Worf. He's definitely one of my favorite characters. I haven't come across O'Brien yet but we're still in season 1.
He was better pretty quickly. He's a tough one but stomach bugs are awful! I just kept trying to tell myself it was a way to jump start weight loss!

  2. I've seen a lot of Star Trek mentions lately, seems like people are checking out those older series which is kinda neat. Hope you enjoy, that sounds like fun.

We've had some sickness here too, but luckily nothing too bad. I like all the decorations for this time of year, we haven't put much out yet but it's been fun seeing all the stuff going up in the neighborhood.

    1. I've really been enjoying them. I've seen a lot of them but I've never really made an effort to sit down and watch them in order. It's definitely been fun. What did we do before Netflix?
We're generally pretty healthy as well. It's much better that way! I hate being sick!

  3. I love TNG, enjoy ! I don't know yet what it is to see your children move away from your house. but I guess you can feel both free (come on, they're a lot of work !), proud of their achievements and sad to see them all grown up and gone... Have a great reading week :)

    1. You've pretty much nailed the feelings! There's a lot of pride and there's a little sadness and it's definitely a little freer. I am looking forward to redoing their rooms once they have their own places!

  5. I see road trips on the horizon - some of the best mother-daughter times we had (Dad and I alternated). And surprises along the way in terms of what I thought she would like for a school and what she chose!
I was addicted to Star Trek, but missed a lot of the episodes so I watch now from time to time to see them.
Lots of books on your bedside table - a teetering pile, They all sound intriguing!

    1. I'm very curious to see how everything gets settled but it will be tough when she moves out. We barely see her as it is as she's busy with work and school and friends (as it should be) but I'm not sure I'm ready for her to be hours away!
I was never really addicted to Star Trek but I always enjoyed it when I watched them so it's been really fun to see what people loved about it. I've really been enjoying it!

  6. I cannot wait for How to Get Away With Murder...I think it's going to be an amazing show! Do you watch Shonda's other shows - Greys and Scandal? Talk about a monopoly on Thursday nights!!!

I'm trying really hard to stay off Netgalley until I get caught up! It's so easy to go overboard and request all the books there! Plus I still have a ton of books from BEA that I'm still trying to make my way through...I don't think I'll ever have a shortage of books...

    Have a great week!

    1. I don't but they're both on my list to watch - especially Scandal. I know people are crazy addicted to it so I can't wait to get to it.

It's definitely best to stay off Netgalley but it's so difficult! Probably most of us could stop buying books now and have enough to last a lifetime!

  7. The Ripper's Wife sounds interesting. I find those stories about him fascinating and that seems like a great twist to the story.

I am decorating next weekend. I have to admit I LOVE this time of year so I can decorate the house. It's so much fun and the kids think it's get to have all that spooky stuff in the house :)

Enjoy all your new reads and Have a great week!!!

I'm looking forward to The Ripper's Wife. I'm hoping it's good!

  8. Such a good post, and so much I want to comment on...but won't, or this will be a chapter :) Best of luck to your children in whatever they decide. My son is now 1 1/2 hr. away, and since he got his own car, he plans on coming home almost every weekend for at least a day. I only have one YA child left in the home now.

We don't have little kids at home, and live cross-country from my grandkids so we don't decorate for Halloween anymore except for putting out a lit jack o' lantern on the 31st to give out candy. I miss those fun times of scarecrows and cobwebs and pumpkins...

I will check out NCIS N.O. and Louisiana Fever since I also have a thing for that area, though the closet I got to it was FL. My youngest went there for a chorus trip years ago and shared video and it looked like fun. I also like Scandal and await How to Get Away with Murder.

The Ripper's Wife looks intriguing, and I have the first Lynn Cahoon book and should read it so I can move forward in this series. Enjoy your week!

    1. Eleanor is about 2 hours away but works a lot of weekends so only comes home sporadically. I have an idea that Emma will be home even less. Paul is talking about going to the university in town so we'll probably see him a lot more even if he isn't actually living here. I know once the Tornado is older we probably won't do much. We don't live in a neighborhood that has much trick or treating so I'm afraid it might seem a bit pointless.
I used to spend a lot of time in New Orleans though I haven't been back since Katrina. It's a wonderful city though. It definitely has enough character to really drive a show or book. I'm looking forward to starting Scandal eventually. I enjoyed the Lynn Cahoon book and hope you do as well!

  10. Good luck with the college application process. We've been through it a few times and it was different with each child, but always stressful. Thankfully, they all made good decisions.

I've got my fall decorations up now, but wait until October for anything Halloween themed. Noticed one house this week that already has ghosts hanging from the trees... I applaud your decision not to be "that house" ;-)

Lots of good books on your plate now, too. Have a great week, Katherine!

    1. This is the 2nd time and it's definitely different. Logically I know that she's not going to have any trouble getting into where she wants but it will still be nice to actually have the acceptance.

So far we're not "that house" but like you we deem October acceptable and then the outside stuff can be up. Until then the Halloween stuff is hidden inside!

  11. What a great week you've had and it looks like you've got even more good stuff coming :) I like the sound of The Ripper's Wife -- it seems that the women behind the men are being featured more in books these days!

PS I have 3 giveaways happening right now. 2 books + a Blogger template (and there are lots of design choices)! Here's the link: http://guiltlessreading.blogspot.ca/2014/09/bloggiesta-blogger-template-giveaway.html

    1. Thanks for the info! Generally I have no problem with translated work but the last book translated book I read I didn't enjoy at all. I think it was most likely book I didn't enjoy and the translation had little to do with it.

  13. Louisiana Fever looks interesting. I don't read much of that type of book anymore, but I used to be really into them. A New Orleans setting is always great!

We don't have kids so we don't really decorate for Halloween, but I love driving around looking at other people's decorations. Some people really go all out. There's one house here that does, and then doesn't do anything for Christmas, which seems unusual. But maybe they don't celebrate.

    ReplyDelete

    1. I do love a New Orleans setting. I used to spend a lot of time there so I always enjoy visiting it in fiction.

I knew someone who went all out for Halloween but barely did anything for Christmas. She mostly liked being different I think and Halloween is a bit more of a free for all than the traditional Christmas decorations.

  14. I've got Louisiana Fever and If the Show Kills sounds fun. I've been really good until recently. Now I seem to have grabbed a bunch of books.
Not sure if I'll decorate for Halloween this year. I always do but a lots happened and I can't seem to get with it.
I'm dying to continue The Big Bang Theory. That scene at the train station is killing me. What is Sheldon going to do? And I'm also anxious to see what happens on The Walking Dead!

  16. TNG! Oh man, I'm a huge Trekkie. And TNG is by far my favourite cast. Especially the later seasons. So so good. Have you watch DS9? I definitely recommend watching it when you've made your way through TNG. There's so cross over and when Warf shows up in season 4 the show really takes off. <3

  20. You've got some good books there! I thought about the Ripper book - the case has always interested me - but I'm not comfortable with books where the wife finds out she's married to a killer. They make me really edgy for some reason. The idea that you could misjudge someone that badly, I guess. I've requested the Lynn Cahoon but I'm still waiting to hear whether I'll get it. The first two were fun!

Sorry to hear about your stomach bug - I hope you and the Tornado are feeling better! And it's hard to only see your child on major holidays, but at least we have cell phones, Facebook and texting now! I remember when I went to college, I could only call my parents (collect) for emergencies or on weekends when it was cheaper.

The last few years, I didn't decorate for Halloween until the day before! I hope I can do better this year, and I think it's great you and the Tornado are enjoying the decorations early. :-)

We're both back up and fully functional. The good thing was this wasn't one of those bugs where you feel bad. I just had no interest in eating. I'm definitely grateful for texting and cell phones and all that. Communication is so much easier!

  21. I am so glad shows are coming back on! I can't wait to check out the New shows (Gotham, Foever, Scorpion, NCIS: NO and many others..lol) I can't wait for my regulars to come on like NCIS, Sleepy Hollow, Bones, Castle, etc. My favorite part of this time of the year..no more not having anything to watch..lol.

If I let the netgalley ration bother me I would be in tears..lol. I must catch up and I really do try and stay away..those darn emails do not help!!! :( Louisiana Fever sounds great..makes me want to go and check out Netgalley...see what you did..hehehe. :)

  29. I always find it curious to hear how you have to apply for colleges. Here you just choose one and sign-up for the study you want and unless it's a medicine you probably get accepted without any issues.

It sound fun to decorate your house for Halloween, here in the Netherlands Halloween isn't such a big thing yet, although it seems to grow in popularity each year.
