A Troubling Tail - Cozy Mystery Review

Goodreads: A Troubling Tail (A Bookmobile Cat Mystery)

Rating: Liked It! (3.5 Stars)
Source:   Publisher

Description:  The charming town of Chilson, Michigan, is beautiful in the spring, and the bookmobile is delivering great reads far and wide on one of the first warm days of the year. But a chill sweeps through when they discover that one of their favorite patrons, the owner of Henika’s Candy Emporium, has been found murdered. Although Minnie can’t understand who could have had a motive to murder such a kind man, she decides that the sticky problem isn’t hers to solve.

However, when rumors start flying around town and the police have no leads, Minnie decides to throw her investigative hat into the ring. The more Minnie investigates, the less certain she is that the victim’s past is as wholesome as his reputation. But Minnie has plenty of experience unearthing inconvenient truths, and she and Eddie won’t rest until they determine how the victim met his bitter end.

Genre:  Mystery - Cozy

Why I Picked This Book:  I've been wanting to read this series for ages and while I prefer to read series in order I decided to give this one a try to see if this is a series I want to invest more time in.

My Impression:  I decided to jump in at book 11 to see if I enjoyed the characters and the story enough to go back and read the previous 10 books.  This story had a strong community feel with lots of side characters both in Minnie's personal and professional life.  There's a very opinionated cat sidekick which I always enjoy as well as lots of time in library related tasks.  I thought it was interesting that Minnie's focus is more on outreach than internal library operations.  I have read a number of library themed cozies and that made this one a bit unique.

The mystery is interesting and completely stand alone.  Who would want to kill a nice man who runs a candy shop?  Minnie digs into his secrets and his past to help a friend and also gets to do a bit of community gossip.  I really wasn't quite sure what was going on until close to the end and I thoroughly enjoyed getting there.

Because of the community feel for this book I think this is a series that really improves as you get to know all of the characters.  In answer to the question that I had when I started the book - Did I enjoy this book enough to go back and read the previous 10 - hands down yes.  This was a fun read and I'm looking forward to getting to know the characters that I met here better.

Would I Read More of this Series/Author?  Absolutely!  I enjoyed this bookish cozy with a fun cat sidekick and a good community feel.

Would I Recommend this Book?  If you like bookish cozies with a bit of humor and a great sidekick I think this series would be a winner!

* I received this book in exchange for an honest review.  As always my opinions and impressions are completely my own. *

  2. I can't do that - jumping in late in a series. I think you lose a lot of character and world development so you don't know the inside jokes etc that make the series more fun.
