This Week in Reading - July 14

It's Sunday Post time!  This is hosted by the awesome Caffeinated Book Reviewer and gives us all a chance to recap our week.

What I Got:


The Bookish Life of Nina Hill by Abbi Waxman - I've been wanting to read this author since her last few books but I couldn't pass up this one.  (Audible)

Under Currents by Nora Roberts - I've actually taken a pass on Roberts' most recent books but this one sounds good and I've been enjoying romantic suspense in audio.  (Audible)

Molded 4 Murder by J.C. Eaton - I love this series and honestly I didn't even read the blurb.  (NetGalley)

Currently:

Reading: No More Time by Suzanne M. Trauth and Mrs. McGinty's Dead by Agatha Christie

Listening: I finally finished Suddenly One Summer by Julie James and am just starting What We Find by Robyn Carr

Watching:  Still not much other than an occasional crime show.

Off the Blog:

Nothing new.  More rental house madness but the end (fingers crossed) is in sight.  We are heading down to Birmingham for a post wedding party this weekend.  More physical therapy but the end is in sight there as well. 

On another note I'm unofficially doing the Modern Mrs. Darcy Reading challenge this year and one of the categories is to read a book recommended by someone with great taste so could you recommend a book?  Any genre, old, new, whatever - what is a book that you always recommend?

    Have you read The Storied Life of A.J. Fikry? It's adult lit and it's about a bookshop owner. That's my recommendation. 👍✨

    There are a couple that have always stayed with me - and I'm making a point of not choosing books in my favourite SFF genre with folks I know don't read it... 'The Go-Between' by L.P. Hartley and 'My Cousin Rachel' by Daphne du Maurier - best example of a circular ending that I've ever read. Have a great week, Katherine.

    The Bookish Life of Nina Hill is cropping up a lot at the moment! I hope you enjoy it.

    Glad the physical therapy is drawing to a close, does that mean the pain has reduced significantly/went away?

    I haven't heard of this Darcy challenge hmmm. Do you like Urban Fantasy because I can't recommend the Dresden File series by Jim Butcher enough especially on audio (though I know some don't like the first couple on audio but I loved them) but either reading or listening you really should try it! :)

    I got Molded 4 Murder too! I love that series!

    So nice to hear about what's going on in your world, Katherine. Glad your physical therapy is coming to an end and I hope it helps your issues. Recommending a book - well, I always recommend Louise Penny's series for fiction and Being Mortal by Atul Gawande for non-fiction. The second is not a happy book, but it's certainly one that is thought provoking. Have a good week!

    I'm seeing the Bookish Nina Hill popping up everywhere! I hope it's awesome. And good luck with the tail end of the rental house stuff- I hope all goes great.

    Let's see- a recommendation. I'll go with The Shark Club by Ann Kidd Taylor. I think it's great!

    For a long time, Major Pettigrew’s Last Stand was my go-to rec. t’s a wonderful, charming British story.

    I happily completed my physical therapy a couple of weeks ago...and now I'm counting down to my surgery.

    I also got The Bookish Life of Nina Hill and can't wait to read it.

    I'm going to jump in here with a couple of recs. off the top of my head. For a nonfiction, and maybe it can satisfy 2 categories- Tuesdays with Morrie by Mitch Albom. For fantasy, The Thinking Woman's Guide to Magic by Emily Croy Barker. For a light mystery/procedural, any of Hank Phillippi Ryan's books. For high-intensity suspense, any stand-alone by Kevin O'Brien. For a PG rated romance, any one by Luanne Rice.I could go on... For a stand-alone historical fiction in a small town, Ordinary Grace. For international crime procedurals, a Tana French book.

    I was lucky enough to win an ARC of Under Currents on Instagram so I'll get to read it eventually, otherwise I would have listened to it via Audible. All the best with a book recommendation, doing that challenge too, I think I chose one from a blog review and it was highly recommended. I'll have to check to see... or maybe fog brain and I haven't done that one yet! Possible!

    My two all time favorite books are Sarah's Key by Tatiana de Rosnay and The Language of Flowers by Vanessa Diffenbaugh. I love your blog!

    Given your love of mysteries, I’ll recommend a few books by Australian authors you should be able to find ..The Dry by Jane Harper, A Dissection of Murder by Felicity Young, or Hush Hush by Candice Fox and James Patterson

    I second the recommendation of Louise Penny's books from Kay. I can't remember if you've read them or not, but they're great. Another book I've read and loved lately is THE SOLACE OF WATER by Elizabeth Byler Younts. It's a serious literary fiction novel, but it's readable and poignant and very underrated. I loved it.
