This Week in Reading - October 22

It's Sunday Post time!  This is hosted by the awesome Caffeinated Book Reviewer and gives us all a chance to recap our week.

What I Got:

In the Shadow of Agatha Christie by Leslie S. Klinger (editor) - With Agatha Christie in the title you know there was no way I could resist this one.  This book really isn't about her but about the women mystery writers who came before her that have largely been forgotten. I'm looking forward to reading it!  (NetGalley)

The Pines of Winder Ranch by RaeAnne Thayne - I love RaeAnne Thayne's books and this is from a series I haven't read much from.  I'm looking forward to it.  (NetGalley)

Assault and Buttery by Kristi Abbott - This is a series I've been wanting to read for awhile and this one features the discovery of an old diary in the walls of a popcorn store.  I can't wait! (Publisher)

Better Late Than Never by Jenn McKinlay - I love Jenn McKinlay and her library series is one of my favorites so I couldn't pass this one up.  (Publisher)

A Late Frost by Sheila Connolly - I love this cozy mystery series set in an apple orchard and this was another series I couldn't pass up. (Publisher)

City of Lies by Victoria Thompson - I've been wanting to read Victoria Thompson for ages and this first book in a new historical mystery series was another I couldn't resit.  (Publisher)

Currently:

Reading:  Treasure on Lilac Lane by Donna Alward and Stalking Jack the Ripper by Kerri Maniscalo

Listening:  I finished How to Train Your Dragon which was really fun (and narrated by David Tennant) and am now listening to The Lying Game by Ruth Ware which I've really been looking forward to getting.

Watching:  Mostly movies.  Over the weekend I watched Mrs. Miniver (if you enjoyed The Chillbury Ladies Choir you need to watch this movie.  The plot is very different but there's a similar feel), To Have and Have Not, and From Here to Eternity.  All were amazing.  J and I watched Saving Mr. Banks which I loved and then all of us watched The Nightmare Before Christmas which somehow neither J or I had watched.  The Tornado gets a pass on that as he's only 7.

Off the Blog:

This is the first weekend in a month that I've been home and I'm really enjoying it!  I even slept late (a whole 9AM) which was a super heavenly.  Most of this weekend was spent at home though we did go see The Lego Ninjago movie this weekend AND got a Halloween costume for the Tornado.

I actually ordered actual hold in your hand photos!  It's been on my to do list for ages as I really miss having photo albums.  My first thought was to do the whole digital scrapbook thing but I finally had to admit to myself that that wasn't going to happen.  So now my goal is to order photos and put them in an album and call it done!  I figure if I make it too complicated it won't get done.  That being said most of the photos I ordered are the Tornado with characters at Disney.  I want to do an album that has the photo and the autograph all together so I'm still staying a little complicated!  What do you do with photos?

I also somehow missed that this weekend was the Readathon.  Needless to say I'm not participating though I really want to.  I need to get better about just deciding I'm going to do with it and work around any conflicts that arise (because they always arise).  I do love seeing what everyone is reading and their results so I'm enjoying those posts!

  1. I've enjoyed some of Thayne's books and always plan to read more. I have read a couple of Connolly's County Cork series...so the apple orchard ones sound very tempting.

I love photo albums, and have them dating back to the 1960s...but in 2010, I stopped ordering prints, so that's where my albums ended. But I love looking at them.

Some of the older photos are pretty faded and discolored (before they had acid-free pages in albums).

Enjoy your week, and here are MY WEEKLY UPDATES

  2. Enjoy your new reads! I like the sound of A Late Frost in particular :)

Photos! I love photos, and still occasionally get them printed. We have a few photo albums around the place, but I must admit we don't look at them very often. I sometimes wonder what the future will look like, will everything just be online? I had a photobook made up of my old cat after he passed, I love seeing it on my shelf.

I hope you have a wonderful week ahead :)

  6. I also keep saying we should make actual print photos, like in my childhood :) there's something totally different about them. But then I keep forgetting!
That's too bad you didn't take part in Dewey's. I did and it was my first one. I really enjoyed it :) I got lucky because everyone was busy that day, Bf had just returned from a party and slept like the entire day :D so.. good timing!

  7. You got some great sounding books! So glad you picked up City of Lies!

I always pick out pictures that I want to show off or keep in a photo album and the rest just stay on a SD card in case I want them at some point. I tried scrapbooking at one time but it's so expensive and digital scrapbooking just wasn't the same. :)

Have a great week and happy reading!

  8. It's been years since I had real photos! I admit to having some printed to mail o elderly family as they aren't in the digital loop. They love getting photos.
I knew you couldn't resist a book with Agatha in it!
No readathon for me either. We are currently on the bay side at St George island for a few days. I've spent the time staring at pelicans, the gulf water lapping at the dock and a wine glass in hand!

  9. I love RaeAnne Thayne's books, but haven't read any in awhile. So many of the series you are reading are on my "to be read series" lists.

I'm not participating in the readathon either. I always want to, but for one reason or another, I never get around to it.

Hope you have a great week!

    My Sunday post is here.

  12. We went to Disney, and I ordered photos. I want to put a photo with each autograph in the kids' autograph books. It's been a year . . . someday I'll get it done.

    Have a great week!

  13. In the Shadow of Agatha Christie sounds intriguing and I'm looking forward to your thoughts on it. Maybe you'll find more authors worth reading from it.

  14. I should track down Mrs. Miniver. I think I saw it a long time ago and probably didn't appreciate it as much as I might now.
    Sleeping until 9 sounds heavenly!

  16. I must look up Mrs Miniver too after enjoying the Chilbury book. I have enjoyed the two books I have read of RaeAnne Thayne's Haven Point series but want to try a few books in the one you have the books from.

  17. I grabbed City of Lies for the same reason. It was good Katherine...enjoy!

  18. Now I have to listen to How to Train Your Dragon! I am glad you enjoyed it. :-) I got a copy of The Pines of Winder Ranch and am looking forward to it. I'm surprised my daughter hasn't been begging to watch The Nightmare Before Christmas. It's one of her favorites. I am hoping I can talk her into Hocus Pocus this year, but we'll see. She's still rather fickle about the movies she'll watch.

I love your idea for photo albums! I'm still stuck on the idea of doing digital albums. I did one for her first year, but now I'm five years behind . . .

I hope you have a great week!

  19. I'm excited for Thayne's books, too! Hope we love them! I need t print out so many pictures and put them in an album, but time is so restrictive!

Enjoy your week and happy reading! :)

  20. I missed that RaeAnne Thayne -- thank you for pointing me to it! I've just requested it. I'm also going to try to find the How to Train Your Dragon audio.

I like your plan for getting back to doing photo albums. I've got all these digital photos and they just sit there on my computer, doing nothing. I need to get some printed out and do something with them -- put them on the walls, put them in an album, send them to my parents... probably a little of all of those things.

    Have a wonderful week!

  21. Dewey's was this last weekend!? Must be no one I knew was doing it because I saw zero posts. I intended to do it, but it slipped my mind again as usual. What a wonderful idea that Christie book author had. I would love similar books about popular authors that I love.

I never got around to doing albums of Sebastian's photos, but his father and I had a photography business so they are all in nice archival storage boxes, although not labeled and dated, ha ha. I have started sorting through them to weed out the extras and duds to scan them into the computer, but I am going to set aside the really good ones and the special ones for physical albums. I think he will appreciate that in the future. There is something wonderful about sitting down with someone and looking through a physical photo album. <3

I hope you had great start to the week. :)

  22. Yes... each year, I order the best of my digital photos in print form, put them in my albums for the year and then store them and replace them with the following year's pics. It works well. The photos you have of the Tornado at Disney sounds great. Glad you had a great week-end and hope the coming week is a good one:)

  23. I am so bad with photos anymore. I did better with regular film cameras. Now I just download them and forget about them. At least I learned to store them in dropbox so I don't lose anymore when a computer dies. Enjoy your new books!

  24. Wow - you've been busy! I'm glad you got a weekend at home though! That's always a necessary chill, right?

I do love photos - especially hold in your hand ones! I'm about to do a big canvas printing project for our house though - candids and family pics that I just love to look at all the time.

I didn't do the readathon either but so many people did and it sounded amazing although I'm not sure if I could have devoted that much time to reading. I'm super tempted to try it next year though! I hope you're having a great week and that you are enjoying your reads.

Thanks for stopping by my blog!

  25. That's rough! I feel like a crazy person when my (to other people) weird house and road relationship are out of whack. Like, don't you live in two houses and travel back and forth on the road every weekend? No? Oh, you're missing out. (Yes, this is a sore point with me when people are rude about it.) I hope you had time to relax! I never participate in the readathons because something does always come up and conflict, so I just don't make the commitment. I do nothing with the photos I take except uploading them to a folder on my computer and to Facebook. I would love to get myself together and print things out...but time.

  26. We don't usually print out photos. They're just files on the laptop.
Thank you for the card love. Yes, even my smallest alphabet set was too big once Thanks was put together. I'm glad I thought of the printer which made my life easier. And yes, I hope that sewing cozy series just gets better and better. I really like the sewing circle of ladies and the little girl in the story was adorbs.
