My New TBR Jars

I watch a decent amount of Bookish YouTube and so many of them have TBR jars either with prompts or book titles.  I love an element of randomness and desperately wanted my own TBR jar.  While I don't have any spare jars I did find these 2 decorative boxes that were too pretty to throw away but I had never figured out what to do with them.

The first one is my Shelf TBR jar.  I took a whole bunch of index cards and wrote all the books on my shelves down.  If I had a series I just wrote the first one - or the next one I had to read - not the whole series.  It took a lot of time but I got a lot of audio book listening done and it was fun to explore my shelves.  I cut the index cards up into little slivers with one title one each one and spent a ridiculous amount of time folding them up.  Next time I'm looking for an actual book to read I just give the box a shake and pick a title.

The came the Audio Book TBR jar.  If I thought the Shelf one took awhile this one took a ridiculous amount of time.  It's at least double the size of the box for the Shelf titles and I have so many audio book titles saved in so many different platforms.  I did put a little symbol to show me what platform the book is on.  A lot of the Libby books will have to be placed on hold so when that happens I'll place that book on hold and pick another title.  I've already used this and have really been enjoying it!

I'm not really a mood reader but when I pick a book that I'm really not wanting to read than I'm going to use that as a sign that it's time for that book to come off my shelf.

Do you have any kind of random system to help you pick books?

  1. I love this, though I'm not sure I want to take the time to write/fold/etc. Glad you are enjoying it and, yes, I can see that it would help because picking the next book is sometimes quite hard. Especially when one has so, so many books - ha! Have a good week!

  2. Those boxes are too nice to throw away for sure! I love the owl. What I do is go to the bookshelf of unread and grab one. If I don't like it after trying to read it I donate to the little library.

  3. I love it! Especially those awesome boxes. I've done a TBR jar once years ago, but I only had a small jam jar to shove my paper slips in. Maybe that's why I never seemed to want to pull one out. ;D

  4. I am too lazy to do all the writing and folding. But I'm glad you found a system that works for you. I have mostly online organization. I use my Thrifty Thursday posts to read freebies I got. I have Goodreads shelf for all the freebies but I also have shelves for genres, since one can select multiple shelves I use the freebie one and also the genre like a Venn diagram giving me the ones on both shelves. I pick the genre /subgenre based on mood or other factors like seasons or RAT for COYER or whatever. I also have my Sunday series now which has series I want to read. Some I own, some are at the library. Sadly so many of them are LONG series with more than 20 books so for the past year or so the only one I finished was Joe Pickett (from the library). The COYER RATs (readathons) help me read other books I own or have free.

  6. Sounds like a lot of fun and I hope it works out for you. I am a bit of a mood reader so don't think it would work for me. But if were doing a reread of my shelves it would work as I like all the ones I have kept.

  8. I love the idea of TBR jars, but I just don't think I could read that way. I'm glad they work so well for you, though!
