This Week in Reading - February 9th

It's Sunday Post time!  This is hosted by the awesome Caffeinated Book Reviewer and gives us all a chance to recap our week.

What I Got:

I didn't get anything!  I'm trying to cut down on my review books so I can focus on some of my TBR books and I managed to avoid review books or really any new books!  For this week at least!

Currently:

Reading:  Edge of Evil by Heather Graham and Governess Gone Rogue by Laura Lee Gurhke

Listening:  I finished The Widow by Fiona Barton and then started listening to The Death of Mrs. Westaway by Ruth Ware.  However, since I just finished a darker psychological thriller and was also reading a darker psychological thriller I just wasn't in the mood for another one.  So I stopped that and switched over to Simply Irresistible by Jill Shalvis which is about as far away from a darker psychological thriller as possible.

Off the Blog:

It seems (though I'm still spraying everything down with Lysol) that we may have missed the flu and strep that was hitting the Tornado's school hard.  On Monday almost half the third grade was absent and the rumors said we were only a handful of confirmed cases away from shutting the school down for a few days.  So far we are all still healthy.  The Tornado was really congested and run down earlier in the week (I even let him stay home Monday because I wanted him to get as much rest as possible) but it looks like it was just allergies.  Then my husband looked like he might have a stomach bug but given how he recovered and the fact that he ate a chili dog about 10 hours before he started feeling bad we're leaning towards food poisoning.  I've been really tired but nothing worse so I think we're all a bit run down but otherwise healthy which is a huge relief.  I've only had the flu one time and no part of me wants to revisit it or to let it into the house at all.

We had one gorgeous spring like day with temps in the 70s towards the end of the week.  I took the Tornado to a big playground with some friends and all the kids ran around like crazy and the moms all relaxed in the sun.  Now it's back to cold (well for us - temps in the 40s) and I'm not real thrilled.  Since so many people seem to have drifts of snow and crazy cold weather I'm trying to keep some perspective!

  1. A chili dog- oy. Glad you guys seemed to have avoided the worst though. I'm ready for spring!

I've seen The widow around a bit and it looks pretty good.

  2. High five for eyes off review books with the aim of hitting your own TBR shelf. I hope to get on to that about April as I am trying very hard to keep my own eyes away from thos darn review books.

  3. I'm glad you've avoided the flu so far; may you continue to do so! I know what you mean about wanting to read your TBR pile and cut back on review books. I'm feeling the same, but I did download two review books this week that I probably would have bought or borrowed if I hadn't been approved. (On the other hand, I turned down three review requests by publicists or publishers this week.) Have a great week, Katherine!

  4. I'm glad you've avoided the flu so far - and here's to avoiding it all winter!
Congrats on not getting any new books this week - I am incapable of doing that. I don't think it's ever happened since I started blogging at least.
Have a wonderful week ahead and happy reading.

  5. I was really sick this week, but I don't think I had the flu either, cause I had no fever. Despite that, I couldn't do anything for like three days. Glad I'm finally better!
Oh, and congrats on not hauling any extra books :) have a nice week!

  6. I had a horrible dose of Aussie flu last year and I don't want anything like that this year!

  7. Glad you so far you have dodged the flu - yes... having had it once, I certainly don't want to feel that ill again! Sorry that your husband was poorly - that's NEVER fun. As for the weather - let's hope you get a few more Spring days soon, so long as it doesn't mess up the flora and fauna:)). Have a good week, Katherine.

  8. Hope your family is feeling fine right now-- what a week! Yes, I'd take 40s temps gladly; we are in a deep freeze, well off and on, and more snow expected Tuesday.

I'm with you about switching up genres after an intense book. I like to rotate memoirs, cozies, small town romances, in between the psychological thrillers.

  9. I loved The Widow, The Child, and The Suspect from Fiona Barton.

This past week, though, I read one thriller and one lighter read from Robyn Carr. Enjoy your new week, and here are MY WEEKLY UPDATES

  10. We had THREE days with temps in the 50s and I was smiling big. We are back in the teens again, and although I thought I could keep some of that good feeling for a couple of days the cold sucked it right back out of me. Ha ha. I am thankful we haven't gotten the amount of snow we usually get this year, though. ⛄

Yay for dodging the flu! I have also managed to stay sickness free this winter. Fingers crossed for everyone until spring. 🌷

    Have a wonderful week. 🌞

  11. Good for you for switching it up and I laughed at your 'about as far away from...' comment. Glad you guys have managed to stay mostly well. I've had a couple of days of really bad allergy/sore throat, but I think that spring will be coming soon and then all will be well. Hot herbal tea and I are on very good terms. Have a good week!

  12. I love a good psychological thriller, but I do need to break them up with lighter reads just like you. I hope you are enjoying your reading! I am so glad you and your family are healthy so far, minus minor ailments here and there. We weren't able to dodge that bullet, but I'm hoping we can stay healthy from here on out. Fingers crossed! I hope you have a great week, Katherine!

  13. I hope you're all well this upcoming week! I'm personally getting sick of the cold as well. Where I work, the cold air blows in from the outside and on Friday I was wearing a hat and scarf... indoors! After Christmas I'm happy for summer to come.

  14. Good to hear you've avoided the illness and sickness from school - it so easily spreads around! Wishing you all well health for this week.

It is great that you're working towards your goal of less review books and more TBR reads - success for this week! Your spring like day sounds lovely - when those days arrive it is easy to be lulled into a false sense security, but winter is still here for the meanwhile. Good enjoy the temp rises when possible though.

A lovely week to you & happy reading!

  15. Hurray to your decision on focusing on your TBR. I made that conscious choice last year and that is the best thing I have done for me. I hope the illness stays away from you and your family.

  18. So glad it seems to have missed you guys! We are still lysoling like mad over here too, to keep things at bay. Lol. A day in the 70s sounds magical! Glad you guys got outside to run around and soak up the sun a bit. :)

  19. Glad you didn't get sick!! I feel like all the schools are dealing with all sorts of sickness. And good job for not getting any new books. I also want to focus on my TBR. Hope you have a great week!

  20. Yay! We have no interest in the flu either. However, we seem to be on parallel book paths. I am almost finishing listening to The Widow. And I just finally got The Evil Inside by Heather Graham as I am working my way through that series.

That day of 70s last week was like magic! I hope you all stay well and have a great reading week!

  23. Lucky you! All of us in my house have been sick in some way over the last two weeks. One had strep, I had vomiting, my husband has pink eye, and the others have cold/coughs. Ick.
