This Week in Reading - April 21

It's Sunday Post time!  This is hosted by the awesome Caffeinated Book Reviewer and gives us all a chance to recap our week.

What I Got:

Forgotten Bones by Vivian Barz - This one reminds me a little bit of a show on TNT called Perception.  There's a cop and a professor who not only has been diagnosed with schizophrenia who sees crime related visions.  I'm really curious about this one! (Publisher)

Jackson by Emily March - I almost passed on this one because I don't like name titles but this one has a bookstore owner which I can never resist.  Plus, I've loved the last few books by March so I decided to get past that particular bias. (Publisher)

A Legacy of Murder by Connie Berry - There's an antique store in England.  And that was pretty much all I needed to know.  (NetGalley)

Dying for Devil's Food  by Jenn McKinlay - This is a fun cozy series though it does make me want to binge eat cupcakes! (Publisher)

Currently:

Reading:  The View from Alameda Island by Robyn Carr and still reading The Last Camellia by Sarah Jio

Listening:  I'm almost done with Shadow Spell by Nora Roberts and I'm going to start Sense and Sensibility by Jane Austen

Watching:  We've been heavy on the movies lately and I've watched a few episodes of MacGyver.  It's not the best show but it is entertaining.

Off the Blog:

This weekend was a three day weekend.  The Tornado had Friday off for a weather day (we lose them if we have a number of school days cancelled for weather concerns but it's been a mild year).  We had talked about going on a day trip but the next two weekends are going to be kind of nuts so we decided to stay home.  Luckily we did because the Tornado's teacher called me Thursday afternoon to tell me he was sick!  So we had more of a low key weekend than expected.  He's feeling much better though a bit puny and sorry for himself.

I'm sticking with the running and it's getting equally easier and harder.  I'm not as tired and it doesn't hurt as much but I'm seriously sore!  I'm also trying to up my strength workouts as that's supposed to help with the soreness but we'll see.

We've discovered our cat is scared of thunderstorms.  He's not quite two yet and apparently in most of those two years we haven't had many storms.  However, the last month or so we've had several drawn out storms and it is past pathetic.  He's literally paralyzed by fear.  I've had dogs who were afraid of storms and it was always sad but I could help them a little.  With him I have no clue.  I got some treats that are supposed to relax him but it's near impossible to get him to take them and when I do I haven't noticed any help.  Any advice?

  1. Aww poor kitty! I don't have any really good advice unfortunately, but one of our cats isn't super crazy about storms either, and if they get too rough she tends to hide a bit. But then she's not fond of the vacuum sweeper either and disappears whenever it comes out. :)

  2. I like the look of The Missing Years...and Dying for Devil's Food does make me hungry, but it also sounds good.

I'm like your cat...I hate thunder storms.

Enjoy your books and your week.

  3. I certainly went for Jackson as I have loved the whole series by E March so it was on my list and was happy to review it. Here in NZ Good Friday is always a holiday, absolutely everything closes - all shops etc. I find listening to classics on audio really helps in getting my interest whetted.

  6. Not having pets I can't really offer anything other that sedatives from the vet, sorry! I'm not a great fan of storms myself-they make me really nervous-but luckily my part of Scotland rarely gets them.

  7. I'm scared of thunderstorms, too, even though I think they are beautiful when they are over!

I hope your Tornado is feeling better soon. It's awful when they get sick.

I'd like to invite you to join in at Sunday Salon on my blog each weekend, too. Sunday Salon has been around for about twelve years, but I've just taken over the meme, and I hope to build it up again to becoming a great place to share links and visit other blogs and talk books.

  8. I hope Tornado is feeling better, and glad you have some free time to relax a little. So sorry about your baby and the fear. Wish there were headphones with soothing music for our pets during times like these. Kudos on keeping up with your running! Hugs and Happy Easter! RO

  9. Glad the Tornado is feeling better. Poor kitty, not sure what to do about that. I really don't think those relaxing pills or treats help as they don't do anything for my dogs.

I really need Forgotten Bones!!!!! Must stalk the publisher...lol.

Have a great week and happy reading!

  10. FORGOTTEN BONES sounds really good! I also need to give Emily March a try. I've heard good things about her books, just haven't gotten to them yet.

  12. I haven't got a cat so I'm unable to give any advice. I watched the first season of MacGyver last year but I haven't seen any of this new season; you're right, it's light, easy watching entertainment. I used to put it on when I did the ironing to help pass the time (I HATE ironing! Lol!) x

  13. Good luck with running! I need to get back to that. I’ve been so busy that it’s been a week since I last ran. Poor cat. My dog is scared of storms. She just hides under the desk and farts a lot until it’s over. She’s almost 11 years old, so you’d think she’d be used to storms by now, but nope.

  14. Well with busy weekends next, it is great you were able to rest and relax at home. It's sad Tornado was not feeling great. I hope he's better. Have a great week!

  17. I'm glad your son is feeling better. Also, good for you sticking with the running. Such good exercise and a chance to get away from everything for a bit.

Don't know what to suggest about your cat but for dogs we used a Thundershirt. Kobe was terrified of thunder, fireworks and gun shots but the thundershirt helped him immensely. I looked them up and they do make a thundershirt for cats. Its a snug shirt that you strap on and gives them a feeling of comfort. Like a hug. We'd put Kobe's on early if we knew a bad storm was coming. Here's the link:

  18. Hey, I found an old post from the thundershirt we bought Kobe. Check it out so you can see how he looked before and after.

  19. I loved Perception. I had this one marked as a possible audio review :)

  20. I really want to read the Jenn McKinlay series. It looks so good. I hope you have a great week!

  21. I can't help with the cat, but our new dog is terrified of thunder and will circle the house to make sure everyone is awake and panicked with him.

  22. Oh poor kitty. I think all you can do is give them a dark, cozy, sound insulated hiding place, like in the back of a closet. You are right, you can't help calm them like dogs. They seem to want to be left alone. 🐈

I hope you had an excellent Easter and are having a wonderful week. 🌞

  23. Good luck with running! Poor kitty, I've never had a kitten so I have no useful advice but I do hope you are able to find something that can help.

  24. You go on the running!!! I run with the help of our treadmill but it's still running right? And blasting Linkin Park + a few of their complilation with Jay-Z helps me keep going.
