Halloween has officially passed but it's still a little too early to start decorating the Christmas tree which means it's food season! Otherwise known as Thanksgiving here in the US. This is time for turkey, apples, pumpkin, butternut squash, lots and lots of pie and all kinds of other delicious stick to your ribs kind of food. So in honor of all that foodie-goodness I've searched my TBR to find books full of food to help celebrate the season.
1. Four Kitchens: My Life Behind the Burner in New York, Hanoi, Tel Aviv, and Paris by Lauren Shockey - I love memoirs by professions chefs and this sounds like such a varied experience.
2. What She Ate: Six Remarkable Women and the Food that Tells Their Stories by Laura Shapiro - I love seeing what people ate over time. It tells so much of regular people history as well as showing insight into the person.
3. Eating for Beginners: An Education in the Pleasures of Food from Chefs, Farmers, and One Picky Kid by Melanie Rehak - This one intrigues me for two reasons. I love foodie books from all angles and I have a seriously picky kid.
4. Love, Loss, and What We Ate: A Memoir by Padma Lakshmi - I really enjoyed getting to know Padma on Top Chef and I've really enjoyed her cookbook. I'm looking forward to hearing more of her story through this book.
5. Two for the Road: Our Love Affair with American Food by Jane and Michael Stern - This book combines two of my very favorite things - road trips and food!
6. McCarthy's Bar: A Journey of Discovery in Ireland by Pete McCarthy - Okay THIS book combines two of my very favorite things - Ireland and food!
7. Fried Eggs with Chopsticks: One Woman's Hilarious Adventure into a Country and a Culture Not Her Own by Polly Evans - It's always fun to read about people a bit outside their comfort zone and this one has definitely caught my eye.
8. 97 Orchard: An Edible History of Five Immigrant Families in One New York Tenement by Jane Ziegelman - This one really intrigues me and is very much a regular people history through food. I'm really looking forward to this one.
9. Eating for England: The Delights and Eccentricities of the British at the Table by Nigel Slater - British cuisine doesn't really have the best reputation but I read a lot of books set in the UK and the food always sounds amazing.
10. 52 Loaves: One Man's Relentless Pursuit of Truth, Meaning and a Perfect Crust by William Alexander - I love a project book and this is a project book about bread! This is a must read for me!
What foodie books do you have on your TBR?
I think it's great that you enjoy reading all these cookbooks and food memoirs and histories. Mostly, I just enjoy eating food, and cooking sometimes. I did the index for a very interesting history of milk, though -- that was fascinating.
ReplyDeleteAbout the only food-related book currently on my wish-list to read is The Unofficial Harry Potter Cookbook by Dinah Bucholz. Oh, and there's a scone recipe book I'm trying to get my hands on, too. It's called The Best 50 Scone Recipes, and it's out of print. The cheapest used one on Amazon is $765. Yes, really: seven hundred and sixty-five dollars. For a little tiny paperback. It's absurd. Two copies are selling for over $1000. Unbelievable. My only hope is to stumble across a copy in a yard sale or something.
Eating for Beginners and Two for the Road both sound great to me. McCarthy's Bar looks fun too. And yeah... Ireland. :)
ReplyDeleteHaha. I was watching a Youtube video the other day, and this woman was saying she plans on putting her Christmas tree up this weekend. I love Christmas too, but whoa! I don't read much about food, but I sure do love food. I have some foodie friends that would love a lot of these.
ReplyDeleteSome of these certainly sound interesting.
ReplyDeleteThis post made me hungry! Great list.
ReplyDeleteOh, food. Sweet, delicious, food! I'm not very good with physical cookbooks. I always seem to look up a recipe online and try it out.
ReplyDeleteI have seen 52 loaves before and it looks super interesting. My college housemate was a bread baking genius, but I was dreadful. I have never tried a bread machine, have you? I am putting 97 Orchard on my Goodreads foodie tbr. Thanks for the list. 🍴
ReplyDeleteYou always have the best list of cooking or food books!!
ReplyDeleteI just picked up a ton of cookbooks from the library, and have you to thank for going back for more. (lol) The other thing I've been doing is checking out food documentaries on Netflix. Some of the stories are fantastic and fun. Hugs...RO
ReplyDeleteMcCarthy's Bar is one of my favorites. I read it on the plane home from Ireland and drew lots of curious looks from all of my laughing.
ReplyDeleteGosh you are making me hungry. I really should look at cookbooks more. I get stuck in a rut with cooking.
ReplyDeleteInteresting..it definitely is food season :) I haven't heard of most of these books.
ReplyDeleteI feel like I need a big snack right now. Even though it's 12am. lol
ReplyDeleteI've only read the first one (which I really enjoyed) but will definitely be adding some of the others!
