Friday Linkups - The Luster of Lost Things

It's Friday linkup time!  I'm linking up with the Book Blogger Hop hosted by Coffee Addicted Writer, Book Beginnings of Fridays hosted by Rose City Reader, and the Friday 56 hosted by Freda's Voice

This Week's Book Blogger Hop Question:
When you enter an unfamiliar house or apartment for the first time, do you feel disappointed if you don't see any bookshelves or books on the coffee table?

My Answer:
I'm not sure I'd be disappointed though what do you look at when your host steps out of the room for a minute if you don't have a bookcase or stack of books to scan?    I'm always mystified by people who don't read.  I mean I love TV and watch a decent amount (okay more than decent) but sometimes only a book will do!

This week's book is a review book that I'm really excited about!  The Luster of Lost Things by Sophie Chen Keller is about a little boy who is unable to speak, a bakery full of magic and a journey complete with an overweight golden retriever.  So far it's just a gorgeous read.

The Beginning:
Somewhere in the Fourteenth Street subway station there is a statue of a little bronze man who waits for a train that never comes.

My Thoughts:
I just love that image of the little man waiting for the train that never comes.  It's poignant and patient.

The 56:
They head away from the front window and I let out a trapped breath.  The big man does not have a crowbar tucked into his belt ad there is no sledgehammer crew waiting to barge inside; he did not come here to seive the shop after all, but to consider it, and I think we passed his test because he is at ease, making small talk with Lucy with his elbow propped on the Book's display case.

My Thoughts:
This sounds like the thought process of a twelve year old but not in a bad way.  There's a little bit of ramble and some nervousness but I do feel like I'm getting the boy's inner thoughts.

So what do you think?  Keep reading?

  1. I am bad and offered at most things. One of those including watching TV and movies. The only way that I'm able to connect with people is books and video games.

Okay, that's not at all true. But that's exactly how I feel when I go into somebody's place and they don't have a computer with a decent set up or bookshelves full of books.

  2. I'd need to know more before I read this one. I hope you enjoy it. I'm reading White Hot by Ilona Andrews this week. Happy reading!

  3. This book sounds fascinating...and I love the title and cover.

I am always amazed at homes with no books...

I certainly make up for it, having more books than one person should have. Enjoy your weekend, and thanks for visiting my blog.

  4. This cover is very intriguing. I love the question this week - I don't think I am very disappointed but a non-book household is very strange to me.

  5. I love the sound of The Luster of Lost Things! I would keep reading knowing more about the book, for sure. Especially after the excerpts. It can be iffy reading a book narrated by a child, but this one does sound good. Thank you for sharing, Katherine!

I don't think I'd be disappointed about not seeing books when in a stranger's home. I don't think my mind would take me there--unless I saw them--because that would certainly bring my attention to them.

I hope you and your family have a great weekend.

  8. The Luster of Lost Things sounds good....LOVE the title.

Nice answer to the Blog Hop...I am not disappointed just curious why there are no books or why some folks don't read. I guess we all are different and need to remember that.

Have a great weekend, and Happy Hopping!!

  10. Is there really such a statue? How sad. Waiting for something that never comes. My Friday Quotes

  11. I've never felt disappointed about it as it's not something I look for specifically in a person's home. I do however quite often ask people I'm getting to know if they like to read, and I've definitely felt disappointment when they've said no.

  12. I feel the same way too! I like TV too, but I'm most happier with just a book in hand!

  13. I'm not disappointed per se if someone doesn't have books or a bookcase, but if they DO then I always like to see what they have. :) So if they leave the room I might saunter over and check out the books ha ha. My cousin who got recently married had Christmas last year for the first time, and I was delighted to see he had some of the same books in their bookcase which is right by the front door. Talk about a good first impression of their new house. :)

  14. I like that image in the beginning too. The book is off to a good start.

  15. This book sounds like it is a really sweet middle grade that I would really enjoy. I think that any books that involve animals tend to have the best storylines. Enjoy! :)

  16. Great point. Bookcases provided a good focal point, and they can help spark conversation.

  17. I LOVE THIS BOOK! I don't know that you can tell that much from no books/bookshelves because some people read exclusively from the library, or have spreaders. My sister reads about 40 books a year and she has zero books in her living room. The few she does have (20 or so) are in her bedroom. She has tons on her ereader though, and gets audio books from the library. :)

  18. Nice BBH answer, Katherine! That's EXACTLY what I think when the person excuses themselves and steps away for a few minutes. If there are no books in sight, what do I do, just twiddle my thumbs? Lol. Of course, I could watch TV, if they have it on, but I would MUCH prefer to check out one of the books on their shelves! So I guess this would be the source of my disappointment. Like you, I'm totally mystified by people who don't seem to read. Of course, it's entirely possible that they prefer ebooks and/or library books. Or they might prefer to keep their books in a more private room. You never know! But I think it's such a NICE feeling to walk into someone's living room, and be surrounded by books!! Lol.

BTW, your book selection for the other Friday memes looks VERY interesting! I've seen this book on a couple of other blogs. Gotta check it out further!!

Thanks for sharing your thoughts! Also, thanks for dropping by and commenting on my own BBH post!! ENJOY your weekend!! <3 <3 <3 :) :) :)

  19. Interesting answer to an equally interesting question....

I wouldn't be disappointed if there were no books about when in a new to me, but I do like to have nosy. Personally though I actually keep my books in my bedroom, so wouldn't be surprised if there were none in a more communal area.

Love the cover of this title!

  20. I totally agree that sometimes only a book will do. Even though we don't watch very much television in our house, sometimes I want to engage with my text rather than passively watch it. Happy reading!

  21. I scrutinize everything, so the lack of a bookcase doesn't matter much to me. I have noticed a lot lately through Instagram that a lot of women have bookcases in their bedroom or a spare room, not the living room/family room or den.

  22. I watch a lot of TV too but when nothing's on and I wanna read, I read lol. Wonder what other non-readers do when there's no TV.
