This Week in Reading - February 12

It's Sunday Post time!  This is hosted by the awesome Caffeinated Book Reviewer and gives us all a chance to recap our week.

What I Got:

Nothing!!  I didn't get any books and don't even have an requests pending!  This is very exciting.  We are going to a movie this afternoon (Saturday) which happens to be right next door to a bookstore which we'll probably go into and there's a distinct chance I might pick something up but that'll go on next week's list so it doesn't count!

Currently:

Reading: Still reading Still Life by Louise Penny and The Viscount Who Loved Me by Julia Quinn.  As well I have a fun cozy mystery going called Blogging is Murder by Gillian Baker

Listening: Yes, My Accent is Real by Kunal Nayyar (Raj on The Big Bang Theory) and absolutely LOVING it!  I should get my notice that it's my turn for The Woman in Cabin 10 by Ruth Ware any day so that will be next.

Watching:  I'm finally getting around to watching the latest Sherlock season and not sure what to think of it.  Because of the audio book I'm listening to I've started watching early episodes of The Big Bang Theory and have really been enjoying them.

Off the Blog:

We are officially recovered from whatever bug that hit the house last week.  I don't think I felt quite right until earlier this week.  I don't get sick very often but this definitely knocked me for a loop!  One good thing is I'm really appreciating being healthy again!

I had a follow up appointment with my allergist this week which was interesting.  In my allergy testing back in November I discovered that I was allergic to cats which at the time wasn't a big issue since we had just had to put our older cat to sleep and were currently cat-less.  I have discovered that when I'm staying in the same house as a cat I'll be fine for a day or so but after that my eyes swell up and I'm miserable.  The problem is that we've promised the Tornado a kitten and I don't want to disappoint him but I also don't want to be miserable.  Apparently the solution is allergy shots started off with a "rush" procedure which is basically a whole lot of shots in one day.   Has anyone had allergy shots before?  Any side effects or problems?  I'm not a big fan of shots but it sounds like the best option.

We're not really big Valentine's Day celebrators but I do like to make a special meal for the Tornado.  I found a recipe for heart shaped calzones that look really fun and I thought I'd make a chocolate cream pie with Valentine's Day sprinkles.  This weekend we're decorating a box for school for their Valentine's Day party Tuesday and I have to put together Valentine's for his class.  I remember being a kid and Valentine's were just the cards but when the older kids were little they had to have a treat attached and now it seems like everyone puts together little bags.

I'm trying to get caught up on all the blog stuff I've left unattended for an embarrassingly long time.  This week I'm hoping to get back in the habit of replying to comments and am planning on starting today.  I've thought about using Disquis or something for comments.  Has anyone tried it with Blogger?  Any tips or hints?

  1. I hope you like The Woman in Cabin 10. I thought it was pretty good. And glad you're all feeling better. there's a lot of stuff going around! Good luck with the allergy thing too- i know family members have had allergy testing but not the actual shots for relief, so I don't really know. I hope it works though!

I've thought about using Disqus too...

  2. I didn't know you could get allergy shots to prevent you from being allergic to a cat. Could you perhaps negotiate with the Tornado for a dog instead? ;-)

I'm glad you're all feeling better though!

And I hope you enjoy the moving AND the book shopping!

  3. I like that empty bookshelf!

I enjoyed Still Life and The Woman in Cabin 10. I'm curious about Blogging Is Murder.

Thanks for sharing, glad you're all feeling better, and enjoy the week.

  5. Yay, I'm proud of you for not getting any new books! Haha, isn't funny how we get excited when we get more books but we also get excited when we don't get any?

Glad to hear your family is feeling better. And aww, the heart shaped calzones an the pie sound so cute (and delicious)! Haha, I totally forgot about what it was like on V day in elementary school. When I was a kid, it was some cards and some treats, but wow, little bags of stuff? Celebrating V day is getting complicated and expensive lol.

  6. Glad you are feeling better. What movie are you going to see? I have The Woman in Cabin 10 on request at the library too but it's been forever - I may just end up buying it.

  7. Yay for being healthy again! I looked at the Woman in Cabin 10 the other week, wondering if I would like it.

  8. I think I got all the books for you this week...lol. OMG did I go a bit overboard...sighs. Oh well, hopefully I can keep myself out of the books this week. :) I never celebrate Valentines Day cause I am single and to me it's just another day. Though some chocolate pie would be nice...lol. :)

Hope the shots work for you, I hate shots I am not sure if I could do that for a cat...lol. See if he would like a ferret instead or something...hehehe. :)

Hope you have a great week!

  9. I did ok with book getting this week but I did read a lot so it was ok to get a bunch of books :)
I am allergic to cats and we have one, lol. I am only allergic to her saliva. So when she licks my arm, I'll break out in hives but she's worth it :) My daughter loves cats and wants another but my allergies only allow one cat at a time. Plus Buttons would kill us if we put another animal in this house.

I hope you have a great week, Katherine! Happy Reading! ox

  12. I have the same issue about comments. It is my on bugbear with Blogger. If someone replies to me on Wordpress I see it. I think if you use Google+ it can work but maybe the person getting the comment would have to have a gmail. I have wondered about Disqus too so will watch these comments to see if anyone has any tips.

  13. I got a few library books this week, but no new books for my shelves and it feels great. Sounds like Tornado is going to have a fun Valentines! I'm going to have the kids decorate paper bags for our valentine's party - but yeah you're right. They do bring little treats to go with their valentine's now.

  14. I'm glad the bug has finally hit the road to plague somewhere else. I have read the flu bug is really bad this year. How exciting to have an empty bookshelf where any possibilities are waiting for you to open. I wish I could do that with my worsted and bulky yarn, LOL.

  15. So glad you guys are feeling better. This has been a tough season for illness. I have bad allergies but have never gone the route of allergy shots. Mine are for cedar and ragweed, so I avoid being out of doors much from Sept-Mar. I walk on an indoor track and take lots of allergy meds.

Hope you enjoying STILL LIFE. Making little Valentine's bags sounds fun and a lot of work. Everything has gotten more and more it seems with kids and school and such. Have a good week!

  16. I have disqus, easy peasy to get going with it, have used it for years. I recommend it for commenting back and forth.

Glad you are all feeling better. If you are allergic to cats: my SIL is and they have a cat plus one of her daughter's cats living with her, plus they have 2 long-haired chihuahuas. She got the shots a long time ago, but now I think she takes prescription medicine instead of shots just when needed for flare-ups (like when she visits me with all the pet hair I can't keep up with). As people get older sometimes allergies get better or worse. Hers aren't as severe as when she was in her 20s. Good luck with it.

I visited the author page of the blogging cozy you're reading and sent for the free first chapter. Thought I'd give it a try based on your rec and her pleasant website. By the way, Louise Penny's series starts out a bit slow, but once you get invested in the characters and town you will most likely enjoy it more.

    Have a great week reading.

  19. I haven't popped over to your blog for a long time. It is nice to "see" you again. Talk to your vet. I think there are somethings you can do for the cat to make less allergenic for you. Worth a try. My Sunday Salon

  20. It's good to hear you are feeling better! Your empty shelf is good news for me because I often run to Netgalley or Goodreads if I like a book you received lol. The Valentines meal sounds really cute. Since it is during the week we'll be ordering take out lol. I hope you have a great week!

  21. I grew up with cats in the house my whole youth. In high school I found out I was allergic to them. Did allergy shots for a couple of years and never had a problem with them. Unfortunately, when I went off to college, I stopped doing them and in no time at all, I could hardly stand to be in a house where a cat lived. Five years ago, we inherited my son's two cats. I had to slowly wean myself to being around them. Now I'm fine most of the time, but our big tom cat is a snuggler and I'm his favorite snugglee and sometimes that does mean I'll spend the better part of twenty-four hours blowing my nose. I've been wondering about seeing if allergy shots would even work now that they are in the house. I'll be looking forward to see what you decide!

  22. I listened to Still Life - really liked the narrator.

  23. I am in a reading stall, but such is life. lol I am like the worst person ever about replying to comments on my blog, so I am so not the person to say. I prefer when I can reply to the person via email because otherwise they have to actually care enough to come back and see what I said. lol

  24. I am glad you are feeling better. Valentine's is no biggie in my house but I do remember trying to do something nice for my kids when they were younger. Congrats on no new books...that is hard to do!

  25. I am glad everyone in the house is feeling better, Katherine. I was sorry to hear everyone had been sick. I've never had allergy shots before. I am allergic to cats though--and have two. I'm actually used to my cats and so they don't really bother me--it's when I visit someone else with cats that it gets to me. I know not everyone is as lucky though. Or it could be a result of me taking allergy medicine every day . . .

A chocolate cream pie for Valentine's Day sounds so good. I wonder if I should suggest it to my husband for tonight . . . I don't know if he has anything planned. I just got him a giant KitKat. We don't really do anything big, I'm afraid. My daughter's getting a book and a stuffed bear. :-)

I hope you have a great week, Katherine! I understand about playing catch up. I feel like that's all I do these days.

  26. I am supposed to have allergy shots, but my serum will cost nearly $5,000. No, thanks! Supposed to have several shots weekly for the first 3 months or so and then it lessens to weekly. Or at least, that was the plan my allergist set up for me that I am doing without. I also found out I am allergic to dogs. Allergist went on a rant about how she could not be in my bedroom and absolutely not in my bed. The man and I walked out and looked at each other in the hallway, and he asked me if I was going to listen to her, and I said, "Fat chance!"

  27. I love using Disqus because it notifies people of only the replies on their comment. On bigger Blogger blogs I never hit the "notify me" button unless I am there really late commenting and there won't be too many more comments left. I get a lot more return replies since I have had Disqus.

I think the other moms hated me when Baz was in elementary school because I used to buy the big red cups (college party cups) and fill them with candy, and a red pencil with a big fancy eraser topper. Ha ha. I love holidays with kids they are so much fun. XD
