This Week in Reading - June 11

It's Sunday Post time!  This is hosted by the awesome Caffeinated Book Reviewer and gives us all a chance to recap our week.

What I Got:

The Summer that Made Us by Robyn Carr - I love any book about family relationships and making peace with the past.  Throw in that this one is by Robyn Carr and how could I pass it up??  (Little Bird Publicity)

Sugar Pine Trail by RaeAnne Thayne - How can it be time for holiday books to start landing on the schedule (I mean it's for September/October but still!)?  Luckily, Thayne writes some of my favorite Christmas books and this one features a librarian which I'm all kinds of on board with! (Little Bird Publicity)

A Fatal Collection by Mary Ellen Hughes - I have several books in previous series by Hughes already on my shelf but this is the first book in a new series around a music box shop so I just had to give it a try!  (NetGalley)

I have a few books arriving in the next few weeks but no pending requests so I'm calling it a win!

Currently:

Reading: Bad Housekeeping by Maia Chance and The Beach at Painter's Cove by Shelley Noble

Listening:  Still listening to podcasts and trying to get caught up.  I'm almost to February!  I'm really enjoying The Vanished which is a true crime about missing persons cases and Again With This where they recap Beverly Hills 90201 episodes.  I only watched the first few seasons so they're talking about ones I haven't really seen (until I go back and listen to the early ones but that will be awhile) but they're hilarious.

Watching:  This hasn't been a big TV week.  I was hoping to get caught up with Doctor Who because I'm loving the new season and finally watch the related Class but didn't get around to it this week.

Off the Blog:

This was a long week.  I had a procedure called Rush Immunotherapy on Thursday which sounds more intense than it actually is.  Basically you sit in a room by yourself and get allergy shots every 30 minutes.  I found out last year that I'm allergic to cats which explained why my eyes were a constantly swollen mess.  Right before that our elderly cat had passed away and for the first time in years we were cat free.  And all of a sudden I could wear eye makeup again without risking looking like an extra from The Walking Dead.  But the Tornado really wants a cat and I don't want to disappoint him so I talked to my allergist and we figured out away that we can get a cat and I won't want to scratch my face off.  One of the big things was the allergy shots and apparently doing the rush thing makes the treatment start taking effect earlier.  There was tons of medicine before hand which made me feel groggy and took a chunk out of my reading time.  The procedure wasn't too bad though a little boring.  I did have a reaction to one of the last ones which meant I had to use an epi-pen and be observed for awhile but it wasn't a big deal. Now I just have to have 1 shot a week for awhile and all should be good.

My reward for all that was we are camping this weekend!  Back in March we got an RV and this will be our first time using it.  I'm super excited and hoping everything goes well!  I won't be around this weekend but I'll let you know how everything goes next week.

  1. Have fun camping! Hope you guys have a great time. And that rush immunotherapy doesn't sound too fun, but I've heard of something like that and they say it helps. Hopefully this week will be a little more relaxing!

The Summer That Made Us has a neat cover, makes you want to hang out by the water! And I've heard good things about the new Dr. Who!

  2. Oh yes to the Robyn Carr book and I said yes to Sugar Pine Trail too! I am reading Shelley Noble's book next, noticed you were reading it when I was adding it to Goodreads. Hope its good. You sure deserve a medal for being willing to take all those shots.

  3. Oh no! I'm sorry about the cat allergy and that treatment! Wow. The things we do for kids?

    Hope you have fun camping!

  4. I have so many questions that I ought to just email you. I'm so sorry about the allergy shots you need, that sounds like a drag. I hope you are feeling better. Maybe you could compromise and get a pet that isn't such an allergy producer? But I know if you love cats, it will be worth it. Ours used to get my eyes watery too but he is long passed now.

What kind of RV did you get? I'm excited for you. What camp are you going to? We loved our only Sunnybrook but sold it years back when motorcycle trips took priority. Looking forward to hearing about your trip.

  7. Your allergy RUSH session sounds really interesting--intense, but interesting. I hope it works well for you and that the Tornado is able to get a cat, Katherine. I was tested for allergies when I was a child, but my allergies are much worse now. I keep wondering if I'm allergic to cats now though I've had cats all my life.....

It does seem early to read Christmas books. I haven't read any books by Thayne, but am always looking for more Christmas books to read in November and December.

I hope you're having a wonderful time on your camping trip. I've been trying to convince my husband to rent an RV and drive to national parks in the Southwest. I haven't convinced him yet...lol. Have a great week.

  8. Hopefully you can get that pesky allergy taken care of! And have a great time camping! I'm more of a tent camper but however you get outdoors, enjoy it! :) Have a great week!

  9. I need to catch up on Dr Who as well! I'm loving the new companion-- she reminds me a lot of Donna, who was perhaps my favorite companion. I also really want to get around to watching Class-- I'm a little worried it'll be a adults-pretending-to-be-high-schoolers-type show but to be fair I've only seen like two commercials so really I shouldn't judge it yet ;)

  10. Enjoy the RV! Years ago we were thisclose to getting one, and attended an RV show-- what fun! Except we were going to live it in for a couple of years and my kids vetoed that idea, ha!

My SIL is allergic to cats and yet they have two again. She does take allergy shots, but then she's allergic to many other factors in daily life, too. I heard you can build a resistance to a cat that you have constant contact with, whether it's true, I don't know.

Robyn Carr and RaeAnne Thayne-- they are always good for a relaxing, comfort read. Enjoy the rest of your week.

  11. Glad to hear you figured out a remedy. A cat in the house is always rewarding. Have a great week.

  12. I love the look of the new Robyn Carr book...and Bad Housekeeping is on my list.

Enjoy your camping...I love the idea of the RV.

I think I need to do some allergy tests, too, considering my recent bout with skin reactions that may or may not be from hair dye.

Have a great week, and here are MY WEEKLY UPDATES

  13. I finally just deleted all my unplayed podcasts because I'll never catch up... starting fresh seems liberating. What a good mom you are to go through all that so your son can have a cat!! Hope you're having a wonderful camping trip this weekend.

  14. Oh wow! What an intense allergy shot session; what a dedicated mum you are to go through that just so your son could have a cat.

  15. Oh goodness. That's quite the thing, though. I would have freaked since needles are NOT my thing. lol Hope the rest of the shots go well. And that camping was a blast :D

  17. What a wonderful thing to do so the Tornado can still have a cat. Have fun on your RVing adventure. I will be looking forward to your recap. Have a fabulous week. :)

  18. Good luck on the cat! Some cats bug me, but not as much as you. Like, Finn is not a very in your face cat, but if he was, he would bug me. Casey never bugged me and Chloe hasn't so far.

  19. I hope you enjoyed your camping trip. You are such a good mom to go through all of that so that your son can get a cat. I hope you enjoy all of your new books!

  20. I hope you are enjoying your camping trip! We're going in August, although I'm not really sure you can call it camping since we'll be staying in a cabin. :-) It's good to know that you will be able to work around your allergies so Tornado can have a cat. My cat allergies aren't too bad, fortunately, and I do pretty well around our own cats. Anyone else's is a different story, I'm afraid. I'm not sure why that is.

Have a great week, Katherine and enjoy your new books!

  21. Robyn Carr is all over the blogs and an author I've still to get to. Family stories draw me in too.

  22. Ooo... The treatment doesn't sound fun, but hopefully having a cat will make up for that. And camping! Yay!

    Happy reading this week!

  23. I loved BH90210, so I can't wait to look up Again With This! Sounds like good old nostalgic fun :)

  24. I love Robyn Carr! Her Virgin River series was really good. I'm starting her Sullivan's Crossing series (I think that's the name of it.) As soon as I finish A Stardance Summer by Emily March, I will dive into What We Find. It's ben awhile since I read one of her books.
